In this approach, researchers are responsible for developing other theories that emerge from observing a group. The theories are "grounded" in the group's observable experiences, but researchers add their own insight into why those experiences exist. In essence, grounded theory attempts to "reach a theory or conceptual understanding through step wise, inductive process" (Banning 1995). Qualitative Approaches
A qualitative "approach" is a general way of thinking about conducting qualitative research. It describes, either explicitly or implicitly, the purpose of the qualitative research, the role of the researcher(s), the stages of research, and the method of data analysis. here, four of the major qualitative approaches are introduced.
    Ethnography
The ethnographic approach to qualitative research comes largely from the field of anthropology. The emphasis in ethnography is on studying an entire culture. Originally, the idea of a culture was tied to the notion of ethnicity and geographic location (e.g., the culture of the Trobriand Islands), but it has been broadened to include virtually any group or organization. That is, we can study the "culture" of a business or defined group (e.g., a Rotary club). Ethnography is an extremely broad area with a great variety of practitioners and methods. However, the most common ethnographic approach is participant observation as a part of field research. The ethnographer becomes immersed in the culture as an active participant and records extensive field notes. As in grounded theory, there is no preset limiting of what will be observed and no real ending point in an ethnographic study.

Empirical studies consist of knowledge about the experienced world. This knowledge is generated through scientific methods and is usually organized into laws and theories that help describe, predict, and explain phenomena. This theory seeks to understand and explain human behavior which is essential to health care professionals to plan and implement a plan of care for clients Rules and Assumptions Grounded theory is based on symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism is based on the belief that people react to things on the basis of the meaning that things have to them. This meaning comes from the social interactions one has with others and is redeveloped throughout lived experiences

In HCI empirical research on August 30, 2010 at 8:49 pm Right, this has been coming for a while. So lets clear some some misconceptions. 2) If you interview someone you almost certainly have to have expressable questions. Just saying. So, Grounded Theory is a balance between exploring the data, and being open to developing new lines of questioning based on previously ill-understood, not-understood phenomena captured in the data. Now, I also think Grounded Theory is tempting because it comes with a series of steps. Open coding, axial coding, and selective coding suggest that if appropriately followed a Grounded Theory will result. Many other intepretivist approaches do not come with those steps. Instead the reader has to pay close attention to the theory that drives the empirical work. One has to understand why, say, accounts matter to the ethnomethodological agenda, and then understand that the study of phenomena is likely drive in part to further illuminate the concept with respect to the particular setting. And if you want to understand the theory of Grounded Theory, try reading

    Coding issues in grounded theory
    Alireza Moghaddam
    The University of Western Ontario
This paper discusses grounded theory as one of the qualitative research designs. It describes how grounded theory generates from data. Three phases of grounded theory - open coding, axial coding, and selective coding - are discussed, along with some of the issues which are the source of debate among grounded theorists, especially between its founders, Glaser and Strauss.
    Introduction
Grounded theory refers to theory developed inductively from data. It takes a case and results in a theory which fits one dataset. It explains the collected data through a middle-range theoretical framework (Charmaz, 2000). The grounded theory approach consists of a set of steps and processes which are the building blocks of a quality grounded theory. Grounded theory uses categories drawn from respondents and focuses on making implicit belief systems explicit.
    Grounded theory
Grounded theory was introduced by Glaser and Strauss in their 1967 book, The Discovery of Grounded Theory. The book was based on a justification for using qualitative research to build up theoretical analysis. As Goulding (1999) mentions, it was written in part as an objection against what the authors viewed as a rather passive acceptance that all the 'great' theories had been discovered and that the role of research lay in testing these theories through quantitative 'scientific' procedures.

Abstract Identity and cultural encounter - the case of Syrian Orthodox women. A discussion on Grounded theory.
The dissertation is a qualitative study of Suryoyo (Syrian Othodox) women living in Sweden. The main theme is the relation between the integration process in Swedish society and the women's cultural and religious background and ethnic identity. The core question posed is whether the women can be looked upon as "genuinely integrated" as participant subjects and citizens in the host society. A variety of qualitative methods are used: participation, observation, open interviews and narratives. Secondary analyses of available empirical material is also used. The narrative analysis is based on seven short life stories. Two separate cases are also presented: one - on the individual level - about a handicapped Suryoyo woman and the encounter with the immigrant receiving society and one - on the meso level - about the Suryoyo women1s effort to organize as a women1s committee in the Suryoyo Association. An overview of the religious and political history is a context presented which is of importance for understanding the women1s situation in the Swedish exile. The conclusion is that the women are partly "pseudo intergrated" in a genuine political , structural and societal meaning. The obstacles to intergration are gender related but reasons are also to be found in the religious/cultural background, weakness in language and education and general segregating mechanisms in Swedish society. All these factors are mutually connected and make a complex background to the women1s integration process. At the same time the women have a platform in their strong ethnic identity and experiences as active subjects mirrored in their life stories. This platform is a tool of importance in the mobilizing process.

    Introduction.
The primary concern of this study is the impact of access to electronic information resources on learning opportunities for young people. "Learning with hypermedia is essentially an information usage activity," ( Yang, 1997 : 71) which places this research firmly within the field of LIS information use studies. The focus of this study will be the individual youth and his/her entire electronic information environment, both school-related and personal. ( ). Initial inquiries carried out in the early stages of the research confirmed that, not only is access to electronic and digital information sources fragmented throughout separate schools, public libraries, and homes, there is also a lack of consistency of access within individual institutions ( Great Britain..., 1998

A Comment on the Application of Grounded Theory to Accounting Research
Philip H. Siegel, Fiesta Mart Chair of Accounting
University of Houston-Downtown Recently accounting researchers have begun to explore and apply grounded research to behaviorally based problems (c.f. Blank et al. 1991; Siegel et al. 1994). Grounded theory is a qualitative approach which can be used to analyze social processes that are present within human interactions. Application of the theory results in explanations of important social processes or structures that are derived (grounded) in the empirical data. The grounded theory approach is based on the idea that a group or groups share specific social psychological problems that are not necessarily articulated (Glaser and Strauss 1967). Grounded theory is a form of field-studies that systematically applies procedural steps to develop an exploration about a particular phenomenon. As Strauss and Corbin (1990) explain:
A grounded theory, is one that is inductively derived from the study of the phenomenon it represents. That is, it is discovered, developed, and provisionally verified through systematic data. collection and analysis of data pertaining to that phenomenon. Therefore, data collection, analysis, and theory stand in reciprocal relationship with each other. One does not begin with a theory, then prove it. Rather, one begins with an area of study and what is relevant to that area is allowed to emerge.
The objective of grounded theory is the discovery of theoretically comprehensive explanations about particular phenomenon. The techniques and analytical procedures enable investigators to develop a substantive theory that is significant, theory-observation compatible, generalizable, reproducible and rigorous.

    Introduction
This paper summarizes the principal findings of research that sought to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental scanning process. The methodology used was of major importance in obtaining data that are grounded largely in the personal experience of managers, but also in documentary evidence and in direct observation by the researcher. The purpose of the study was to investigate how managers in the Portuguese chemical industry scan their environment for information, what are the contextual factors that affect this activity, and also how managers' perceptions of environmental change affect the strategic change they implement.
    Methodology and research design
    Methodology
In the context of this research, the case study was considered appropriate for providing a holistic approach to the study of environmental scanning in industrial organizations operating in the chemical industry. In creating the case study, several types of data and information were collected, including general data about the industry and specific information about the companies that agreed to participate.
