Hydrology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Water covers 70% of the Earth's surface. Hydrology is the study of the movement, distribution, and quality of water throughout the Earth, including the hydrologic cycle water resources and environmental watershed sustainability. A practitioner of hydrology is a hydrologist, working within the fields of either earth or environmental science physical geography geology or civil and environmental engineering Domains of hydrology include hydrometeorology surface hydrology hydrogeology drainage basin management and water chemistry , where water plays the central role. Oceanography and meteorology are not included because water is only one of many important aspects. Hydrological research can inform environmental engineering policy and planning The term hydrology is from Greek: hydōr , "water"; and logos , "study".

edit History of hydrology
Hydrology has been a subject of investigation and engineering for millennia. For example, about 4000 B.C. the Nile was dammed to improve agricultural productivity of previously barren lands. Mesopotamian towns were protected from flooding with high earthen walls.

Skip directly to: Navigation for this section Main page content Hydrology In 1962, irrigation program faculty with engineering degrees received split appointments in either the Department of Civil Engineering or the Department of Agricultural Engineering in the newly established College of Engineering. In 1965, the department was renamed the Department of Water Science and Engineering to reflect its broadening scope. In 1990 a campus-wide graduate program in Hydrologic Sciences was approved. The core curriculum includes courses that cut across disciplines and form the basis for specialization in areas such as ground-water contaminant transport, regional evaporation, hydrobiology and hydrogeochemistry. In addition to these areas, the current program also emphasizes teaching and research in watershed hydrology, water management, and irrigation and drainage. Hydrology is the study of water in natural systems including stream flow, flooding, sediment transport, groundwater supply and quality, contaminant transport, atmospheric processes, and biological interactions. The Hydrology degree at the University of Mississippi is offered at the graduate level only, and is supported by multiple departments within the School of Engineering. Students accepted into the Hydrology program will be assigned an advisor in one of the supporting departments. All support in the form of teaching or research assistantships, office space, and advising will originate from the department in which the student's advisor resides. To the extent possible, student preferences will be honored when assigning advisors and departmental affiliations. For additional information, contact Dr. Gregg Davidson (phone: 662-915-5824, email:davidson@olemiss.edu ) or any of the faculty supporting the program.
Admission information is available through the University of Mississippi Graduate School.

    Hydrology Program Overview
The Hydrology Program at New Mexico Tech is one of the nation's largest and strongest programs in hydrology research and education. Six full-time faculty and several adjunct faculty allow us to offer 16 different courses in hydrology including: Groundwater Contamination, Vadose Zone Hydrology, Hydroclimatology, and Stochastic Methods in Groundwater Hydrology to name just a few. The program is tailored to accommodate students from a wide variety of backgrounds in science, engineering, and mathematics. Facilities include a SUN Unix Workstation network, assorted laboratories for chemical, microbiological, and physical measurements and experiments, and several field experimental sites. Graduates of our program go on to positions in academia, government, and industry. We offer three graduate degrees: M.S. in Hydrology
