(Next issue: November 12, 2010) In the late 1980s, Alex Zaffaroni, J. Leighton Read, and Peter Schultz founded a company called Affymax, with the goal of developing new technologies to create, through combinatorial methods, a large number of peptide targets that could be simultaneously evaluated. They soon recruited Lubert Stryer, Michael Pirrung, and Stephen Foder to assist them with this endeavor. Their success was documented in a Science paper in 1991, in which they used photolithography, a technology being used in the development of microchips, to build peptides one amino acid at a time on a glass slide (Science

Human Genetics
The Department of Pediatrics and Human Development has a three pronged Human Genetics Program consisting of three diagnostic clinical laboratories, an inpatient and outpatient clinical consultative program and solid basic science research. The laboratory components of the MSU Human Genetics Program, a division of the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development, are located in the Life Sciences Building on the campus of Michigan State University. Outpatient evaluations occur at the Sparrow Professional Building; inpatient consultations are performed at Sparrow Hospital. The clinical program consists of three service laboratories: DNA Diagnostics, Cytogenetics and Prenatal Screening as well as a comprehensive clinical program staffed by genetics counselors and clinical geneticists. The MSU Human Genetics Program has provided services in the local community, throughout the state of Michigan and across the nation since 1969. The division has built its reputation on providing the highest level of customer service and patient care. We offer expert interpretation of test results, immediate telephone reporting of abnormal test results and consultative services with board certified genetic counselors, clinicians and laboratory directors. The basic scientists consist of PhD geneticists who conduct a variety of research ranging from adult stem cell research to the genetics of hearing loss.

Overview
The Division and Program for Human Genetics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has four major areas: clinical, laboratory services, teaching, and research. The divisional goals are directed to the immediate and long term provision of state-of-the-art medical care and treatment for individuals and families afflicted with heritable disorders. Clinically, the Division provides regional and national referral for comprehensive diagnostic, counseling, treatment and management services through multidisciplinary teams. These include: Board Certified Medical geneticists, clinical cytogeneticists, clinical molecular geneticists, clinical metabolic/biochemical disease specialists, genetic counselors, genetic nurse specialists as well as other medical care professionals. Specialty clinics within the Division and Program for Human Genetics include: Pediatric and Adult Neurofibromatosis, Heredity Connective Tissue, Metabolic Diseases, Velo-Pharyngeal Insufficiency, Prenatal, Craniofacial (Multidisciplinary, and Infants and Toddlers), Tuberous Sclerosis (with Neurology), Hereditary Cancer, and Lysosomal Storage Diseases. Training within the Division and Program for Human Genetics focuses on MD and PhD post-doctoral fellows, and genetic counselors (MS program) attaining Certification by the American Boards of Medical Genetics and Genetic Counseling, respectively. The division houses one of about 23 RRC approved sites for residency training in Medical Genetics. The Division and Program for Human Genetics hosts a unique program for nurses directed to increasing genetic awareness and content in RN preparatory programs. Pre-doctoral and post-doctoral PhD training focuses on developing physician/scientists with independent research careers.

Harvard Committee of Human Genetics mission statement "Integration of human geneticists across the Harvard community" We strive to cohere the human genetics community, which includes faculty from: Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, their affiliated hospitals (Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women's, Children's, Beth Israel Deaconess, Dana Farber, Joslin, etc.), the Broad Institute, the HPCGG, and Departments on the main campus of Harvard. Although human genetics faculty are physically scattered across the greater Harvard domain, and specific interests vary widely from clinical to technical to sociological, there is a shared underlying interest in understanding the genotypic variation that effects or describes the human condition. Specifically, the Committee on human genetics will create an environment to allow the:
