83. ASM | The American Society Of Mammalogists
Promotes the study of mammals and involved in providing information for public policy, resources management, conservation, and education.
http://www.mammalsociety.org/
The American Society of Mammalogists was established in 1919 for the purpose of promoting the study of mammals. Most members of ASM are professional scientists with a strong interest in the public good, which is reflected in their involvement in providing information for public policy, resources management, conservation, and education. The Society hosts annual meetings and maintains several publications. We also maintain a mammal images library which contains many exceptional photographs of mammals. We encourage you to peruse this web site for information about mammals and the ASM. We hope that it will stimulate your interest in mammals, and further your appreciation of their importance. Care and Maintenance of Missouri Bat Caves
Of Missouri's abundant wildlife, bats are one of the least seen creatures that call the Ozark Hills home. Many people probably don't even realize that their land provides a home for these passive little animals.
Why do I want bats on my land?
Bats are beneficial to humans because bats eat huge numbers of insects. Bats are the only major insect predator that feeds at night. A single colony of 1,000 bats, with each bat weighing less than half an ounce, may eat more than 2,200 pounds of insects per yearabout 660 million insects! Some of these insects are crop damaging pests. But even if you don't farm your land, everyone can use fewer mosquitoes in the summer. Bats are unique as they are the only mammals that fly or navigate by echolocation, a form of sonar. Seeing hundreds or even thousands of bat leaving a cave at dusk can be a spectacle well worth the efforts of being a bat cave landlord.
What can I do to protect bats on my land?

  • Home Research Home Welcome to Tara Seal Research Welcome to Tara Seal Research (TSR). We conduct research projects, seal pup rehabilitation and seal population monitoring, and also carry out work on the biology of seals (and occasionally other mammals, such as otters) on a consulting basis. We cooperate with other academic and conservation organisations in the UK and elsewhere. At present we are working with British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) to effect a change in the law to protect seals in Great Britain. We are engaged with the University of Leeds in Caspian seal conservation biology and are currently coordiinating a Darwin Initiative (DEFRA - UK govenment) project 'to identify and eliminate threats to the Caspian Seal', and also coordinating the Caspian International Seal Survey (CISS). 10/31/10 by admin Home Page Blogs Uncategorized I woke up quite enthusiastic about the new plan. The weather cooperated. Good water and wind not great, but workable. We searched and searched and searched and still no whale sightings.  I did a rough calculation and realized with a population of 20 whales, we are looking at something like one whale every 60 square miles. Peace in the Water - World Peace Vigil
UNIFYING GLOBAL VISIONS for PEACE in the WATER
In line with the scientifically proven power of unified intention, the Peace in the Water project aims to bring together the most powerful creative tool available to humanity (OUR COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS and UNIFIED INTENT) with the most fluid carrier of energy (WATER) to ignite a new global vision for PEACE in the WATER and across planet earth. "IT ONLY TAKES A FRACTION OF 1% OF A POPULATION TO TANGIBLY SHIFT THE ENERGY OF A WHOLE AREA..."
What if... we could harness the energy of that fraction of 1% all around the world, and begin to consciously initiate change on planet earth from the inside out?

100. Fossil Record Of The Chiroptera
The UMCP webpage on fossil bats
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mammal/eutheria/chirofr.html
Chiroptera: Fossil Record
Although bats are one of the most diverse groups of mammals today, they are one of the least common groups in the fossil record. Bats have small, light skeletons that do not preserve well. Also, many live in tropical forests, where conditions are usually unfavorable for the formation of fossils. Thus we know little about the early evolution of bats. Some mammal teeth from the Paleocene of France show characters of both bats and insectivores (the group including the hedgehogs, shrews and moles of today). However, since these fossils are only teeth, we don't know what the rest of the animal was like. The next bat fossils start turning up in the Eocene , in sites with unusually complete preservation of whole skeletons, such as the Green River Formation of Wyoming and the Messel Shale of Germany. These fossils represent essentially modern-looking microchiropterans; bats had evolved all of their characteristic features and begun to diversify by this time. In fact, the oldest known complete fossil bat, the Eocene-age Icaronycteris shown at left, shows specializations of the auditory region of the skull that suggest that this bat could echolocate.
