placental mammal , a group also called Eutheria by scientists. Placental mammals are one of three major groups of living mammals. Marsupials , or Metatheria, form another. This group includes all of the pouched animals, such as oppossums, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils. The third group, the monotremes , are far less diverse and less well known. They are warm-blooded, have hair, and produce milk just like other mammals, but they lay eggs and do not give live birth like marsupials and placentals. A fourth major group, the Multituberculata , are entirely extinct, though they were once widespread and successful. To explore the world of mammals, click on the group of your choice in the image below. Mammals themselves are part of a larger tetrapod group called the Synapsida . Synapsids make up one of the two largest groups of amniote vertebrates. Note that not all synapsids were mammals. A non-mammalian member of Synapsida is Thrinaxodon . The Thrinaxodon exhibit is of special interest because it uses CAT-scan technology to view the internal structure of a Thrinaxodon skull.

Welcome to The Mammal Society
We are the only organisation involved in the study and conservation of all British mammals. From dormice to dolphins, bats to badgers, mammals are essential to Britain's biodiversity. We work to identify the threats our mammals face, and halt declines before it's too late. We promote the study of mammals with the aim of offering the best scientific advice for their conservation. We inform, educate and involve people of all ages to raise awareness of mammal conservation issues, in order to help protect them for the future.

MAMMALIAN CHARACTERISTICS Many of the most important and diagnostic mammalian characteristics serve to further intelligence and sensibility, promote endothermy, or to increase the efficiency of reproduction or the securing and processing of food. Basic structural body plan is inherited from Therapsid mammal-like reptiles. Survival through mammalian evolution was perhaps due to their ability to move and to think more quickly than their Archosaurian counterparts. Morphological trends were toward structural simplification:
• skull and jaw bones lost or reduced in size
• limbs and limb girdles simplified, reduced, and less laterally splayed Fossil record provides little evidence on when endothermy actually developed. Diagnostic or Distinguishable Characteristics of Mammals: Soft Tissues
Skin glands:
Mammalian skin contains several kinds of glands not found in other vertebrates.
Mammary Glands: Provide nourishment for the young during their postnatal period of rapid growth.
Milk Composition: Milk composition varies with species:
Cow’s milk 85% H2O
Dry weight 20% Fat
20% Proteins
60% Sugars - largely lactose
also have sweat, sebaceous, scent, and musk glands

Maintaining the health of the Navy's marine mammals is central to the Navy Marine Mammal Program's mission and focus. A full-time staff of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and biologists ensures that necessary care and management processes are in place to provide for all the health needs of the animals. A veterinarian and a veterinary technician are on call around the clock, 7 days a week. The NMMP is in strict compliance with all statutory requirements, DoD requirements, and federal laws regarding the proper care of the animals.
A veterinarian gives a sea lion a checkup. The primary focus of the health care program is to keep the marine mammals healthy and fit for duty. Cutting-edge marine mammal health care techniques and technologies are actively evaluated and developed. Research to support the health of the animals incorporates fields such as immunology, virology, epidemiology, microbiology, toxicology, and vaccination development. In this regard, the Navy continues its time-honored tradition of being an important National resource for the study of marine mammal nutrition, medicine, physiology, and ecology.
The NMMP is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). AAALAC is a nonprofit non-regulatory organization that promotes high standards of animal care and use, improves laboratory animal well-being, and enhances life sciences research through accreditation. It is a non-governmental independent organization that monitors and ensures strict animal care standards throughout the world. Membership is voluntary so it shows a level of care that is exceptional and over and above what is required by law. It includes a triennial site visit and a comprehensive review of all procedures and performance for the care and handing of the animals. The 2002 re-accreditation letter to the NMMP noted: "The Council commends you and your staff for providing and maintaining an excellent program of laboratory animal care and use."

Paleocene mammals of the world
by Martin Jehle Skull of Deltatherium fundaminis , one of the first Paleocene mammals described from North America (see here for a restoration). Its relationships are still debated. From Williamson (1996).
The first 10 million years of the age of mammals
Despite this impressive diversification, most Paleocene mammals are still on a primitive level of anatomy in comparison to mammals of today. Often they show only the first beginning of specializations that characterize their descendants from later epochs, such as optimization of the teeth for a special kind of food or adaptations of the limbs to fast running. The Paleocene mammalian fauna is therefore often called archaic. The beginning of the following epoch, the Eocene, brought about an important modernization of this fauna. Several groups of mammals with more modern appearance spread over the northern hemisphere at this time, whereas the decline of the archaic forms started. The Paleocene is a crucial time in the history mammals. Unfortunately, mammal fossils from this epoch are either scarce or entirely unknown in many parts of the world. Thus we can only speculate how the fauna of whole continents looked after the extinction of dinosaurs. Even where fossils occur, most species are only known from their characteristic teeth, and skeletons are only known for a few forms. Nevertheless, knowledge of Paleocene mammals is steadily increasing. This website tries to summarize what we know about these first ten million years of the age of mammals.

There are about 5,000 species of living mammals. They are divided into three subclasses and about 26 orders (there is no consensus among biologists). Unlike other animals, mammals have body hair, have 3 middle ear bones (the malleus, incus, and stapes), and nourish their young with milk that females produce in modified sweat glands that are called mammary glands. Improvements in reproduction were happening in the vertebrate world too . Instead of laying their eggs, female mammals kept them inside their bodies while they developed. In this way they protected their young, feeding them and giving them oxygen. The young could develop larger brains and more advanced bodies than any reptile. After birth the young were looked after by their mothers, who fed them a rich food called milk. Mammals were the only animals able to make this wonderful food. Then began a long period of care and training when the young learnt from their parents.
Unlike dinosaurs, who probably needed the Sun's heat to keep them warm, the mammals had fur to keep them warm. They also had a better blood system Mammals were also far more intelligent than dinosaurs. Even the stupidest mammal is a genius compared to the brightest reptile. Their long development, when they are cared for by their mother, is what lets mammals' brains grow so much more than reptiles'.

Diversity
The Class Mammalia includes about 5000 species placed in 26 orders. Systematists do not yet agree on the exact number or on how some orders and families are related to others. The Animal Diversity Web generally follows the arrangement used by Wilson and Reeder (2005). Exciting new information, however, coming from phylogenies based on molecular evidence and from new fossils, is changing our understanding of many groups. For example, skunks have been placed in the new family Mephitidae , separate from their traditional place within the Mustelidae (Dragoo and Honeycutt 1997, Flynn et al., 2005). The Animal Diversity Web follows this revised classification. Whales almost certainly arose from within the Artiodactyla (Matthee et al. 2001; Gingerich et al. 2001). The traditional subdivision of the

    An Introduction to Mammals
To understand mammals, it first helps to understand how they fit into the classification system of all animals. Mammals, as a group of animals, belong to the Class Mammalia.
