Malacology
Malacology, the study of mollusks, has been part of the Academy since its founding in 1812. Thomas Say (1787-1834), Isaac Lea (1792-1886), Samuel S. Haldemann (1812-1880), George W. Tryon, Jr. (1838-1888), Henry A. Pilsbry (1862-1957), H. B. Baker (1889-1971), and R. Tucker Abbott are some of the more notable malacologists associated with the Academy. The collection of recent mollusks at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP) is the oldest in the country, and the second largest catalogued one in the world. It currently has more than 430,000 catalogued lots containing about 10 million specimens, including 30,000-35,000 lots preserved in ethanol. Type specimens of more than 400 authors are represented in more than 12,000 type lots. ANSP has specimens from all over the world. Greatest strengths are in shallow-water marine mollusks from the tropical Indo-Pacific and the Western Atlantic and worldwide freshwater and land mollusks. The Malacology Department maintains its own research website. This site hosts a number of Malacology collection and research databases. Back then he was also pursuing his M.S. in geology with an emphasis on molluscan paleontology at California State University, Northridge. After completing his thesis he was promoted to Project Manager to assist on a subsequent NSF grant to begin collection computerization. When the Malacology and Invertebrate Paleontology (IP) Departments merged together in 1993 Lindsey was promoted to Collections Manager for both sections. Then in 2002 when a new IP Collections Manager was hired he returned to the Malacology Department full time. Initiation Date: October 08, 2001) This section of "Man and Mollusc" has been developed as a resource for the serious shell collectors, malacologists and conchologists. This is a separate section from the site's General Interest and Internet Resource pages. In order for you to get the most of your visit to this section, it is advisable that you have at least a minimal understanding of malacology and its terminology. Of course, all are welcome but amateur viewers BEWARE! " Serious scientific knowledge and terminology onboard!" My hopes and intentions for this zone is that information gained from such a joint sharing of top quality information will help in answering some of the many molluscan questions and problems faced by scientists and shell collectors today. I also hope that it will encourage students to seek out a career in malacology and that shell collectors will get more involved and knowledgeable in their hobby.

The Malacology Holotype List includes all of the primary types housed in the FLMNH Collection. In addition to these holotypes, the FLMNH Malacology Collection has numerous lots of paratypes, cotypes, syntypes and figured specimens. The list is arranged alphabetically by genus and then by species within each genus. Species and subspecies are listed in the genus in which they were originally described. The original citation and the current genus, if there has been a reassignment, are given in the Remarks Section of each entry. This database will be periodically updated as necessary. Support for the computerized curation of the Malacology Collection was provided by the University of Florida and the National Science Foundation.

What is Invertebrate Zoology?
Invertebrate zoology (IZ) is the study of animal biodiversity. "Invertebrates" include all animals exclusive of vertebrates, in an artificial division set up centuries ago. Of the 34 or so major divisions (phyla) of animal life, 33 and 2/3 are "invertebrate". Animals come in a bewildering diversity of forms and pursue an amazing breadth of life styles, including: Sponges live attached to the ocean floor, lack a nervous system, and filter water for food. Except some deep sea species turned to snagging plankton with specialized, hooked spicules. Corals build reefs visible from space, the largest structures created by living things, including humans. Internal microscopic algae feed them, but they also indulge in carnivorous fare. Corals host countless other species in their complex colonies. Worms ... The word may repulse some, but for a zoologist, it means diversity. Over half of the animal phyla are "worms" - elongate, muscular organisms that swim in the ocean, burrow in the sea floor or reef, live in soil, or crawl inside most plants and animals large enough to host "helminth" parasites. Feather duster worms, pin worms, large flat worms that swim like flying carpets are unrelated "invertebrates" all sporting a "wormy" body plan.

Journal of Medical and Applied Malacology
The International Society for Medical and Applied Malacology is devoted specifically to the concerns of applied malacology, i.e., to medical, veterinary and agricultural malacology. The Society is for scientists that work with mollusks as mediators of parasitic diseases of humans and domestic and other animals, and as pests to agriculture, materials, etc. Medical aspects include such diseases as schistosomiasis, paragonimiasis, fascioliasis, fasciolopsiasis, clonorchiasis and eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. The Society's journal, the Journal of Medical and Applied Malacology, includes articles dealing with, e.g., molluscan ecology, distribution, taxonomy, biochemistry, physiology, functional morphology, control, eradication and host-parasite relationships. Also included, beginning with Vol. 2, is an annual literature coverage of pertinent articles on medical and applied malacology published in other journals. In addition to publishing the Journal of Medical and Applied Malacology, the Society sponsors congresses on medical and applied malacology at periodic intervals. The first congress was held in Monterrey, Mexico, in 1987. The second congress was held in Seoul, Korea, in 1990. The third congress was held in Camden, Australia, in 1993. The fourth congress will be held in Santiago, Chile, in 1996.
Directions to Authors
The Journal for Medical and Applied Malacology will publish the results of original work, of either descriptive or experimental nature, devoted primarily or exclusively to the study of mollusks of medical, veterinary and agricultural importance, and their parasites, and will publish reviews of major research in these areas of medical and applied malacology. The articles must not be published elsewhere.

Introduction
Freshwater pearl mussel ( Margaritifera margaritifera (L.)) is an endangered bivalve. Most of its lifetime, it spends partly burrowed in the river sediment, calmly and quietly. If undisturbed, Margaritifera margaritifera can live over a century or two. Every year it adds one more growth layer to shell. These are the growth rings, or annual shell growth increments, that can be used to document its age and growth variations through its lifetime. The study of these increments, their variations and spatiotempral patterns, is the basis for a fascinating science of malacological skeletochronology, sclerochronology. Margaritifera margaritifera is seriously threatened. This means that it may unfortunately face extinction in the future. Decline of the populations that previously occurred due predominantly to pearl hunting is currently addressed to poor water quality, river habitat degradation, threats to its salmonid host fishes and recent climatic change. Sad but true, it is possible that currently as few as approx. one hundred mussel populations may be globally counted as reproductively viable. In Finland , the situation is somewhat better in the north, where the anthropogenic influence is scarce, than in the south, where only a single population is known as viable to reproduce. Since it is endangered

Malacology Section
Malcology is the study of shelled organisms. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History boasts between 75,000 and 100,000 specimens, more than half of which have been computer databased. Much of the Museum's malacological collection was collected before 1970, and therefore represents an important historical record of shelled organisms prior to wide-spread depletion of naturally occurring populations. Many mollusks, especially freshwater mussels, have been placed on lists of threatened and endangered species due to overharvesting and habitat loss or alteration.
