(click to view) Welcome to the Daguerreian Society! Whether you're here just to browse around and look at images or whether you're already passionate about early photography, the members of The Daguerreian Society welcome you. The Daguerreian Society brings together people from all over the world who are united by a common interest in the history of photography. Our members include students and teachers... museum curators and scientists... collectors and dealers... historians, photographers and artists. We formed in 1988 as a group "dedicated to the history, science, and art of the daguerreotype." Daguerreotypes the glittering, mirror-like images made by the world's first practical system of photography are only one part of what brings us together. Over the years, we've learned to appreciate the skills and knowledge of our fellow members, and their dedication to increasing the world's understanding of early photography and its role in history. Our group publishes an Annual that's filled with great images discovered by our members and carefully-researched articles written by members. We also produce an illustrated

This website provides access to a digital library of texts by Dutch scholars and scientists from a variety of academic disciplines, dating from the earliest times till about 1920. The texts have been selected for their relevance for the study of the history of science and scholarship in the Netherlands by an editorial committee. The Academy has made this field the focus of its publishing programme and aims to bring together a large corpus of texts in digital format for the research community.
The works presented on this site have been digitized from the collections of libraries and archives. The materials are arranged by author and accompanied by brief introductions on the author and/or the work. Some of these introductions have been especially written for this site by experts in the field, others have been taken from existing publications. Apart from these introductory materials no further annotations, comments or translations have been added. When available English versions of texts and biographies have been used, but the library also contains texts in Latin, German, French and Dutch.

To all who knew him and loved him, he left us all long before his time and long before any of us could believe it. His devotion to the mangosteen fruit and the awareness of its charms meant our paths would cross years ago. I will always be grateful for his patience and earnestness and willingness to provide me with any help he could to help me bring the mangosteen out into the light of day. I think of him every time I am on my farm and see many of the older trees that were from "the mangosteen man." In this way, he is still with us and will be for many years to come. The mangosteen Freshly picked mangosteen, "the queen of tropical fruit." I moved to Corvallis from California's San Joaquin Valley and in the process traded two seasons for four. I was beside myself in autumn and cannot wait to see this thing called spring. Fresno was very good to me, however. I completed a bachelor's and a master's degree in biology at California State University, Fresno. My undergraduate interests centered on ecology and evolution, while my graduate project dealt with molecular genetics and plant pathology. I spent summers in the field, at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and at the University of Tennessee. Mulling over my choices at the end of my first masters, I visited Oregon State and was immediately drawn to the History of Science program. My experience thus far has left me pleased that I took the tangent that led me here. The warmth, enthusiasm, and commitment of my mentors and colleagues are telling of the pride and fulfillment they find in their work. My interests in the history of science gravitate toward evolutionary biology. Subsidiary and related interests include: developmental biology, evolutionary theory, animal science (i.e. artificial selection), plant pathology, and famine study. I travel whenever the opportunity arises. I also enjoy a good game of basketball, however much it suffers once I join in. I am obsessed with old cars and older architecture. As time and money allow, I also collect and restore antique furniture and obsolete gadgets.

The uncertain boundaries between light and matter
Optical dispersion is the phenomenon we observe in rainbows and in the spectra produced by prisms. Although easy to observe, optical dispersion has been a very difficult phenomenon to model ever since Newton’s first attempts, being at the border between theories of light and matter. At the turn of the 20th century, the various interpretations of optical dispersion played a central role in two very different revolutions: the emergence of microphysics around 1900, and the birth of quantum mechanics in 1925. The purpose of this research, as part of the project on “History and Foundations of Quantum Physics” of Department I, is to reveal the features that made optical dispersion a persisting problem during this period, and thus to clarify how quantum physics developed from classical physics. History of Science Program
Graduate Info Packet The History of Science Graduate Program in the Department of History at Oregon State University provides professional training in the interdisciplinary subject of history of science. The program connects the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences by studying and interpreting the development of the sciences within particular historical settings and analyzing the changing roles of the sciences within modern cultures. Emphasis in the program is on scientific traditions since the sixteenth century in Europe and North America, in the physical, earth, biological, medical, and social sciences, as well as on environmental history and the history of the environmental sciences. Some faculty in the History of Science Graduate Program have appointments in both history and science departments, enhancing educational and research opportunities for graduate students. The Horning Endowment for the Humanities sponsors lectures, conferences, and colloquia that strengthen a deeper understanding of the humanities among science students and bridge the humanities and the sciences. Horning activities often focus on the history of science.

History of Science Dates are given only so you can see the chronology. You will not be required to memorize specific dates, but you will be expected to have some idea of the chronology involved because what is important here is the context in which discoveries and/or speculations were made. What people see and how they interpret it is colored by their point of view. This has also led to and fueled much controversy in certain areas of science. Thus, the goal here is to understand the evolution of our scientific ( scientia = to know) thought and knowledge: to be aware of the social, psychological, etc. factors influencing scientific interpretation of the data or how we think about things. Because our current knowledge of biology is so broad, we cannot cover the history of it all, but rather, need to focus on one area to illustrate how our thought processes change. For a topic, then, well use Where did we come from? Keep in mind that, in our present-day society, we have created a dichotomy between science which is supposed to be totally objective and seeks to discover how something testable happened via the scientific method and experimentation versus religion which usually is more subjective and seeks to explain why something happened. Both are needed together to more fully understand the universe around us.
