89. MST CONFERENCES: Symposia And Courses On Materials And Surface Related Phenomena
Sponsors international meetings on topics of interest to both researchers and applied industrial applications.
http://www.mstconf.com/
MST Conferences ( Materials Science and Technology Conferences ) provides a service to scientists and technical professionals worldwide by sponsoring international conferences on topics of critical interest and importance to both fundamental scientific research and applied industrial applications. A primary focus of these conferences deals with surface related phenomena that profoundly affect the chemico-physico behavior of thin films and coatings. These conferences seek to bring together the leading investigators in their field from all over the world. Each conference is fully documented in either a special issue of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology or a bound volume. In either case all papers are peer reveiwed by at least two referees. The conference director Dr. Kash Mittal rigorously edits the contributions to each volume using the experience gained of having documented over 27 international conferences. The conference chairman Dr. Robert H. Lacombe is a senior scientist with over 30 years experience in the field of materials science and technology ranging from thin film applications in the microelectronics industry to large scale modeling for nondestructive inspection of complex structures. Dr. Lacombe handles the technical aspects of the conferences and teaches technical courses on adhesion measurement techniques, characterization of thin film insulators and fracture mechanics of coatings.

Welcome
Over the last 100 years, materials scientists have made tremendous advances in developing revolutionary materials that shape everyday life. Polymers, high purity silicon and glass fibers, and carbon fiber composites are but a few examples of materials that fundamentally impact life in the 21st century. Building on a rich history of discovery and ingenuity, materials scientists at Cornell are pursuing a new paradigm that will take our discipline in exciting new directions. This paradigm no longer focuses on a particular class of material, but rather on complex systems: energy and environmental technology biotechnology and life sciences nanotechnology and information and telecommunications technology . Our goal is to make materials and devices that are stronger smarter and smaller

Glass and Ceramics
Chair: Prof. Dr. Peter Greil
Prof. Dr. Andreas Roosen, Prof. Dr. Lothar Wondraczek
Research is focused on fundamental aspects of novel processing techniques and on microstructure-property correlations. Advanced glasses, ceramics, and composites are being investigated for applications in medicine, in energy and environmental fields, in electronics, and in transportation systems.
In the field of ceramic processing (Peter Greil ) research centres on high precision manufacturing of ceramics and metal composites via Rapid Prototyping techniques and Polymer Precursor techniques. In the field of functional ceramics (Andreas Roosen ) major activities are directed on ceramic multilayer technology including LTCC. Research in the field of glass (Lothar Wondraczek ) includes physical properties of special glasses, microstructured optical glasses, and microbial corrosion of glasses.

NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS 2010 The Nobel Prize in Physics 2010 was awarded jointly to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene". We would like to send our congratulations to both, and to the group of theoreticians at the ICMM that have collaborated with them, in particular Prof. Francisco Guinea and Dr. Eduardo V. Castro. To celebrate this prize we have opened a special section on graphene that collects both basic information on this singular material (in Spanish) and a selection of the joint works of Geim, Novoselov and Guinea.
The Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM) is an institute of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) (Spanish National Research Council) founded in December 1986, that belongs to the Area of Science and Technology of Materials, one of the eight Areas in which the CSIC divides its research activities.
Our mission is to create new fundamental and applied knowledge in materials of high technological impact, their processing and their transfer to the productive sectors at local, national and European scales (the true value of materials is in their use), the training of new professionals, and the dissemination of the scientific knowledge. Therefore, our objective is to become an international reference Centre for Materials, contributing in an effective manner to the development of the Knowledge Society, a centre of attraction either for the new professionals demanding training, and/or for established scientists requiring to broaden or update their knowledge. Simultaneously, the ICMM should be a national reference for the innovative industry, particularly at the nanometre scale and emergent fields.
