From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Immunology is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in all organisms It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in states of both health and disease; malfunctions of the immune system in immunological disorders ( autoimmune diseases hypersensitivities immune deficiency transplant rejection ); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro in situ , and in vivo . Immunology has applications in several disciplines of science, and as such is further divided.

Even before the concept of immunity (from immunis Latin for "exempt") was developed, numerous early physicians characterized organs that would later prove to be part of the immune system. The key primary lymphoid organs of the immune system are like thymus and bone marrow , and secondary lymphatic tissues such as spleen tonsils lymph vessels lymph nodes ... adenoids , and skin . When health conditions warrant, immune system organs including the thymus, spleen, portions of bone marrow, lymph nodes and secondary lymphatic tissues can be

Each year, Immunologists from UCSF and UC Berkeley co-sponsor a two-day conference. This conference allows for scientists from both institutions to share their work and interact with each other in a social setting. Principal investigators or chosen member(s) of the lab give an overview of his/her research-in-progress. A poster session is also held so that others have the opportunity to share their work.

What will I study?
In first and second year you will study general biology courses, gaining background knowledge in a number of biological subjects. If you progress to Honours, you will attend lectures in third year which cover the whole field of immunology together with supporting lectures on molecular biology, statistics and data analysis. A series of practical classes is run in parallel with the lectures which increase familiarity with many current immunological techniques. In fourth year you will continue your study of immunology in more depth, with the opportunity to plan your own work. You will also undertake a supervised laboratory research project and prepare a dissertation on a separate topic based on a literature survey. The Honours programme provides a full understanding of how the immune system works under both physiological and pathological conditions, covering topics such as infectious disease, vaccination, transplantation, cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

The Committee on Immunology
The Committee on Immunology offers a graduate program of study leading to the Ph.D. in Immunology,as well as an undergraduate Specialization in Immunology, and courses for medical students. The program provides multidisciplinary training in all aspects of Immunology that includes a core immunologycurriculum and several advanced graduate level courses in specialized areas. The training also integrates the basic biological sciences with the clinical sciences in an effort to develop new immunological approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of various immune diseases and cancer. Approximately thirty students are enrolled in the Ph.D. program, which has won training grant support from the NIH continuously for over thirty years.

Dr Richard Hunt
PART ONE: IMMUNOLOGY Immunology is the study of our protection from foreign macromolecules or invading organisms and our responses to them. These invaders include viruses, bacteria, protozoa or even larger parasites. In addition, we develop immune responses against our own proteins (and other molecules) in autoimmunity and against our own aberrant cells in tumor immunity. Our first line of defense against foreign organisms are barrier tissues such as the skin that stop the entry of organism into our bodies. If, however, these barrier layers are penetrated, the body contains cells that respond rapidly to the presence of the invader. These cells include macrophages and neutrophils that engulf foreign organisms and kill them without the need for antibodies. Immediate challenge also comes from soluble molecules that deprive the invading organism of essential nutrients (such as iron) and from certain molecules that are found on the surfaces of epithelia, in secretions (such as tears and saliva) and in the blood stream. This form of immunity is the innate or non-specific immune system that is continually ready to respond to invasion.
