Earnshaw's theorem proves that using only static ferromagnetism it is impossible to stably levitate against gravity, but servomechanisms , the use of diamagnetic materials, superconduction , or systems involving eddy currents permit this to occur. In some cases the lifting force is provided by magnetic levitation, but there is a mechanical support bearing little load that provides stability. This is termed pseudo-levitation Magnetic levitation is used for maglev trains magnetic bearings and for product display purposes.

What Is the Definition of Magnetic Levitation?
By Shea Laverty eHow Contributor updated: December 26, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Magnetic levitation, or maglev, is science at work , and maglev technology is opening doors to brave new worlds in many different fields, including transportation and weapons development.
Definition
  • Merriam-Webster defines magnetic levitation, also known as "maglev," as the use of the physical properties of magnetic fields generated by superconducting magnets to cause an object to float above a solid surface.
  • How It Works
  • On a permanent magnet, there are North and South poles. While opposing polarities will attract one another, like polarities will repel one another. This repulsion effect is what causes the object in question to levitate.
  • Current Applications
  • Currently, maglev is being used primarily in the transportation industry, with magnetically levitating trains, also referred to as maglevs, being put to use in Asia and in Europe. Because maglev trains aren't actually in contact with the rail, there is no friction, allowing for speeds in excess of 250 mph with little sound.

I am working on potential exhibits for the Gravity Discovery Centre in Gingin, Western Australia, as part of an 'antigravity' display. The GDC is the public interface for the Australian International Gravitational Observatory which is part of a worldwide effort to detect elusive gravity waves. (click to enlarge) It works! (After a week of adjusting and testing) A NIB magnet with some metal pipe is supported motionless, 1 inch below the coil. "..look Ma, no hands.."
The circuit uses two linear Hall effect devices at either end of an electromagnet. The circuit senses a difference in the two outputs which should cancel regardless if the coil is switched on or off. An approaching magnet disturbs this balance and this this output is fed to a PWM (pulse width modulated) supply for the MOSFET output to the coil. Conditions are set so that there is an equilibrium is setup with the weight of the magnet and the electromagnet at a certain point where it will hover. Hmmm.. magnetism opposing gravity - sounds like 'antigravity' to me...
(click to enlarge) The left photo shows the coil and earlier circuit board. The other two are of the neat side and the not-so-neat side. Alright, so I don't know how to do PCB's.

    Levitation magnetic actuator description/claims
    TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The object of the present invention is a magnetic levitation actuator and notably a micro-actuator which may be made by microtechnology techniques.
[0002] These magnetic actuators have a mobile magnetic portion and a fixed magnetic portion. The mobile magnetic portion is in levitation when it is not stuck to the fixed magnetic portion. Such actuators are very promising and in the future they may very well compete with transistor systems for performing switching.

    Magnetic bearing - Definition
A magnetic bearing is a bearing which supports a load using magnetic levitation Magnetic bearings are commonly used in watt-hour meters used by electric utilities to measure home power consumption. Magnetic bearings are also used in high-precision instruments and to support equipment in a vacuum, for example in flywheel energy storage systems. A flywheel in a vacuum has very low windage losses, but conventional bearings usually fail quickly in a vacuum due to poor lubrication. Magnetic bearings are also used to support some trains in order to get low noise and smooth ride by eliminating physical contact surfaces (see magnetic levitation Magnetic bearing advantages include very low and predictable friction, ability to run without lubrication and in a vacuum. Disadvantages include high cost, low accuracy, and relatively large size. In addition, it is difficult to build a magnetic bearing using permanent magnets, and techniques using diamagnetic materials are relatively undeveloped. As a result, most magnetic bearings require continuous power input and an active control system to hold the load stable. Because of this complexity, the magnetic bearings also typically require some kind of back-up bearing in case of power or control system failure.
