The Eastern Caribbean Cetacean Network (ECCN) is a regional, volunteer network that records sightings and strandings of marine mammals in the Eastern Caribbean. MISSION
Through research and education, ECCN's objective is to gain community support for the protection of resident and migratory whales and dolphins AND their marine habitat. Please click the links to our New Newsletter and Education Material from the latest Workshops (click on each to download) Newsletters *New!!* Winter 2009/2010 Spring 2008 SIGHTINGS
Over thirty species of marine mammals have been sighted in the Eastern Caribbean as well as the rare West Indian manatee (Trinidad). The Network provides pioneering information about marine mammals throughout the region. Many of the species are known to occur year-round while seasonal residents use these tropical waters as important breeding and calving grounds. STRANDINGS
Records of cetacean strandings (beachings) provide vital information about species distribution in the region, some of which have gone unobserved until recently. Strandings of pygmy and dwarf sperm whales, for example, have shown a more extensive range than previously known.

I ndonesian waters have an exceptionally high whale and dolphin diversity. Twenty nine different cetacean species inhabit these waters, several of which are rare and endangered. More than one third of all known whales and dolphins species worldwide can be found here. The Indonesian Oceanic Cetacean Program (IOCP) conducts research in three remote areas of Indonesia: Bunaken-Manado Tua Marine Park, Northern Sulawesi; the Sangihe-Talaud Archipelago and Komodo National Park and World Heritage Area. The program consists of an integrated research approach including four components:
  • Visual and acoustic surveys of oceanic cetaceans in order to examine distribution and abundance patterns of all species encountered, and identify sensitive marine areas of special significance to resident and migratory cetaceans.
  • Detailed ecological research on a highly specialised deep diving oceanic cetacean - the sperm whale ( Physeter macrocephalus
  • It has established a successful active participation cetacean monitoring program for the region's dive industry and other interest groups.

little j
dr. jenn dearolf I have a longstanding interest in vertebrate biology, specifically how mammals, both neonates and adults, interact with their environment. One of the main ways that animals engage their surroundings is through movement. Movement, in turn, is accomplished through the interaction of muscles with an animal's skeletal system, and thus, I have chosen to study muscle biology. Primarily, I study the construction of muscles from the gross to the molecular level. I then utilize this information to make hypotheses about the function of these muscles.
My distinctive approach to studying muscle function has been driven by the species that I have chosen to study, marine mammals. These animals are difficult to study with standard physiological methods because of their totally aquatic habitat as well as their protected status. However, to understand how the mammalian body has evolved to engage the marine environment, I have undertaken studies of the morphology of both the locomotor and breathing muscles of bottlenose dolphins. In addition, I have investigated the ventilatory muscles of Florida manatees and their role in buoyancy control.

Species identification with DNA
Witness for Whales Home About How to Use The Science ... Data Ownership Search Cluster (Simple) Cluster (Advanced) Maximum Likelihood Example Data Witness for the Whales is a service for the phylogenetic identification of cetacean species (whales, dolphins and porpoises) using DNA sequences following the general methodology first described by Baker and Palumbi (1994) and Baker, Cipriano and Palumbi (1996). Witness for the Whales comprises annotated and curated sets of reference nucleotide sequences from a comprehensive and representative range of cetaceans. Witness for the Whales is implemented within DNA Surveillance, a web-based program that applies standard phylogenetic methods to identify the affinity of user submitted DNA sequences. Together, the Witness for the Whales datasets and the DNA Surveillance programs provide an integrated approach to the molecular taxonomy of cetaceans.
Please report problems to Scott Baker (scott.baker@oregonstate.edu) and Howard Ross (h.ross@auckland.ac.nz) under subject header "DNA surveillance".

We wish to inspire the public at large about the otters' unique behavior and habitat. During the fur trade of the 18th and 19th centuries, southern sea otters were hunted to near extinction. Today only about 2,200 otters can be found off California's central coast. Since January 1977, US Fish and Wildlife Service has placed sea otters on the Endangered Species list so they are protected by state and federal laws. Currently
