Vita Marina used to be a high quality quarterly magazine on marine zoology with strong emphasis on molluscs. Each issue is a collectors item with useful review articles of interesting groups of molluscs and many colour plates.
Review issues published in the past include for instance worldwide Personidae, Harpidae, Hydatinas, Divaricellas, European Pectinidae, Australian Clanculus as well as interesting faunistic studies and field trip reports (click on contents for a complete listing).
Each issue was like a high quality book on shells but for a much lower price! Please read the

A Dallas-based club for shell enthusiasts and collectors
The Society promotes and stimulates an interest in shells and malacology, as well as in the preservation of natural habitats. Members have diverse interests in specimen shell collecting, seashell art, and other aspects of snails, clams, opisthobranchs and other mollusks. Emphasis is on marine mollusks, but freshwater, land and fossil mollusks are also included in our fields of interest. Activities of the Society include:
  • Educational programs on sea shells Workshops on species identification Publication of the Conch Courier newsletter Opportunities to buy, sell and trade sea shells Social gatherings of North Texas shell enthusiasts Domestic and international shelling trips Field trips for fossil shell collecting
Meetings are normally at the Dallas Museum of Natural History, located in Fair Park in Dallas, Texas, on the third Sunday afternoon of each month at 1:30 p.m. The specific calendar of events is available by contacting Judy Lewis at 972-416-4712 or judy@outdoorplace.org

The land and freshwater gastropods of the Southwestern United States are the largest component of the 28,000-specimen malacology collection, which includes many type and voucher specimens. The freshwater bivalves of Texas are well-represented. Specimens include extant and Pleistocene fossil mollusks. Much of the collection is based on the research of the late Elmer P. Cheatum, Ph.D. (Southern Methodist University) and Richard W. Fullington, Ph.D. (Curator of Invertebrates, DMNH, retired). Recently the Museum conducted surveys for the Texas Nature Conservancy.
Information on this collection is contained in a four-part bulletin, The Aquatic and Land Mollusks of Texas

Tucker Abbott was born in Watertown, Massachusetts . His interest in seashells began early; he collected them as a boy and started a museum with a friend in his basement. After having spent part of his youth in Montreal, he went to Harvard University and became a student of William (Bill) James Clench (1897–1984). Last edited: March 5, 2004 AN IDENTIFICATION MANUAL FOR THE FRESHWATER SNAILS OF FLORIDA Fred G. Thompson Curator of Malacology Florida Museum of Natural History University of Florida Gainesville, Florida 32611-7800 INTRODUCTION The aquatic snail fauna of the southeastern United States has long been recognized for its richness and diversity. Throughout the 19 th and 20 th It became increasingly important to provide an identification manual of the freshwater snails of Florida for many reasons. There were no references to cover the entire state. Those available covered only part of the state or part of the fauna. Our knowledge of the fauna has greatly increased during recent years, and a summary of this information was desirable to facilitate other kinds of study. The bioeconomic importance of snails to environmental issues has become increasingly relevant because of the impact that economic development has on Florida waterways. The first edition of The Freshwater Snails of Florida: a Manual for Identification was published in 1984. It was well received, and it served the interests and needs of many people. As was anticipated, further work on the systematics of the southeastern freshwater snail fauna created the need for subsequent revision in 1999, and for this updated version.

Since the inception of the program in June, 1985, the COA has awarded over $140,290.00 in grants in the field of malacology. Individual grants range between $1,000 and $1,500 per project. The size of total annual funding has grown to $15,868 in 2005. Besides the annual auction income, we now also source from other convention income for grants. Due to the wide fluctuation of our annual convention/auction income, we find it necessary to pay more attention to enlarging our endowment donations as well as direct donations to our annual grant budget. Typically, grants of up to $1,500 each are given to qualified parties undertaking field or laboratory research on recent or fossil mollusks, and other molluscan related projects. Up to 2004, most of the awardees have been citizens or permanent residents of the Americas or students attending graduate schools in the United States. Awards are not made to high school students and rarely are made to undergraduate college students. Elsewhere on this web site, you will see a
