As an evolving field it includes research and researchers from physics mathematics electrical engineering computer vision ... computer science , and perceptual psychology The foundation of imaging science as a discipline is the "imaging chain" - a conceptual model describing all of the factors which must be considered when developing a system for creating visual renderings (images). In general, the links of the imaging chain include: 1. The human visual system . Designers must also consider the psychophysical processes which take place in human beings as they make sense of information received through the visual system. 2. The subject of the image . When developing an imaging system, designers must consider the observables associated with the subjects which will be imaged. These observables generally take the form of emitted or reflected energy, such as electromagnetic energy or mechanical energy. 3. The capture device

If we can remotely probe the structure and nature of an object, we can make an image of it and use that image to develop human comprehension. The Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (CIS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a highly interdisciplinary university research and education center, dedicated to pushing the frontiers of imaging in all its forms and uses. Through education leading to a BS in Imaging Science, and Masters and PhD degrees in the interdisciplinary fields of Imaging Science, Color Science, and Astrophysical Science and Technology, the Center produces the next generation of educators and researchers who develop and deploy imaging systems to answer fundamental scientific questions, monitor and protect our environment, help keep our nation secure, and aid medical researchers in their quest to conquer disease. The extensive K through 12, family, and public outreach activities bring the wonder of the invisible universe to a broad audience.

Innovation in medical imaging has been a cornerstone of the Kettering Health Network since 1976, when the Kettering Medical Center installed the Dayton region's first whole-body, computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scanner. The Imaging Science branch of the Innovation Center builds on this tradition through advanced imaging research driven by the needs of the Dayton area patient population. Our research findings have been used throughout the Kettering Health Network's hospitals, as well as the tri-state region, to improve image quality, therapy outcomes and patient safety.
Current research initiatives include:
  • Advancing the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury Imaging methods to monitor tumor response to chemo- and radiation-therapy Improving the understanding of fatigue and its effects on military and health care personnel Brain mapping of specific neurological disorder Reducing motion blur in medical images using advanced mathematical computation
Scientists in the Imaging Science division hold academic affiliations and teaching duties at a number of universities throughout the country. Our work is featured in international conferences and scientific journals. What's more, our partnerships with major industry players, such as Siemens Medical Solutions and General Electric Healthcare, have enabled us to offer dedicated research imaging scanners at our main campus. Our ability to offer research-intensive imaging capacity in a community hospital environment sets us apart in the Miami Valley region.

Want to get an idea of what a complete ISF Calibration is all about for a token investment?
This simple $29.95 DVD will definitely improve your HDTV. Try it - then imagine what a trained professional with $10,000 of test equipment can do!
NEWS
February 16, 2010 2010 represents another milestone for ISF. ISF manufacturing partners have advanced HDTV calibration capability so we have now launched our LEVEL II training for advanced calibration to take advantage of these new features. All our sessions will now incorporate LEVEL II trainings for ISF certification. We applaud HDTV manufacturers for advances like 3D color management utilities, multiple video processing engines per system to test/deploy/optimize, multiple point RGB Gamma options, HDMI/HDCP/EEDID test capability and many other multiple 21st century advances. New ISF calibration guided software is now featured in all trainings. ISF certification is now a three day course for new attendees, and two day sessions for alumni. Many of our 5000+ alumni have already mastered the new calibration utilities and software, and all are being invited to our new programs.

ACTIVITY GROUPS
Imaging Science
The SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science brings together SIAM members and other scientists and engineers with an interest in the mathematical and computational aspects of imaging. The reconstruction, enhancement, segmentation, analysis, registration, compression, representation, and tracking of two and three dimensional images are vital to many areas of science, medicine, and engineering. As a result, increasingly sophisticated mathematical, statistical, and computational methods are being employed in these research areas, which may be referred to as "imaging science." These techniques include transform and orthogonal series methods, nonlinear optimization, numerical linear algebra, integral equations, partial differential equations, Bayesian and other statistical inverse estimation methods, operator theory, differential geometry, information theory, interpolation and approximation, inverse problems, computer graphics and vision, stochastic processes, and others. The activity group organizes a biennial conference Caption: Poster session at the 2008 SIAM Conference on Imaging Science

About the ISIS Center
Welcome to the ISIS Center. The Imaging Science and Information Systems (ISIS) Center is a medical research and development organization at Georgetown University Medical Center that specializes in information and imaging technology for personal healthcare, public healthcare, and national biosecurity. ISIS was initially organized in the 1980s to develop research programs in data compression and to enhance digital imaging network systems (DINS, also known as Picture Archiving and Communication Systems [PACS] or Medical Diagnostic Imaging Support [MDIS]). During the 1990s, the primary areas of interest at ISIS were telemedicine, medical informatics, information assurance and computer-aided diagnosis. Research programs in surgical and rehabilitative robotics and in image-guided therapy were launched in the late 1990s. In the 2000s, ISIS added biosurveillance and associated information technology projects to its research and development agenda. Today, the ISIS Center is home to 85 faculty and staff whose activities can be grouped into four broad areas: global biosurveillance, medical informatics, imaging science, and medical robotics. This research team manages more than 50 research projects that are funded by various government agencies and commercial partners. Brief descriptions of the research activities pursued by the faculty and the senior members of the research team can be found below.
