Grounded theory
Ed 714 Qualitative Research Methods in Education
Spring/Summer 2001
Grounded theory is an inductive approach in the extreme. Its use depends on the collection of information from multiple sources and multiple perspectives on a problem. The primary focus of grounded theory research should be on dynamic, interpersonal transactions that define a social context. These social processes are believed to shape human behavior. When participants in a study are asked to reflect on these processes and their resultant effect on behavior, the aim of the research becomes that of discovering the meaning of situated experience. As inductive theory, grounded theory makes no distinction between theory and design. In fact the theory is a guide to design. It also is an approach for evoking a theory about context from data, as opposed to imposing a pre ordinate theory upon evidence.
The approach uses many of the techniques of formal ethnographic research: for example, interviews, participant observation, and the collection and analysis of social texts. It differs from ethnography insofar as the approach examines problems that are framed in social settings that are far less extensive than entire cultures would be. Thus examinations of cultural meanings in academic departments, schools and classrooms, offices, corporations, local settings, and the like, are amenable to this approach.
The techniques of grounded theory differ from those of conventional social science research. A literature review is done. However, it is not used to find a theoretical model, ready made in the work of other researchers that will be used to make design choices. Rather the literature review is conducted continuously and simultaneously with the act of doing research. This permits a review of technical choices available to a researcher perhaps one will decide to rethink the direction f interview questions or seek out additional samples of respondents because the literature raises additional issues.

    Abstract : Grounded theory is a qualitative research approach that uses inductive analysis as a principal technique. Yet, researchers who embrace this approach often use sensitizing concepts to guide their analysis. In this article, the author examines the relationship between sensitizing concepts and grounded theory. Furthermore, he illustrates the application of sensitizing concepts in a study of community-based antipoverty projects in Jamaica. The article contains commentary about trustworthiness techniques, the coding process, and the constant comparative method of analysis, as well as a synopsis of study findings. Keywords: grounded theory, inductive analysis, naturalistic research, sensitizing concepts, themes, trustworthiness Thanks to the College of Health and Urban Affairs (School of Social Work) at Florida International University, Miami, USA, for financial assistance toward my participation in a qualitative methods workshop in August 2003. Emergence The Discovery of Grounded Theory This book was written at a time when researchers in sociology were questioning the assumptions of positivism . In many ways, this book can be read and understood as a response to positivistic approaches in sociology. In fact, one of the goals of this book was to provide a 'legitimate' approach for doing qualitative research. Glaser and Strasss articulate an empirical approach for developing theory. At the time, much of theory development was done a priori - before collecting and analyzing data. Glaser and Strauss were arguing for an alternative approach, one that involves developing theories in a way that is connected to the data collection and analysis process. Defined Common Methods used in Grounded Theory Participant Observation . This involves the researcher immersing him or herself in the daily lives and routines of those being studied. This often requires extensive work in the setting being studied. This is called fieldwork. Interviewing . Researchers using a Grounded Theory approach will learn about a culture or group by speaking with informants or members of the culture or group. Talking with informants is called interviewing. The types of interviews conducted by researchers using this approach vary in degree of formality (informal interview to semi-structured to structured interviews). Collection of Artifacts and Texts . Researchers using a grounded theory approach may also learn about a group or culture by collecting and studying artifacts (e.g. written protocols, charts, flowsheets, educational handouts) - materials used by members of the culture in their daily lives.

    Writings
    For Discovering Guidelines that Work If you want to develop creative guidelines with real substance, here is a way to get them. Grounded Theory procedure makes it possible to find out the underlying attributes that consumers actually respond to. You can project from how they react to existing materials to how they will respond to new ones, even before they are made. A revolutionary new technique . The traditional technique of the social sciences has been to build theories by testing pre-existing hypotheses that came from somewhere else. Grounded Theory development procedures use data in a new way: to stimulate, and then to shape, the inductive thought processes of the researcher. It is a systematic approach to hypothesis building and theory testing. And it has proven to be very powerful. History . In 1967, two academic sociologists, Barney Glaser & Anselm Strauss at UC-San Francisco put forth Grounded Theory Development as a systematic approach to generating new conceptualizations of what is going on in newly emerging areas of study. Their seminal work, "The Development of Grounded Theory" (1967), moved researchers past the hypothesis-testing uses of raw data into the hypothesis-generating potential of their observations. The approach has been steadily expanding its reach within academia - through sociology and social anthropology and, more recently into applied disciplines like educational research. Applications.

    Introduction
    Studying the context in which information systems development tools are meant to function requires an appropriate research methodology. The two studies illustrate the use of such a methodology. In these studies grounded theory, an ethnographic approach, is used to capture information needed to explicate the interactions between teams and information systems development tools, and organizations and information systems development tools. According to Glaser and Strauss (1967) theories are either deduced from logical assumptions or generated from observation. Grounded theory is a qualitative approach that generates theory from observation. It provides the structure often lacking in other qualitative approaches without sacrificing flexibility or rigor. The resulting theory is an explanation of categories, their properties, and the relationships among them. The results lead to an evolutionary body of knowledge that is grounded in data.

    The Studies
    This comparison illustrates ways in which grounded theory can be used to analyze and understand interview data. The first study assesses the use of a software engineering tool, dialog charts, by systems designers (Calloway, 1988). The second study investigates organizations that use Integrated Computer-Aided Software Engineering (ICASE) tools (Knapp, 1995). We discuss the similarities and differences in the methods of information generation, data collection, data analysis and reduction, and data synthesis.

    57. Glaser And Strauss: Developing Grounded Theory
    Glaser, Barney G Strauss, Anselm L., 1967. The Discovery of Grounded Theory Strategies for Qualitative Research, Chicago, Aldine Publishing Company
    http://faculty.babson.edu/krollag/org_site/craft_articles/glaser_strauss.html
    This book is about discovering theory from data, what Glaser and Strauss call grounded theory. The major strategy they use is a general method of comparative analysis. They argue that much of current research is primarily the verification of theory or the development of theory through logical deduction rather than from the experimental data itself.
    Grounded Theory
    In sociology they propose that the roles of theory is to:
    * to enable prediction and explanation of behavior
    * to be useful in theoretical advance
    * useable in practical applications
    * guide research on behavior.
    "Theory is sociology is a strategy for handling data in research, providing modes of conceptualization for describing and explaining" (p. 3).
    Basing theory on experimental data ties it to the data and makes it irrefutable. It reduces the opportunitistic use of available theories or the force fit of popular theories to the data. It avoids "exampling", the often easy task of finding examples to fit any theory.
    Glaser and Strauss take the position that the adequacy of a theory can't be divorced from the process of creating it (p. 5). The purpose of their book is to describe a method and some tips on how to build theory out of qualitative data.
