Hydrology is the science of water occurrence, movement and transport. Hydrogeology is the part of hydrology that deals with the occurrence, movement and quality of water beneath the Earth's surface. Because hydrogeology deals with water in a complex subsurface environment, it is a complex science. On the other hand, much of its basic terminology and principles can be understood readily by non-hydrogeologists. This section presents basic terms and principles of hydrogeology. The first section introduces many key terms and concepts in definition form. Subsequent definitions include graphics to aid in explanation. The following sections introduce principles of a ground water movement, using these terms. Graphics are included to further define terms and illustrate concepts.

Hydrogeology Inc. specializes in hydrogeologic studies, with an emphasis on, but not limited to, karst geology. Our company has over sixty years of research and consulting experience in these areas and have conducted and presented research both nationally and internationally.
Primary Services
Karst
Karst is a landform that consists of a combination of high rock solubility and well-developed secondary permeability. The dissolution of bedrock results in surface features, such as sinkholes, and subsurface features, like caves. Groundwater flow is usually manifested by internal drainage along enlarged passageways (caves and conduits) in the subsurface rock. Karst terrains are typically limestone but also include dolomite and evaporites. Karst terrains present unique problems in environmental studies. Hydrogeology Inc. provides expertise in karst field, GIS, and laboratory analysis. This includes karst feature mapping, using Hydrogeology Inc.'s Karst Mapper GIS application, dye tracing tests, drainage area determination, and geochemical analysis.
Dye Tracing
Dye tracing is an extremely useful tool in determining groundwater flowpaths. Hydrogeology Inc. is a full service dye tracing firm.

Ground water is the largest and most readily available source of potable water in Florida. Hydrogeology is the study of ground water with emphasis given to its chemistry, modes of movement, and relation to the geologic environment. Hydrogeology integrates geology, hydrology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and engineering to understand the occurrence and movement of water in the complex subsurface environment. Water-bearing sedimentary rocks in Florida can generally be divided into two types: siliciclastics (sands, silts, clays) or carbonates (limestone and dolostone). All of these rocks, no matter how "hard" or solid they appear, contain some voids or pores, which may contain water. Two properties that are common to all these rocks, and which control the movement of their ground water, are porosity and permeability. Porosity and permeability are intimately related. Porosity refers to the pores themselves, while permeability is a measure of a rock's ability to allow fluids to move through its pores. For a rock to be permeable, its pores must be interconnected so that water can move freely.

Hydrogeology Masters Program
The Master of Science in Hydrogeology program is designed to equip students with the tools needed for a successful career in hydrogeology, whether in the private sector, government, or academia. Our graduate program is focused, offering only a masters degree and only in the field of hydrogeology. We offer a core curriculum of required courses that allow our graduates to claim the title of "hydrogeologist". The Department operates its own well field close to campus which serves as a focus of both teaching and research activities. We have a broad view of what hydrogeology means, particularly with respect to research. Students also have the opportunity to explore interests within almost any aspect of the hydrologic cycle through elective courses and thesis research. We also offer exposure to other aspects of geology, geography, and hydrogeology through the department's weekly seminar . Recent speakers have included the National Groundwater Association Darcy Lecturers Richelle Allen-King, Allen Shapiro, and Kip Solomon.

Hydrology at OSU
At Oregon State we teach and do research on physical and chemical processes in groundwater and groundwater interactions with geologic processes. We have an active research group that works on pore-scale processes such as two-phase flow and diffusion, groundwater-surface water interactions, and modeling of groundwater flow and solute transport. The hydrogeology group collaborates in teaching and research with hydrologists in Civil, Bioresources and Forest Engineering and Soil Science. Most alumni from the group work in environmental consulting and government agencies. Dorthe Wildenschild , our newest professor in hydrogeology, and her students are interested in the hydrologic, thermal, and geophysical characterization of porous media, in pore-cale processes and modelling, contaminated groundwater characterization and remediation - for instance, using electro-osmosis. Her newest project involves the use of X-ray micro-tomography and pore-scale modeling to evaluate pore-scale processes in porous media in the presence of two phase flow.
