The Imaging Science and Information Systems (ISIS) Center is a medical research and development organization at Georgetown University Medical Center that specializes in information and imaging technology for personal healthcare, public healthcare, and national biosecurity. ISIS was initially organized in the 1980s to develop research programs in data compression and to enhance digital imaging network systems (DINS, also known as Picture Archiving and Communication Systems [PACS] or Medical Diagnostic Imaging Support [MDIS]). During the 1990s, the primary areas of interest at ISIS were telemedicine, medical informatics, information assurance and computer-aided diagnosis. Research programs in surgical and rehabilitative robotics and in image-guided therapy were launched in the late 1990s.
