Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such as perlite gravel mineral wool , or coconut husk. Researchers discovered in the 19th century that plants absorb essential mineral nutrients as inorganic ions in water. In natural conditions, soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but the soil itself is not essential to plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve in water, plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant's water supply artificially, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will grow with hydroponics. Hydroponics is also a standard technique in biology research and teaching.

DIY Hydroponics - An Introduction to Hydroponics
Of all of the forms of horticulture used over the last 10,000 years hydroponics seems to be the most misunderstood. Simple hydroponic gardens do not require a university degree to create and with a little practice anyone can grow just about anything, often with better results than organic gardening. Successful hydroponic gardening can be a joyfull and rewarding experience and simple hydroponics systems can be created with a minimal investment of time and money.
The word hydroponics is derived from the greek words hydro, meaning water, and ponos, meaning labour. It refers to the many methods of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions instead of soil. The plants may be grown with their root systems suspended in the nutrient solution or in an inert medium, which replaces soil and provides an anchor point for the plant root to grow. There are many different types of growing medium such as perlite, various volcanic rocks or clays and mineral wool. In nature the soil acts as a reservoir for the nutrients plants require but the soil itself is not necessary for the plants to grow. Many different plants will grow in hydroponics but some respond better to others to this gardening technique.
As with traditional organic gardening, where plants are grown outside in soil, understanding how a plant produces food and grows is an important key to a successful

Hydroponic systems deliver nutrients to the plant roots in a water-based solution rather than the plants extracting nutrients from the soil. Gardening is fun. It offers some of the best advantages to living healthy. Fresh air to breathe, aromatic flowers and herbs to refresh the surroundings and then of course home-grown vegetables. I first started using Hydroponics to escape the serious weed and pest problems that had developed on my veggie patch, from there my hydroponic experiments have turned into a hobby. I've tried various plants including herbs and flowers in an assortment of home made hydroponics systems, which have mostly been of my own design. 26th January 1998 26th January 1998 The pump cycles on every thirty minutes and then drains for thirty minutes I'm using a 50 litre nutrient tank and a commercial nutrient mix. 30th January 1998 30th January 1998 I've started some established Tomato Plants in a simple hydroponic drip system. it just consists of two buckets and one container (see diagram) in the morning you fill the top bucket with nutrient this drains slowly via a dripper into the plant Pot/bucket then into the collecting Bucket at the bottom. It takes about 10 hours to empty the top bucket then it's safe to leave overnight, in the morning I empty the bottom bucket back into the top and so on. I must move it from outside the Kitchen window though as Jackie's making threatening noises about eye sores and things.....

7th February 1998 7th February 1998 My bucket hydroponics system has stuffed up I didn't wash the perlite properly and it keeps blocking the plant bucket drain which is not really big enough I'll pull the plant out and wash the perlite and try again with a layer of Clay pellets first then the perlite on top hopefully this will filter the perlite out a bit just hope the plant survives as it is doing really well.

hydroponics . Merle H. Jensen. Department of Plant Sciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 . hydroponics is a technology for growing plants in nutrient solutions
    http://ag.arizona.edu/pls/faculty/MERLE.html
Hydroponics Merle H. Jensen Department of Plant Sciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 Hydroponics is a technology for growing plants in nutrient solutions (water containing fertilizers) with or without the use of an artificial medium (sand, gravel, vermiculite, rockwool, perlite, peatmoss. coir, or sawdust) to provide mechanical support. Liquid hydroponic systems have no other supporting medium for the plant roots : aggregate systems have a solid medium of support. Hydroponic systems are further categorized as open (i.e., once the nutrient solution is delivered to the plant roots, it is not reused) or closed (i.e., surplus solution is recovered, replenished, and recycled). In combination with greenhouses, it is high technology and capital-intensive. It is also highly productive, conservative of water and land, and protective of the environment. Yet for most of its employees, hydroponic culture requires only basic agriculture skills. Since regulating the aerial and root environment is a major concern in such agricultural systems, production takes place inside enclosures designed to control air and root temperatures, light, water, plant nutrition, and adverse climate. There are many types of controlled environment/hydroponic systems. Each component of controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) is of equal importance, whether it be the structural design, the environmental control, or the growing system. Not every system is cost-effective in every location. All too often, importance is given to only one or two of the key components, but the system fails due to lack of attention to any one of the components. If improper attention is given to the greenhouse structure and its environment, no hydroponic system will prove economically viable. While hydroponic and CEA are not synonymous, CEA usually accompanies hydroponics. Their potentials and problems are inextricable.
