94. Hurricane Katrina Photos, Videos And Other Information: Aftermath Of Katrina On
A photo presentation of Hurricane Katrina s catastrophic effects on the coastal towns of south Mississippi.
http://www.photosfromkatrina.com/
On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina decimated every mile of Mississippi's inland coastline. Hundreds were killed, tens of thousands were left homeless and more than one million were affected by the storm in Mississippi. The above photo is typical up and down the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It shows the complete destruction of a neighborhood in Biloxi, Mississippi. While the above photo is typical of the destruction along the Mississippi Coast, there was no photography that could accurately depict how bad the damages were when seen first hand.
Hurricane Katrina and the stunning lack of journalistic integrity: "... to national media , New Orleans is THE story - to the extent that if the Mississippi Coast is mentioned at all it is often in an add-on paragraph that mentions "and the Gulf Coast" or "and Mississippi and Alabama..." " So, why does that matter? It matters first as it relates to journalism's obligations to cover human beings whose conditions are as dire as those that exist here..." New Orleans Levees System Petition
Our Mission: Secure the passage of a New Orleans Levees Bill in Congress The ultimate goal of the Save Big Easy Organization is to aid in the recovery of the great city of New Orleans. Among the plethora of challenges currently facing the city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the most pressing is rebuilding New Orleans levees. Without a much stronger level of protection, settlement and investment in New Orleans will severely dissipate. Our mission involves three goals: 1) To secure the passage of a bill in Congress that will authorize and finance the construction of a comprehensive, Category 5 hurricane and flood protection system for New Orleans. By comprehensive, we mean stronger levees, restored wetlands, improved storm surge barriers, and other vital measures to protect the city. 2) Furthermore, We envision a bill that provides $20 billion dollars to a New Orleans Levee Commission, headed by a Levee Czar, which will have the power to rise above petty political squabbles in order to upgrade the levees in the most competent, efficient manner possible. 3) Finally, we seek the creation of an independent oversight board that will report to the federal government and will ensure that funds are spent appropriately.
