The mathematician Benjamin Peirce called mathematics "the science that draws necessary conclusions". Albert Einstein , on the other hand, stated that "as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality." Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning , mathematics evolved from counting calculation measurement , and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Practical mathematics has been a human activity for as far back as

Aristotle and Mathematics
First published Fri Mar 26, 2004 Aristotle uses mathematics and mathematical sciences in three important ways in his treatises. Contemporary mathematics serves as a model for his philosophy of science and provides some important techniques, e.g., as used in his logic. Throughout the corpus, he constructs mathematical arguments for various theses, especially in the physical writings, but also in the biology and ethics. Finally, Aristotle's philosophy of mathematics provides an important alternative to platonism. In this regard, there has been a revival of interest in recent years because of its affinity to physicalism and fictionalisms based on physicalism. However, his philosophy of mathematics may better be understood as a philosophy of exact or mathematical sciences. This article will explore the influence of mathematical sciences on Aristotle's metaphysics and philosophy of science and will illustrate hisuse of mathematics.

Good News for Calculus and Algebra II Teachers
Sunday October 31, 2010 Texas Instruments (TI) has released some great additions to Math Nspired, their
free lesson resource center, to include Calculus and Algebra 2.  Their resources are easier than ever to locate as they've colsolidated them all in one place.
From the TI press release: "We looked at national and state test scores to identify areas where student performance indicated 'tough to learn' concepts. Algebra 2 Nspired and Calculus Nspired represent investments in educators, their students and math education," said Tom Dick, professor at Oregon State University who consulted with TI on the content development. "It was critical that we develop lesson resource modules that Algebra 2 and Calculus teachers could readily use to help their students understand the important mathematics." See the TI Download Centre.

Title: Unconstrained steepest descent method for multicriteria optimization on Riemmanian manifolds Authors: G. C. Bento O. P. Ferreira P. R. Oliveira Comments: 20 pages; paper submitted to Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society on march 01, 2010 Subjects: Numerical Analysis (math.NA) In this paper we present a steepest descent method with Armijo's rule for multicriteria optimization in the Riemannian context. The well definedness of the sequence generated by the method is guaranteed. Under mild assumptions on the multicriteria function, we prove that each accumulation point (if they exist) satisfies first-order necessary conditions for Pareto optimality. Moreover, assuming quasi-convexity of the multicriteria function and non-negative curvature of the Riemannian manifold, we prove full convergence of the sequence to a Pareto critical.

Mathematics is useful for solving problems that occur in the real world, so many people, besides mathematicians, study and use mathematics. Today, mathematics is needed in many jobs. Business science engineering , and construction need some knowledge of mathematics. Mathematicians solve problems by using logic . Mathematicians often use deduction Deduction is a special way of thinking to discover and prove new truths using old truths. To a mathematician, the reason something is true is just as important as the fact that it is true. Using deduction is what makes mathematical thinking different from other kinds of thinking.
