    Marine Mammals in Captivity
The public display industry captures many species of marine mammals from the wild, especially whales and dolphins. The Humane Society of the United States believes that these animals should not be taken from the wild simply to entertain and amuse people, for a number of reasons. Life in the Wild The very nature of these animals makes them uniquely unsuited to confinement. In the wild, whales and dolphins live in large groups (called pods), often in tight family units. Family bonds often last many years. In some species, they last for a lifetime. Whales and dolphins travel long distances each day, sometimes swimming in a straight line for a hundred miles, other times remaining in a certain area for hours or days, moving several miles along a coastline and then turning to retrace their path. These marine mammals can dive up to several hundred meters and stay underwater for up to half an hour. They spend only 10 to 20% of their time at the surface. Life in Captivity This unnatural situation can cause skin problems. In addition, in captive killer whales (orcas), it is the probable cause of dorsal fin collapse, as without the support of water, gravity pulls these tall appendages over as the whale matures. Collapsed fins are experienced by all captive male orcas and many captive female orcas, who were either captured as juveniles or who were born in captivity. However, they are observed in only about 1% of orcas in the wild.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), enacted in 1972, was the first legislation that called for an ecosystem approach to natural resource management and conservation. The MMPA prohibits the take (i.e., hunting, killing, capture, and /or harassment) of marine mammals, and enacts a moratorium on the import, export, and sale of marine mammal parts and products. There are exemptions and exceptions to the prohibitions. For example, Alaska Natives may hunt marine mammals for subsistence purposes, and may possess, transport, and sell marine mammal parts and products. An exception is available for entities that apply for and are granted authorization for the incidental take of marine mammals during the course of an otherwise legal activity.
Marine Mammal Management
Authority to manage marine mammals was divided between the Department of the Interior (delegated to the Fish and Wildlife Service) and the Department of Commerce (delegated to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). A third Federal agency, the

WSPA's whale campaign supports the international moratorium on commercial whaling by discussing the welfare implications of whaling activities, thereby helping to preserve this global agreement on whale protection. WSPA also leads Whalewatch - a global coalition of over 140 animal protection organizations united by the common belief that whaling should be banned because it is inherently cruel.
Establishing new levels of protection for whales worldwide, be it through codes of practice or through national and regional legislation, is essential for the future of these magnificent creatures. WSPA, together with Whalewatch, aims to show the world that the whaling debate is not just about numbers and conservation, but also about the severe suffering that whales experience while being hunted at sea.
Dolphins

Since 1991, WSPA has engaged in dolphin rescue and reintroduction programs, supported scientific research studies to fill information gaps, participated in outreach and education efforts through campaigns and commercial and governmental lobbying, and established partnerships with other animal protection groups that work on this issue. WSPA has achieved several notable successes during this time including a pledge from the Seven Seas luxury cruise line to no longer offer dolphin encounter tours at any of their ports of call. WSPA has also co-produced a comprehensive report on the state of marine mammals in captivity titled “The Case against Marine Mammals in Captivityâ€.

Protective measures for marine mammals include aerial surveys before any live fire exercise in the N-1/BT-3. If whales are spotted during an exercise, the exercise is held in a check-fire status until the animals have left the vicinity. Florida Manatee Manatees are seasonal migrants along the coastal waters of North Carolina. They follow the warm waters from Florida northward along the Atlantic Coast visiting productive estuarine habitats. Manatees have been observed at Camp Lejeune in the Intracoastal Waterway and the vicinity of Mile Hammock Bay. Encounters with manatees in NC are most likely to occur from June through October. Manatees graze on floating plants at the water's surface and on underwater vegetation. They are slow moving marine mammals that are often injured by fast moving boats as they surface to breathe and while feeding.

Understanding Sonar Navy Publications Marine Mammals and Sound All pinnipeds and cetaceans depend on sound to some degree to sense the ocean environment, and some are known to use echolocation. Echolocation allows these animals to determine the distance of objects (food, predators) and features of the underwater environment (seafloor depth, topography) for navigation purposes. They accomplish this by projecting sounds, called sonar clicks, that are reflected back when the sounds strike an object. The farther away an object is, the longer it takes for the echo to return, allowing the echolocating animal to tell the distance. Echolocation makes it possible to navigate and feed at night and in deep or murky water, or at great distances where visual sensing would be ineffective. For example, a dolphin can detect a target the size of a golf ball almost a football field away, much farther than the dolphin can see underwater. Marine mammals also use underwater vocalizations to communicate with each other. Because sound waves travel efficiently in water, some ocean-dwelling animals are able to communicate over great distances through sound. Based on the few marine mammal species for which hearing has been tested to date, it appears that a given species' hearing is tuned to a broad range of frequencies with the greatest sensitivity typically encompassing the range of vocalizations and echolocation (for echolocating species).

A website dedicated to bringing you information and quality pictures of various species of whales and dolphins. Whales and Dolphins are Cetaceans - a group of mammals which belong to the order Cetacea. There are two classifications of Cetacea - Odontoceti (toothed Whales) and Mysticeti (baleen whales). Whales are large, aquatic mammals that breathe air through either one or two blowholes into their lungs. Toothed whales such as Killer Whales Sperm Whales , and Beluga Whales prey on fish, squid, or marine mammals using echolocation. Baleen whales such as Humpback Whales Gray Whales , and Minke Whales feed on tiny crustaceans, small fish and plankton. They use their baleen to filter the food from the water and are generally larger than toothed whales. Belonging to the odontoceti or toothed whale cetacea, and family Delphinidae, the largest family of the cetacean order, there are 26 living species of dolphins. Most species of dolphins feed mainly on small schooling fish and squid although some species prey on crabs, shrimps, and lobsters. Dolphins can be found in all oceans and major seas around the world. Each species of dolphin has adapted to life in their particular marine environment, allowing them to specialize in catching and eating food specific to that area.
