Groundwater
What is Groundwater?
Groundwater is an often misunderstood resource that provides one quarter of New Yorkers, and half of all Americans, with their drinking water. It can be found virtually everywhere on the planet at depths ranging from very shallow to very deep.
Figure 1. Where does groundwater come from? Where does it come from? When rain falls to the ground, some of it is carried off as runoff down-slope into streams, lakes, and other bodies of water or into sewers. But some of it travels downward into the ground and through the underlying sediment, the upper part of which is not completely filled with water (the "unsaturated zone"). Continuing its downward route in the unsaturated zone it moves through the interconnected openings of sand, gravel, silt, and clay or openings in rock until it reaches the "saturated zone" where it becomes groundwater. As Ralph Heath, a respected USGS geologist, lyrically wrote in 1964:

Underground Water Groundwater and the Hydrologic Cycle Groundwater is water lying below the water table (an imaginary surface marking the depth below which all pore spaces are filled with water). The subsurface is one reservoir for water in the hydrologic cycle. Most groundwater comes from infiltrated precipitation. Groundwater eventually returns to the surface by flowing into lakes, streams or the ocean. Most of the Earth's unfrozen, fresh water supply lies below the surfase. More than 65% of the groundwater used in the US goes for irrigation, with industry the second largest user, and domestic consumption third. There are potential problems related to its distribution and use:
  • Overuse may severely depleted groundwater supplies. Pollution may make some groundwater sources unusable. Ground subsidence and salt water contamination may result from excessive groundwater withdrawal.
  • The Water Table As water infiltrates into the ground, it passes through several zones:
  • Zone of Aeration is where pore spaces in soil and rock contain air and water, and water is prevented from moving deeper by water tension (

Its importance to humans is not new. Groundwater rights have always been important in North America, and many legal battles have been fought over them. Groundwater also played a crucial role in the development of the U.S. railway system during the nineteenth century when railroads needed a reliable source of water for their steam locomotives. Much of the water used by the locomotives came from groundwater tapped by wells. Today, the study of groundwater and its movement has become increasingly important as the demand for fresh water by agricultural, industrial, and domestic users has reached an all-time high. More than 65% of the groundwater used in the United States each year goes for irrigation, with industrial use second, followed by domestic needs. These demands have severely depleted the groundwater supply in many areas and led to such problems as ground subsidence and saltwater contamination. In other areas, pollution from landfills, toxic waste, and agriculture has rendered the groundwater supply unsafe. Groundwater And The Hydrologic Cycle Groundwater is one reservoir of the hydrologic cycle. The major source of groundwater is precipitation that infiltrates the ground and moves through the soil and pore spaces of rocks. Other sources include water infiltrating from lakes and streams, recharge ponds, and wastewater treatment systems. As the groundwater moves through soil, sediment, and rocks, many of its impurities, such as disease-causing microorganisms, are filtered out. Not all soils and rocks are good filters, however, and some serious pollutants are not removed. Groundwater eventually returns to the surface reservoir when it enters lakes, streams, or the ocean.

Groundwater is water that exists in the pore spaces and fractures in rock and sediment beneath the Earth's surface. It originates as rainfall or snow, and then moves through the soil into the groundwater system, where it eventually makes its way back to surface streams, lakes, or oceans.
  • Groundwater makes up about 1% of the water on Earth (most water is in oceans).
But, groundwater makes up about 35 times the amount of water in lakes and streams.
Groundwater occurs everywhere beneath the Earth's surface, but is usually restricted to depths less that about 750 meters.
The volume of groundwater is a equivalent to a 55 meter thick layer spread out over the entire surface of the Earth.
