Human Genetics
The Human Genetics programme focuses on the genetic basis of disease and other important biological traits. A better understanding of the nature and origins of human genetic variation is allowing us to probe ever more deeply into the genetic basis of both common and rare disease susceptibility. This work is pointing the way to possible new treatments and novel diagnostic approaches, as well as shedding light on human evolution.

Abstract
This paper sets out to defend human genetic engineering with a new bioethical approach, post-humanism, combined with a radical democratic political framework. Arguments for the restriction of human genetic engineering, and specifically germ-line enhancement, are reviewed. Arguments are divided into those which are fundamental matters of faith, or "bio-Luddite" arguments, and those which can be addressed through public policy, or "gene-angst" arguments. The four bio-Luddite concerns addressed are: Medicine Makes People Sick; There are Sacred Limits of the Natural Order; Technologies Always Serve Ruling Interests; The Genome is Too Complicated to Engineer. I argue that these are matters of faith that one either accepts or rejects, and that I reject.

The Human Genetics Unit
The Human Genetics Unit is a collaboration between the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside. The Unit brings together disciplines from research, diagnostic and service based laboratories providing an environment that aims to augment the activities of its constituent groups.
Clinical Genetics
Specialist clinics for the diagnosis of hereditary conditions, to advise affected families and to help coordinate their management are provided by two Consultant Clinical Geneticists and three Genetic Councellors based at Ninewells Hospital. Clinics are held in several locations across Tayside (Ninewells Hospital, Perth Royal Infirmary, Arbroath Infirmary and Whitehills Forfar). Clinics include general genetics clinics and specialist, familial cancer clinics, antenatal genetics clinics, neurogenetics clinics (adult and paediatric), dermatogenetic clinics and vascular genetics clinics. We can also advise clinical colleagues about diagnosis and management of hereditary conditions and interpretation of the results of genetic investigations.
Cytogenetics
The department delivers a range of specialised diagnostic cytogenetic services to Tayside and North Fife, together with the research and development necessary for new clinical services of direct patient benefit. Close liaison with Clinical and Molecular Genetics disciplines helps to provide an integrated Human Genetics Service

POPULATION GENETICS
INTRODUCTION
Population genetics is also the most widely misused area of human genetics, sometimes bordering on "vigilante genetics," a term coined by Newton Morton. Persons have mistakenly applied population genetics to "prove" race superiority for intelligence and aptitudes, and have misused it in eugenics. As an educated and, I hope, a respected member of your community you must be alert to "vigilante genetics." Population genetics is concerned with gene and genotype frequencies, the factors that tend to keep them constant, and the factors that tend to change them in populations. It is largely concerned with the study of polymorphisms. It directly impacts counseling, forensic medicine, and genetic screening.
GENE AND GENOTYPE FREQUENCIES
CODOMINANT ALLELES
Consider a population of 1000 individuals all typed for the simplest test at the MN blood group locus. At its most simplistic form this locus can be reduced to a codominant system with two alleles M and N. (In reality it is considerably more complex than this but this simple form will suffice for our examples.) Every individual in the population will be either M (having two M alleles), MN (heterozygous), or N (having two N alleles). Suppose the blood typing results were as follows: 300 M individuals, 600MN individuals, and 100 N individuals. You probably want to ask, "What is the gene frequency of the M allele in the above population of 1000 individuals?" I'm glad you're interested!
