Poynton's Gamma FAQ and Color FAQ
(updated 1997-02-27 - yes, this is stale!) formats Permanent, easy solutions to many of the problems in tone and color reproduction in computing require assistance - even leadership - from the developers and manufacturers of hardware and software. Solving that problem is the primary goal of the Gamma FAQ and Color FAQ documents. I dedicated many weeks to developing the Gamma and Color FAQs, and I make efforts to keep them up to date and free of errors. The popularity of the documents is gratifying - they average several hundred accesses a day. However, I receive one or two unsolicited color or video queries each day. That may not seem like a lot, but that's 350 or 700 in a year. Owing to the requirement for me to work to pay my rent, I regret that I can't promise a response to unsolicited queries, particularly those related to specific combinations of devices. (I don't even own a Wintel machine!) For color science issues, you can try the newsgroup sci.engr.color

    DreamSpace: natural interaction
    Introduction
Humans discover and understand their world through visual and conversational interactions. Computers (information/communication systems in general) can be designed and built to allow humans to interact in natural ways, using the common skills of speaking, gesturing, glancing, moving around, reaching out.
    Description
Our DreamSpace allows users to collaborate in a shared space. The system "hears" users' voice commands and "sees" their gestures and body positions. Interactions are natural, more like human-to-human interactions. The "computer" understands the user, and just as important other users understand. Users are free to focus on virtual objects and information and understanding and thinking, with minimal constraints or distractions by "the computer", which is present only as wall-sized 3D images and sounds (but no keyboard, mouse, wires, wands, etc.). As shown in the schematic below, this intuitive human-like interaction is made possible by
    emerging interface technologies:
    • voice input: user-independent, continuous speech

    Description
Current developments in the technology of imaging have led to an explosive growth in the interdisciplinary field of imaging science. With the advent of new devices capable of seeing objects and structures not previously imagined, the reach of science and medicine has been extended in a multitude of different ways. The impact of this technology has been to generate new challenges associated with the problems of formation, acquisition, compression, transmission, and analysis of images. By their very nature, these challenges cut across the disciplines of physics, engineering, mathematics, biology, medicine, and statistics. While the primary purpose of this conference is to focus on mathematical issues, the biomedical aspects of imaging will also play an important role. Conference Co-Chairs Ron Kimmel, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Israel
