Hydrology
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Hydrogen sulfide) Next (Hydrolysis) Water covers 70 percent of the Earth's surface. Hydrology (from the Greek word Yδρoλoγια, hydrologia , the "study of water") is the study of the movement, distribution, and quality of water throughout the Earth . It addresses both the hydrologic cycle and water resources. A practitioner of hydrology, or hydrologist , may work in any of several fields: earth science, environmental science , physical geography, civil engineering , and environmental engineering Hydrological research is useful in that it allows engineers to (a) design irrigation schemes, water-supply systems, dams, bridges, and sewers; (b) predict and mitigate the risk of floods, droughts, landslides, erosion, and sedimentation; and (c) assess the risk of contaminant transport. In this manner, it provides insights for environmental engineering , policy, and planning.

References INTRODUCTION (TOC) A B C ... Z Hydrologic techniques, capably applied, are essential for the sound development and management of water resources. The population of our country is increasing rapidly but water use outpaces the growth in population and thus creates demands for water that frequently impinge on the available supply. The mounting demands, the increasing areas of conflict, and the rising rate of flood damage impel a need for refined methods of analysis of water problems. Consider the planning for a water supply for a town or an irrigation project: How much water is available in the rivers? How does this supply compare with the demand? Is reservoir storage needed? If so, how much? Riverflow varies and therefore reservoirs are built to store water to tide over from times of excess to times of deficiency. The problem is to design the storage reservoir so that the demands for water can be supplied despite variations in riverflow. Reservoirs that are built too large waste money and water; reservoirs built too small cannot do the job expected of them.

    Welcome!
The Hydrology Technical Group is part of the Energy and Environment Directorate of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), located in Richland, Washington. PNNL is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy by Battelle Our research activities cover a broad range of water resource issues:
    • We assess the impacts of climate change, hydropower, and irrigation on watershed health. We measure and predict the quantity of precipitation that infiltrates the soil surface and eventually recharges the aquifer. We measure and predict the movement of fluids, gases, and contaminants through the soil and vadose zone above the water table. We measure and predict the movement of groundwater and the transport of contaminants to streams and rivers, as well as to and from wells used for irrigation or remediation activities. We analyze complex problems involving the impacts of seasonal water availability, temperature, suspended sediment, and dissolved gases in river systems, especially the impacts of dams and their operation.
Our solutions to problems can range from the simple (and quick!) to the sophisticated. Which solution we use will depend on your problem as well as your needs and resources.
