FSU HEP Group October 2009 Particle physicists study matter at the very smallest scale, exploring the structure and interactions of the most fundamental particles which make up everything in the universe, from stars to starfish. Particle physics has made incredible progress since the discovery of the electron over one hundred years ago.

Albert Einstein said: Through the release of atomic energy, our generation has brought into the world the most revolutionary force since prehistoric man's discovery of fire. This basic force of the universe cannot be fitted into the outmoded concept of narrow nationalisms. Niels Bohr said: Those who are not shocked when they first come across quantum mechanics cannot possibly have understood it.

High Energy Physics Tim Bolton K-State’s HEP group has been as busy as ever over the last twelve months. On the research front, our D-Zero experiment at Fermilab has now collected half an inverse femtobarn of proton-antiproton collision data at Fermilab’s Tevatron accelerator, meaning that we could now in principle observe processes with cross sections as small as 10 cm Eckhard von Toerne and post-doc Dima Onoprienko performed a series of studies of charged particle tracking at a future electron-positron linear collider that have won KSU widespread admiration in this physics community. Eckhard has also led, with post-doc Bill Kahl, Kansas State’s contributions to the future CMS experiment that will operate at the new 14 TeV proton-proton collider called the LHC, now under construction at CERN in Geneva Switzerland. As usual, K-State specializes in precision tracking with silicon trackers, in this case, the forward pixel detector system (FPIX). HEP and EDL personnel will test important components of the FPIX in our high bay clean room facility.

High Energy Physics
02 Nov 2010 High energy particle physics is about looking at extremely small sizes, or equivalently at extremely high energies. It teaches us about the underlying nature of the physical universe, and the forces and laws that govern its development, from the first moments of the big bang, through to the present day, and far into the future.

High Energy Physics
The High Energy Physics group consists of five faculty experimentalists (one emeritus), and three faculty theoreticians, several postdoctoral research fellows, and a number of graduate students. The primary focus of the CLEO experiment is to measure properties of the b-quark and its interactions with other fundamental particles of the standard model. Both the production and subsequent decay of particles containing a b-quark are studied, providing deeper understanding of the strong interaction, the weak interaction, and the quantum interference between these two forces. A search for magnetic monopoles is currently being conducted by a small group of collaborators here at OU. Monopoles created in high energy collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron could be trapped in the detector material surrounding the collision point. We have obtained some of that material and are looking for monopoles using a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) detector. e first run has yielded monopole mass limits on the order of 300 GeV, some three times higher than previous limits for direct searches of accelerator produced monopoles. Besides the direct physics research, we are also involved in state-of-the-art detector development for D0, CLEO and the ATLAS experiment. This program, which uses our own facilities at OU, focuses on advanced silicon micro-strip detectors. The excellent position resolution of silicon allows identification of short lived particles and allows us to measure their properties.

Mission Statement
The Institute for High Energy Physics and Astrophysics (IHEPA) was formed in 2000. IHEPA serves to facilitate collaborations of UF researchers in large scale projects in the interdisciplinary area of Particle Physics and Astrophysics. Many of the Institute's participants are involved in national and international experiments Researchers from UF have taken active roles in the primary activities of these experimental efforts. Their activities include designing and constructing new apparatus in collaboration with outside groups, developing major software components, carrying out data analysis and simulation, and providing large scale computing support for data reduction and simulation, a task for which we are particularly well equipped.

HIGH ENERGY EXPERIMENT
CMS: The CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the highest energy proton collider in the world, starts its operation in 2009. The experiment is situated at the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. In past years, the UF group has led the design and construction of the muon detector and sophisticated electronics for real time event selection. We play the key role in the task of commissioning and operation of the CMS Detector. We lead many physics analyses aiming at discovering the elusive Higgs boson, which is the key to understanding how elementary particles acquire masses, Supersymmetry, which postulates that all particles come in both boson and fermion varieties and which is a prerequisite for unifying gravity with other forces, and a number of other analyses looking for evidence for new particles and force mediators.
CDF: The CDF experiment takes place at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at the Fermilab near Chicago. Until the LHC turn-on, the Tevatron is the largest collider in the world. A broad program of high energy physics measurements is carried out by the experiment, including the discovery and studies of the top-quark, measurements elucidating the intricate phenomenon of quark mixing, searches for Higgs boson, supersymmetric particles, and other new phenomena. The UF group built and operates the CDF luminosity monitor based on a novel technology, has played leading roles in exciting physics analyses and has had many important leadership positions in the experiment, including the top management position in the experiment.
