Knowledge Management
The implementation of a market-oriented agricultural development strategy requires improved access to knowledge on technology and institutional innovations. The IPMS Project works to assist the Ethiopian Minstiry of Agriculture and Rural Development in developing a knowledge management system that can help facilitate such access to agricultural knowledge and information including indigenous knowledge.
There are many methods, processes and tools available to assist knowledge needs and availability assessment, capturing and synthesis. The project focuses on selected knowledge management tools, approaches, and methods that are relevant and practical to the on-the-ground realities of the extension staff, DAs and farmers in the Woredas in which it operates. Following are areas of knowledge management the project has been trying to develop.

Origami I have before me paper models of a unicorn, a stegasaurus, and a giraffe. Each was folded from a single square sheet of paper without any cutting or pasting. What is the value of these figures? The paper involved is a few pennies. I consumed .10 pizzas while folding them. Yet they are much more valuable than that. Why? I added knowledge . I obtained the knowledge from books written by John Montroll in Maryland, who created the knowledge. He has the incredible ability to see an animal, understand its proportions, and recognize how to convert a square piece of paper into a figure that represents that animal. After he created the knowledge, he transmitted it via books. (1) I then acquired the knowledge and used it to produce the models. Stuff we know

  • Why Knowledge Management?
Long before Knowledge Management became a term du jour , the industrialist giant, Andrew Carnegie, said, “The only irreplaceable capital an organization possesses is the knowledge and ability of its people. The productivity of that capital depends on how effectively people share their competence with those who can use it.” The author of modern management, Peter Drucker, wrote, “The basic economic resource—the means of production—is no longer capital, nor natural resources, nor labor. It is and will be knowledge.” Even the genius of Charles Darwin makes the point, “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” In this age, the only constant is change. Beside the well known changes in technology, there are continuing changes politically, socially, and economically. The ability of an organization to stay current and stay relevant requires a core competence in Knowledge Management. Knowledge Management can transform your organization to new levels of effectiveness, efficiency, and scope of operation. Through advancements in technology, data and information are readily available. The modern business manager is able to discover and learn new measures, new technologies, and new opportunities, but this requires the ability to gather information in usable formats and disseminate knowledge to achieve the organization’s objectives.

Event Planning and Creative For Your Company Holiday Party
Posted at October 23, 2010 While you do not want to (and in any case) to host the holiday extravaganza, we want the staff a bit of fun before their vacation home. Well, a bit of creative event planning, you can do just that. The holiday party is set up other bonuses, a business owner, should consider very carefully. Although the Christmas bonus check is always nice to not create a bond with his employees, which is a basis for team building and employee morale. The one sure way to do this is to make sure that the office is completely forgotten, even if only for a few hours. So to celebrate, it is a social light in a simple way to do this. Why not hold the event in your home? While a restaurant may be easier for a house party creates a warm, intimate atmosphere, especially when it is requested that staff bring to their partners. Pay special attention to the food you serve. May be limited to a few simple food choices, but make sure they are good. Offer some kind of food would be good for the usual bowl of deli meats and cheeses, but paired with exotic salad and artisan bread, this is a definite experience. Or simply ask everyone to come out after dinner, and serve the tea, and offer a make-to-own cafe full of spices, whipped cream, liqueurs and dessert buffet companion. A small firm called tokens. Why not prepare a bag, or storage of holiday? And the gift is not necessarily expensive, but it must be personal. The best gifts are things that the employee has expressed interest in this regard, the boss knows that they are feeling very, very good.

Features - Knowledge Management : Can it Exist in a Law Office? Part 1
By Nina Platt , Published on December 1, 1997 Printer-Friendly Version Piper State Court Directory I attended Online World this fall where "knowledge management" and "intranets" were the buzzwords. Session after session one speaker after another described their involvement in knowledge management and intranet development. As I sat in the meetings I couldn't help but wonder how knowledge management could be applied in law offices, how some librarians are already involved in the management of knowledge, and what needs to happen for knowledge management to occur. What is knowledge management? A recent article in Library Journal defines it as "accessing, evaluating, managing, organizing, filtering, and distributing information in a manner that is useful to end users …. knowledge management involves blending a company's internal and external information and turning it into actionable knowledge via a technology platform" . Another article, this time in Information Week, quotes Gordon Petrash of Dow Chemical Co. who says it is "getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time"

K4D Program Initiative Much in the same way that national leaders are developing strategies to remain competitive in the new, global knowledge-based economy, institutions in the public, private or non-profit sectors, have come to realize the role which “knowledge” can play in enhancing the effectiveness of their operations. In addition to investments in human resources and leveraging the role information technology, they have begun to devote considerable attention to harnessing the explicit and tacit knowledge they posses. This initiative is supported by the World Bank Institute’s  Knowledge for Development (K4D) Program It aims to enhance the capacity of development-oriented organizations in the client countries to achieve greater impact through the application of knowledge management tools and practices. Highlights Recent Events Maximizing the Impact of Agricultural Research in Africa: A Workshop on Research Communications , Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, October 21-22, 2008 The objective of this workshop was to develop the capacity of staff in improving the impact of the research being produced by their research institutes and universities, and to examine how this has been done by their peers. It focused on agricultural research communications and served as a follow-up to the Forum on Agricultural Innovation held in Tanzania in May 2008. The workshop brought together about 60 participants and resource persons from research institutes and universities working on agriculture research, innovation and technology, and was organized by WBI's K4D program in partnership with the Global Development Network, International Food Policy Research Institute, Overseas Development Institute, and the ICT-KM Program of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research. SAP HCM Knowledge Management with SAP Our Knowledge Management: Put Your Knowledge to Use Knowledge is considered a key competitive asset and crucial to the success of many companies. This means that access to easy-to-interpret and structured information is an absolute must. The challenge here is to pool and share the knowledge that comes in various forms and is often scattered throughout the entire enterprise in a central system and a single user interface. However, collecting and linking information is only one of the challenges of knowledge management, making it available in a structured form using intelligent search features is the other.
A mature knowledge management portal provides its users with services that facilitate knowledge storage and procurement. These services are easy to use and intuitive. They enable fast searches without requiring the user to have an in-depth knowledge of the individual applications. Most of the time, these services can be accessed directly through the familiar interfaces and menus.

Journal of Knowledge Management Practice
ISSN 1705-9232 Since the late 90s Knowledge Management (KM) has become a dominant force for maximizing enterprise performance and sustainable competitive advantage in the face of our increasingly complex and ambiguous global business environments. The Journal of Knowledge Management Practice (JKMP) was the first journal in 1998 to bring together theory and case studies in this vital topic to provide progressive researchers, practitioners, and organizations with holistic understanding and practical insight. The JKMP began publishing its first articles in January, 1998 in a bold new free "open library" concept and this tradition has been maintained since that time. We're sure you'll appreciate the synergies this publishing approach promotes. Please go to our "About" page to gain an appreciation of JKMPs publishing philosophy, purpose and scope, and to review membership lists of our Editorial Boards. Full-text current and back issues of JKMP are available through our "Library" page. You may access guidelines for submitting material for publication by visiting the "Submissions" page.
