  • Respiration in Mammals All life respires, or breathes. Respiration in mammals is similar to respiration in other air breathing animals. Respiration is necessary to extract oxygen from the air, which is use by cells. Respiration also carries waste carbon dioxide away from the cells. Although respiration depends on other systems (like the circulatory system)... Why are Dolphins Mammals? While dolphins live, eat and swim in the water they are not considered fish like most sea creatures. Dolphins, like whales, are actually mammals. Mammals of the Southwestern Deserts Although the scarcity of resources in the desert makes it seem like wildlife would not be able to exist there, many types of mammals inhabit the southwestern deserts of the United States. Through adaptation, these mammals have been able to survive the desert's extreme heat, arid lands and harsh ecosystems. Main Functions of the Liver in Mammals All mammals have a liver, which plays some vital roles in the body. The human liver is the largest solid internal organ and gland in the body. It is considered a gland because it produces and secretes a substance. The human liver is located on the right side of the body, beside the stomach and under the diaphragm. Mammals
Mammals class Mammalia ) are vertebrate animals characterized by the presence of sweat glands , including milk producing sweat glands , and by the presence of: hair , three middle ear bones used in hearing , and a neocortex region in the brain. Mammals, other than the monotremes , give birth to live young instead of laying eggs. They also possess specialized teeth and use a placenta in the ontogeny . The mammalian brain regulates endothermic and circulatory systems, including a four-chambered heart . Mammals encompass approximately 5,400 species , ranging in size from the Bumblebee Bat , (30-40mm), to the Blue Whale , (33,000mm), distributed in about 1,200 genera families , and 29 orders , though this varies by classification scheme Most mammals belong to the placental group. The four largest orders within the placental mammals are Rodentia (mice, rats, and other small, gnawing mammals), Chiroptera (bats), Carnivora (dogs, cats, bears, and other mammals that primarily eat meat), and Cetartiodactyla (including numerous herbivore species, such as deer, sheep, goats, and buffalos, plus whales).

Welcome to the Incredible World of Mammals
Introduction
Look around you sometime, the chances are that if you see an animal it is a mammal. Mammals are the dominant life form on this planet at the moment, at least from a human perspective. There are about 4260 species of mammals known on this planet at the moment, though taxonomists are still arguing and species are still being found. Who are the
21st Century Mammals?

Mammals are not the most speciose animal group on the planet, three other groups of vertebrates out-number them at the moment, Reptiles 6787 species, Birds 9703 species and Fishes with approximately 32000 species. Invertebrates, of course, have groups with huge numbers of species that outnumber all the vertebrates put together; Molluscs 80 000 and Insects 1 000 000; while Arachnids with a mere 44 000 species still outnumber any 3 groups of vertebrates put together. Mammals however are big. You can see them easily, and perhaps most importantly you are one. Mammals are there, everywhere you look; large warm-blooded, four-limbed vertebrates whose females produce milk (see What is a Mammal ). Elephants and Whales, Pigs, Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Dogs, Cats, Hamsters, Rats and of course Human beings (that's you and me) are all mammals.

Mammals
Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrate animals who give birth to live youngs (with very few exceptions). Mammals produce nutrient-rich milk with which they feed their young. Common mammals include cats, dogs, bears, rodents, sheeps, cows and humans. Most mammals have hair on their body, specialized teeth, and neocortex, a layer of the brain that gives mammals superior intelligence compared to other types of animals.

The Marine Mammal
Consulting Group (MMCG)
MMCG is an independent consulting firm created in response to increased environmental mitigation requirements for offshore projects. MMCG prepares compliance documents, develops mitigation strategies and provides monitoring teams to avoid potential impacts to marine mammals and other wildlife. These same services are offered in connection with submerged cultural and historical resources as well as with permit compliance requirements.
Establishment of the Marine
Mammal Consulting Group, Inc.

MMCG was established in 1992 by Peter Howorth and Lad Handelman. Howorth has worked with marine mammals since 1962. He is recognized by state and federal regulatory agencies as a mitigation expert. He has worked extensively in this country as well as in other countries. Handelman was a founder and CEO of two of today's premier offshore underwater contractors, Oceaneering International and Cal Dive International.
Our Goal
The Preferred Choice

MMCG is the contractor of choice when it comes to environmental planning and offshore mitigation. In the performance of hundreds of projects during the span of this last decade, no significant impacts to marine wildlife have occurred when MMCG has performed the mitigation. No complaints from the public, environmental groups or regulatory agencies have been made for any MMCG projects.

29. What Is A Mammal
An introduction to the form and function of mammals, just what are mammals and how do werecognise mammals when we see them?
http://www.earthlife.net/mammals/mammal.html
What is a Mammal?
Mammals are animals
Yes but so are Insects, Reptiles, Spiders, Sponges and Slugs. We need to do better than that.
Mammals have a back-bone.Yes but so do Fishes and Frogs and they are not mammals.
Mammals are warm-blooded. Yes but so are birds, and birds are not mammals either.
So how do we describe a mammal Obviously, what we need in order to define a mammal are some characters, or traits that are possessed by all mammals and are unique to mammals, i.e. they do not occur in fishes and /slugs etc.. Fortunately, scientists have already worked it all out for us.
So here are six solid indications that an animal is a mammal
Character One The first characteristic that guarantees that an animal is a mammal is that it (if it is female) can produce milk to feed its young. This milk is produced by modified sweat glands called 'mammary' glands. It is from these glands that the whole group takes its name, 'Mammals.
Character Two The second test is the possession of hair, something humans often have problems with but which they should respect more. No other animal has hair in the same form as mammals, and all mammals have some hair at least at the beginning of their lives - baby whales and dolphins are born with a moustache.
Character Three The lower jaw in mammals is a single bone on either side. In all other vertebrates there are more than one bone on each side of the jaw.

All About Mammals
Mammals are one of the 6 main classes of animals. Animal classes are groups of animals that scientists consider to be alike in some important ways. Mammals are the animal class that people belong to. There are only about 4,000 kinds of mammals. This sounds like a lot, but when you consider there are 21,000 kinds of fish and a whopping 800,000 kinds of insects you’ll realize mammals are a pretty small class! Here are some of the ways that mammals are alike!
Mammals are warm blooded.
The temperature could be freezing cold or boiling hot, but mammals’ bodies are built to maintain just about the same temperature all the time. Warm blood lets the mammals be very active and live in a wide variety of places. Mammals are everywhere. Polar bears live in very cold areas. Camels live in hot areas. Moles live under the ground. Bats live in caves and fly in the air. Dolphins live in the oceans. Fur and fat help protect mammals who live in the cold. Mammals sweat or pant to release extra heat if they live somewhere toasty.

Mammals are the dominant life forms on Earth today and have been for many millions of years, even though the number of living species (somewhat more than 4,000) is small when compared with the 750,000 species of insects. Over much of the world the character of the landscape has been transformed by the activities of humans and the other mammals that they have introduced into new environments.
The class Mammalia includes about 19 living orders of mammals and an equivalent number of extinct ones. The individual species are widely distributed, from the edges of the Arctic ice cap in the north, down through temperate, desert, and tropical areas, to the edge of the Antarctic continent in the south; they also occupy the oceans and major river systems of the world. Mammals span an incredible range of sizes, from shrews and bats that weigh but a few grams (a fraction of an ounce) to the blue whale, weighing more than 100 tons, the largest mammalÑindeed, the largest animalÑthat has ever lived.
CHARACTERISTICS Mammals as a group can be defined by certain diagnostic features, even though some of these features are shared by other groups and not every feature is found in all mammals. Viewed broadly, mammals are vertebrate (see chordate) animals that

Mammals Members of the class Mammalia possess both hair and mammary glands. Their integument is complex and has many glands used for a variety of purposes: thermoregulation and excretion (sweat glands), communication (scent glands), care of the hair and skin (sebaceous oil glands), and for feeding of the young (mammary glands). They are thermic and have relatively high rates of metabolism. In keeping with their higher metabolic rates, adaptations for efficient feeding include heterodont teeth in most species and a secondarypalate to separate the respiratory and food passages (so they can breathe and chew at the same time). The circulatory systems are efficient, and they have a four-chambered heart with separate pulmonary and systemic circulations. Their brains are highly developed, fertilization is internal, and most have placental attachment of the young. Most living mammals belong to the subclass Theria and are thought to have developed from mammal-like reptiles called therapsids during the Mesozoic (about 180 million years ago). The placentals are extremely diverse, occupying all habitable environments on earth. Members of the subclass Prototheria are so different from placentals that they may have developed from a different theriapsid species. They are represented today by only a single order, Monotre (egg-laying mammals). Today's monotremes are found in Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. The only living monotremes are the duckbill platypus and echidna (spiny anteater). Monotremes have several primitive characteristics: They lack teeth as adults, the braincase and other skeletal elements are reptilian in structure, they have a single ventral orifice (connected to a cloaca), and they are oviparous. Although they are homothermous, their body temperature is maintained only a few degrees above the ambient temperature. In these ways they are reptilian in their structure, reproduction, and physiology. Nonetheless, monotremes do possess hair and feed their young milk, so they do qualify as mammals.
