    (1) What is LPR?
LPR (License Plate Recognition) is an image-processing technology used to identify vehicles by their license plates. This technology is used in various security and traffic applications, such as the access-control system featured in the following animation: In the above example: while the vehicle approaches the gate, the LPR unit automatically "reads" the license plate registration number, compares to a predefined list and opens the gate if there is a match.
    (2) Technology Highlights:
This technology is gaining popularity in security and traffic installations. The technology concept assumes that all vehicles already have the identity displayed (the plate!) so no additional transmitter or responder is required to be installed on the car. The system uses illumination (such as Infra-red) and a camera to take the image of the front or rear of the vehicle, then an image-processing software analyzes the images and extracts the plate information. This data is used for enforcement, data collection, and (as in the access-control system featured above) can be used to open a gate if the car is authorized or keep a time record on the entry or exit for automatic payment calculations.

    Automatic number plate recognition
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The system must be able to deal with different styles of license plates License Plate Recognition Process Automatic number plate recognition ANPR ; see also other names below) is a mass surveillance method that uses optical character recognition on images to read the license plates on vehicles. They can use existing closed-circuit television or road-rule enforcement cameras , or ones specifically designed for the task. They are used by various police forces and as a method of electronic toll collection on pay-per-use roads and cataloging the movements of traffic or individuals. ANPR can be used to store the images captured by the cameras as well as the text from the license plate, with some configurable to store a photograph of the driver. Systems commonly use infrared lighting to allow the camera to take the picture at any time of the day. ANPR technology tends to be region-specific, owing to plate variation from place to place. Concerns about these systems have centered on privacy fears of government tracking citizens' movements, misidentification and high error rates.

Imaging Science Research, Inc. Company Background Imaging Science Research was established in April of 2001 as a small business in the state of Virginia. Our goal is development of electromagnetic and acoustic instrumentation for remote measurement of the properties of the earth surface, targets, and volume of water and the atmosphere. We currently have contracts to conduct research for the Navy in the development of digital radar systems, target radar cross section measurement, and ocean surface properties.

    • Unprecedented image quality, resolution, coverage
    • Panchromatic and color images
    • Hundreds of full-resolution 20,000 x 40,000 pixel images
    • Color images up to 4,072 pixels wide, sub-meter scales
    • Thousands of high-resolution sub-scenes with 1 to 2 meters/pixel content
    • Hundreds of stereo pairs; production of Digital Elevation Models
    • Philosophy:
Launched in August of 2005, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) is flying onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) mission. HiRISE will investigate deposits and landforms resulting from geologic and climatic processes and assist in the evaluation of candidate landing sites. By combining very high resolution and signal-to-noise ratio with a large swath width, it is possible to image on a variety of scales down to 1 meter, a scale currently afforded only in glimpses by landers. HiRISE will offer such views over any selected region of Mars, providing a bridge between orbital remote sensing and landed missions. Stereo image pairs will be acquired over the highest-priority locations with a vertical precision of better than 25 cm per pixel.

    An Introduction to ANPR
    From CCTV Information
Jump to: navigation search Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is probably the next growth product to take off in the UK,(and the world) in fact, it is already beginning to be the biggest potential earner for installation companies. Network systems were all the hype in recent years but have not really grown as the pundits originally predicted. One problem is that it crosses technological barriers and the needs of available bandwidth were conveniently obscured. On the other hand ANPR technology is completely within the scope of knowledge of CCTV companies, although there are a few new terms and technologies to come to grips with. As with previous new developments there is plenty of scope for the industry to deliver more hype and misinformation. There are pitfalls for the unwary and this and future articles will aim to explain some of these for the customer and installer (or, systems integrator). We are grateful for assistance in producing this article to CitySync for the APR system and Derwent CCTV for information on infrared illumination. We will start by considering ANPR for a single lane using a dedicated camera and go on to discuss some other applications such as multi-lane systems and Town Centre systems with colour cameras.
