... What is Hydrology? What is hydrology? The Concise Oxford Dictionary (1990) defines hydrology as: Hydrology is primarily concerned with the amounts and quality of water moving and accumulating on the land surface and in the soils and rocks near the surface. It therefore encompasses water in rivers, lakes, aquifers and glaciers. Hydrology embraces a wide range of interests including scientific and engineering applications. The diagram below, based on the BHS Research Strategy "Sustainability in a changing world: the key role of hydrology" , illustrates the major components of hydrological science and its interactions with a broad range of disciplines. Hydro-meteorology spans the interface between meteorology and hydrology, and professionals active in this subject may have trained in either or both disciplines. Hydro-geology addresses the science of water in the ground and has, as its name suggests, a close affinity with the geological sciences. Hydro-ecology is concerned with the aquatic habitats required for the survival of particular flora and fauna, and the changes that may occur in these conditions through human intervention.

The Hydrologic Science and Engineering (HSE) Program at the Colorado School of Mines is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to provide students with a solid background in quantitative hydrology and allow them to explore specialties within related fields, with particular emphasis on areas of expertise of the participating faculty. We offer programs of study in fundamental hydrologic science and applied hydrology with engineering applications.
      Our program encompasses:
      • groundwater hydrogeology surface water hydrology vadose zone hydrology watershed hydrology contaminant transport and fate contaminant remediation hydrogeophysics water policy and law
      How the HSE Program works
The HSE Program currently offers M.S. (thesis and non-thesis option) and Ph.D. degrees in Hydrology. Students are required to take courses from a "core list", and a number of electives, depending on the degree pursued ( more details here ). Students apply to the HSE program, but are assigned to a particular home department, depending on preference and background. Students are generally placed in the same department as their advisor, but the advisor can reside in any one of the participating departments.
If you are interested in our hydrology program and the research being done in the program please feel free to contact the HSE faculty member working in an area of interest to you ( participating faculty members

Anyone who solves the problem of water deserves not one Nobel Prize but two - one for science and the other for peace (John F. Kennedy)
Since the beginning, human beings have been dealing with water-related issues of flooding drought utilization , and protection . In the ancient civilization countries (e.g., China), technical administrators, who were assigned by and directly reported to emperors, had the authorization to redeploy the nations' resources to prevent natural disasters caused by flooding and drought. Over 2500 years ago, as the pioneer of flood control, Yu Da created a successful flood control system that is still functioning today along the Yellow River in China. In the modern civilization countries (e.g., the United States), hydrology professionals use both the matured means practiced by the ancient people and advanced technologies such as Doppler radar, satellite-based remote sensing, computer simulation models, and geographic information system (GIS), to tackle problems related to water management. Water is vital to the human race, the ecosystem, and the environment. However, one third of the world's population is suffering from a lack of adequate drinking water. In the United States, it has been estimated that 17 out of 21 water resources regions, including Regions 11, 12, and 13 (within which the state of Texas is located) are suffering from inadequate water supply, flooding, erosion, sedimentation, and the pollution of rivers, lakes, and/or aquifers. Successful solutions to these problems call for concerted efforts among stakeholders, hydrology professionals, and policy makers.
