Health physics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Health physics is a field of science concerned with radiation physics and radiation biology with the goal of informing the safe use of ionizing radiation. Health physicists principally work at facilities where radionuclides or ionizing radiation are used or produced such as medical institutions, government laboratories, nuclear power plants, regulatory agencies and manufacturers. There are many sub-specialities in the field of health physics, including The field of medical physics is similar to that of health physics since practitioners rely on the same fundamental science (i.e., radiation physics, biology, etc). Health physicists, however, focus on the evaluation and protection of human health from radiation, whereas medical physicists use radiation and other physics-based technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

    Protecting Workers and the Environment
Health Physics is devoted to managing the beneficial use of ionizing radiation while protecting workers and the public from potential hazards.  This program will equip a person to enter a job in Health Physics or Radiation Control at the technician level.
Qualified Radiation Safety Technicians are needed in many work places that use radiation.  This includes health care, nuclear energy, uranium processing and enrichment, university research facilities, government facilities, and other industries.  These technicians play a vital role in the health and safety of the workforce, patients, the public, and the environment and in compliance with both state and federal regulations on the use of radioactive materials and radiation emitting devices.
The Health Physics program has been structured to allow completion in an accelerated format.  The courses are all available as online courses.  Any of the courses that have a laboratory component will require limited on-campus visits that can be arranged at the convenience of the class.  For students that live out of the immediate area, arrangements can be made for the laboratory exercises to be completed at the student’s work place or at a location that is willing to allow use of their instrumentation.

UT/ORAU Health Physics Certificate
The use of radiation in industry, medicine, and education has created a need for persons trained in the principles of radiation safety and health physics. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) in introducing the UT/ORAU Health Physics Certificate. Through its Professional Training Programs (PTP), ORAU has offered one-week to five-week short courses in the radiological sciences since 1948. What is Health Physics? What do health physicists do? Health physicists work in a variety of disciplines, including research, industry, education, environmental protection, and enforcement of government regulations. Although the health physicist usually concentrates in one of these disciplines, a professional health physicist typically performs duties in several areas. Careers in Health Physics Learn about careers in this high-paying field. The UT/ORAU Health Physics Certificate requires a minimum of 300 hours of radiological sciences taught by PTP, including the five-week Applied Health Physics course, three elective courses, and a capstone paper.
