PROLOGUE to ENCOUNTERS WITH WHALES AND DOLPHINS by WADE DOA K Quest for Ocean Mind
In terms of cortical size, degree of folding and cellular organisation, dolphins are the most highly evolved in the whole animal kingdom, and are, in every anatomical way, comparable to ourselves. Dr Lyall Watson Cetacea:
An order of aquatic mammals especially those of a fishlike form with teeth conic or absent: the whales, dolphins and porpoises.
Britannica Dictionary In the following pages I shall give an account of my first, most unexpected meeting with dolphins in the open sea. That episode set Jan and me on a quest which now spans three decade s and two oceans. After years spent in research, I wonder how much further I will go before answering the questions that first encounter aroused. What are the capacities of large-brained aquatic mammals? What is the quality of their mental experiences? Could convergent evolution have produced an awareness, in the sea, with some potential for relating to large-brained bipeds such as ourselves? Could communication provide us with a window into ocean mind? Meanwhile, I have attended two international conferences which considered these questions.[1] I have met curious humpback whales off Cape Cod, amiable scientists in Boston and Washington DC and four kinds of dolphins in the Bahamas, Hawaii and New Zealand. I have corresponded with thousands of people who have met dolphins and whales. I have had global feedback from my first book on this subject[2] and the newsletters we have published per our 'Project Interlock'.

The Marine Mammal
Consulting Group (MMCG)
MMCG is an independent consulting firm created in response to increased environmental mitigation requirements for offshore projects. MMCG prepares compliance documents, develops mitigation strategies and provides monitoring teams to avoid potential impacts to marine mammals and other wildlife. These same services are offered in connection with submerged cultural and historical resources as well as with permit compliance requirements.
Establishment of the Marine
Mammal Consulting Group, Inc.

MMCG was established in 1992 by Peter Howorth and Lad Handelman. Howorth has worked with marine mammals since 1962. He is recognized by state and federal regulatory agencies as a mitigation expert. He has worked extensively in this country as well as in other countries. Handelman was a founder and CEO of two of today's premier offshore underwater contractors, Oceaneering International and Cal Dive International.
Our Goal
The Preferred Choice

MMCG is the contractor of choice when it comes to environmental planning and offshore mitigation. In the performance of hundreds of projects during the span of this last decade, no significant impacts to marine wildlife have occurred when MMCG has performed the mitigation. No complaints from the public, environmental groups or regulatory agencies have been made for any MMCG projects.

MARINE MAMMALS by Jerry Loomis
Retired State Park Ranger definition adaptations sea lions harbor seals ... protection for the future First Marine Mammals It was at least 45 million years ago that animals resembling pigs or cows began to feed along the shores of ancient seas. As the numbers of animals feeding along the shoreline increased, some of the animals were forced into deeper water to find food. This pressure on the shore line and the animal probably forced them to begin diving for plants growing in deeper water. Diving for food became a practical way of making a living, and from this beginning, the largest animals to live on the earth began to evolve. These animals are called marine mammals. Marine mammals are now found in all of the world's oceans and seas. The evolutionary development of marine mammals is probably the most remarkable in the animal kingdom. "Marine Mammal" Defined A marine mammal, like its land-dwelling counterpart, is warm-blooded, is fur-bearing or has rudimentary hairs, and nurses its offspring. All mammals give birth to live young. There are three major groups of marine mammals found here: cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises); pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, elephant seals); and sea otters.

Marine Mammals
Mammals are animals that breathe air through lungs, have hair at some point in life, bear live young, suckle their young, and are warm-blooded. Marine mammals are thought to evolve from terrestrial ancestors that adapted to aquatic life over time and have adaptations to live in their aquatic environment. Marine mammals are found worldwide. It's our responsibility to protect these marine mammal species throughout the Pacific Northwest and within the United States. All marine mammals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) regardless of whether they're endangered, threatened, or depleted. Some are also listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Northwest Region monitors and conserves marine mammals through implementation of those two laws. Its staff identifies research needed to collect appropriate information for management decisions, and manages the marine mammal stranding network The Region implements the Marine Mammal Protection Act to: reduce commercial, recreational, and tribal fishery interactions with marine mammals; reduce marine mammal impacts on salmon recovery; and collect status, range, and distribution information for Northwest species. It also coordinates with state and tribal co-managers, the

Marine Mammals
A variety of marine mammals inhabit the ocean around Kiawah Island. The most common by far is the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Adult dolphins will be 6-10 feet in length and weigh up to 500 pounds or more. These dolphins can be seen frequently in the surf, inlet, rivers, and creeks surrounding Kiawah Island. One of the best spots to see dolphins is in Captain Sam's Inlet which separates Kiawah from Seabrook Island to the west. Dolphins can often be seen actively feeding in this area. Sometimes observers will see dolphins engaged in an activity known as strand feeding. This typically involves a group of dolphins which will herd a school of fish or shrimp up onto a sandbar or mudflat. Then the dolphins will literally launch their bodies out of the water to feed. It is a unique behavior which is fascinating to watch. On rare occasions, dolphins and other marine mammals, including seals and whales, will become stranded along our beach. Typically these animals are sick or stressed in some way. Kiawah Island is part of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network which provides access to professionals trained to handle these occurrences. It is important that the appropriate professionals are notified as quickly as possible so that they can respond to the situation immediately.

Marine Mammals
Selection of various species of marine mammals from around the world.
Marine mammals are one of the most fascinating species to observe in the animal kingdom as well as one of the most difficult as they spend a majority of their lives in or around the water where they rely on their food for survival. Mammals are in a class of their own being warm blooded creatures, having lungs that they breath air through, nursing their young with their own milk and having a layer of hair or fur to regulate their body temperature. The body of a marine mammal is extremely smooth and silk which enables it to glide through the waters at exceptional speeds. Marine mammals can spend an enormous amount of time underwater but they must always surface to breathe. In past years, marine mammals were once the main food source for humans and they were hunted to almost extinction. Year after year, scientists and marine biologists are learning more about the every day lives of each species of marine mammal and many stunning conclusions have been discovered. Not only are marine mammals a very important factor in our world, they are meant to be... (... more information below the photos)
