Peace in the Water - World Peace Vigil
UNIFYING GLOBAL VISIONS for PEACE in the WATER
In line with the scientifically proven power of unified intention, the Peace in the Water project aims to bring together the most powerful creative tool available to humanity (OUR COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS and UNIFIED INTENT) with the most fluid carrier of energy (WATER) to ignite a new global vision for PEACE in the WATER and across planet earth. "IT ONLY TAKES A FRACTION OF 1% OF A POPULATION TO TANGIBLY SHIFT THE ENERGY OF A WHOLE AREA..."
What if... we could harness the energy of that fraction of 1% all around the world, and begin to consciously initiate change on planet earth from the inside out?

Marine Mammals Page 1
Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin
(Tursiops melaena) The bottlenose dolphin is perhaps the most familiar of the sea mammals. Their gentle nature has endeared them in our hearts. These highly social animals have actually been known to rescue humans from danger. They are intelligent creatures with a brain size similar to ours. Some scientists believe they are capable of complex communication skills. Atlantic Spotted Dolphin
(Stenella frontalis) The Atlantic spotted dolphin looks very similar to the bottlenose dolphin except for the noticeable body spots. They are generally somewhat smaller than their cousins. As with all dolphins they travel in close family groups called pods. Pilot Whale
(Globicephala melaena) The pilot whale is a small member of the whale family, averaging about 10 feet in length. They are perhaps better known for the mass strandings in which entire pods of these animals will beach themselves in an apparent attempt at suicide. This behavior has yet to be explained. Killer Whale
(Orcinus orca) The killer whale of Shamu and "Free Willy" fame is a highly intelligent and very sociable animal. It is a standard attraction at most marine parks. Pods of Orcas have been known to work together when hunting for food. They will even temporarily beach themselves to catch one of their favorite foods - the sea lion.

15. Marine Mammals
Marine Mammals fall into 3 orders:
  • Order Cetacea - whales, porpoises, dolphins;
  • Order Pinnipedia - seals, sea-lions, walruses;
  • Order Cetacea
    The entire lifecycle is aquatic. There are two sub-orders based on their feeding mechanism - Mysticeti and Odonticeti
    Sub-order Mysticeti
    Baleen whales - including the largest animals - Blue Whales. They use brush-like triangular plates (baleen) which hang from roof of mouth - maybe 480 plates on each side of jaw - continuously renewed. The plates filter out zooplankton, small fish or squid and the tongue moves this food into the throat.
    • Right whales are skim feeders;
    • Minke whales are lunge and gulp feeders;
    • Grey whales suction feed on benthic animals.
    These whales have mechanisms to increase feeding success. Fin Whales scare their prey into schools while Humpback whales use a bubble-net to amass their prey
    Sub-order Odonticeti
    Toothed whales, porpoises, dolphins. First teeth are retained throughout life - grasp and swallow whole prey. Opportunistic feeders - fish, squid, crustaceans. Killer whales eat warm-blooded prey - cetaceans, seals, penguins. Improve feeding by co-operative hunting. Killer whales will surf onto a beach to capture seals, or tip up ice flows to disturb prey.
    Habitats and distribution
    River and coastal sp. have small home ranges while offshore sp. forage widely and have broad home ranges. Some live in warm equatorial waters, others are found in all oceans eg Killer Whale and Bottle-nosed Dolphins. Large baleen whales migrate from winter breeding in tropics (no feeding) to summer feeding at high latitudes (40% wt gain in 4-5mths). Odontocetes seasonal response is movement on-off shore

    New rules to protect sea mammals from sonar
    January 24, 2009 Federal fisheries regulators announced rules Friday to protect marine mammals during Navy sonar training along the Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. The rules authorize the Navy to conduct the training, while requiring it to take steps to avoid endangering mammals such as whales. Similar regulations were issued previously covering the West Coast and Hawaii by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The rules will be in effect for five years, but the Navy will have to provide annual reports and seek a new letter of authorization for its training each year, said Jim Lecky, director of the office of protective services at NOAA's Fisheries Service. Research conducted over the past 40 years on marine mammals in the wild, especially whales and dolphins, has shown that they truly are our counterparts in the sea.
        They are to the sea what we are to the land—intelligent, social, with language and play, capable of learning, and with populations stretching from pole to pole. Ocean Futures Society is dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of these magnificent animals and to sharing what we continue to learn about them, including the challenges they face, too often from our own species.
        To Take Action please:
        • Voice your opinion to President Obama to keep his pre-election promise to "ensure the U.S provides leadership in enforcing wildlife protection agreements, including strengthening the international ban on commercial whaling."
        Photo: During the filming of “Call of the Killer Whale,” Jean-Michel Cousteau and the OFS team assisted in the successful rescue of a stranded orca, which we named Rakey, in New Zealand. It has been shown that orca who strand and are quickly treated and released can survive in the wild and even thrive. ©Carrie Vonderhaar, Ocean Futures Society/KQED

    WHAT'S HAPPENING AT MERI
    San Antonio Statement Questions Widespread Use Of Flame Retardants
    MERI director among co-authors of statement in Environmental Health Perspectives
    Signed by nearly 150 scientists from 22 countries, the statement raises concerns about a major class of chemicals used as flame retardants in consumer products like televisions, computers, cell phones, upholstered furniture, mattresses, textiles, and automobiles. The authors, including MERI’s director, Dr. Susan Shaw, point to the growing body of evidence that brominated and chlorinated flame retardants are accumulating in humans and the environment, harming unborn children, affecting people’s hormones, and playing a role in causing cancer. Such flame retardants may not even improve overall fire safety, they point out. They call not just for the use of alternative chemicals, but also innovative changes in product design which could reduce the need for toxic flame retardants. The statement's signatories are all experts in the study of environmental contaminants. To read the statement in Environmental Health Perspectives , click here . For the full press release, click
