Autumn Star Welcome to Autumn Star. Indoor Air Quality - The EPA has determined that indoor air can be 70% more polluted than outdoor air. In fact, one of out six people suffering from allergies does so as a direct result of the fungi and bacteria in their air duct systems.
Green Building - Do your buildings create a healthy environment for their occupants? The building industry is increasingly focused on making its buildings greener, which includes using healthier, less polluting and more resource-efficient practices. Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) refers to the quality of the air and environment inside buildings, based on pollutant concentrations and conditions that can affect the health, comfort and performance of occupants including temperature, relative humidity, light, sound and other factors. Good IEQ is an essential component of any building, especially a green building.
Most people spend 90% of their time indoors HVAC Systems are excellent breeding grounds for harmful airborne contaminants to gather and then spread throughout a building. When HVAC Systems are contaminated with dust, mold, construction debris, bacteria, or insulation fibers the indoor air quality of the facility suffers, putting patients at a higher risk in healthcare facilities, and damaging employee productivity for businesses. When the contaminants are combined with varying temperatures, humidity levels, and airflow in the HVAC System the indoor air environment can dramatically suffer. Not only are there additional health risk with a dirty HVAC System, but a system's operating and efficacy standards are impaired, resulting in higher operating cost for the facility

Indoor air pollution, building-related illness, and "sick building syndrome" have received increased attention over the last several years. Research, conducted by various agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has shown that the quality of indoor air can be many times worse than that of the outdoor air. Given the fact that many people spend as much as 90 percent of their time indoors, the health risk due to indoor air pollutants is a significant public health concern. Indoor air quality can affect people's health and can have economic and legal implications. For example:
  • Pollutants can cause or contribute to short- and long-term health problems, including asthma, respiratory tract infections, allergic reactions, headaches, congestion, eye and skin irritations, coughing, sneezing, fatigue, dizziness and nausea. Indoor air pollutants can cause discomfort, and reduce attendance and productivity. Recent data suggest that poor IAQ can reduce a person's ability to perform specific mental tasks requiring concentration, calculation, or memory. Indoor air pollutants hasten building deterioration. For example, uncontolled moisture can result in mold growth that leads to the structural decay of building components.

    Indoor Air Quality
Poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer, and chronic lung diseases such as asthma. In addition, it can cause headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea and fatigue. People who already have lung disease are at greater risk. The American Lung Association recommends that the first line of defense against indoor air pollution is finding ways to keep the pollutants from being added to the air in the first place. This is known as source control. Appropriate ventilation with clean fresh air can also reduce levels of indoor air pollutants. Finally, while air cleaning devices can be useful, they are no substitute for preventing the air from getting dirty in the first place. Common air pollutants, their health effects and ways to control their sources are listed below:
