Home Library Education Encyclopedia Mathematics teachers are educated in diverse ways, depending to a great extent on the context in which the education occurs. Typically, pre-service teacher preparation occurs at the baccalaureate level, while in-service education occurs at the graduate level or is conducted by the local school systems in which the teacher is employed. There are, however, some pre-service programs in which participants acquire a masters' degree prior to beginning their teaching career. foci of the different programs. The Evolution of Mathematics Teacher Education Before 1960 most teacher education programs for secondary school mathematics teachers consisted of training in mathematics, a methods course of some kind, and student teaching. Smaller programs at colleges or universities tended to have generic methods courses that addressed the needs of secondary teachers of all subjects. One can glean an understanding of the content-specific methods courses by considering the methods texts of that time. For example, the popular 1960 methods text by Charles Butler and Frank Wren (first published in 1941) consisted of two sections. The first section dealt with general issues such as planning for instruction. The second section was

Euclid , Greek mathematician, 3rd century BC, as imagined by Raphael in this detail from The School of Athens Mathematics (colloquially, maths or math ) is the body of knowledge centered on such concepts as quantity structure, space, and change, and also the academic discipline that studies them. Benjamin Peirce called it "the science that draws necessary conclusions". Other practitioners of mathematics maintain that mathematics is the science of pattern, and that mathematicians seek out patterns whether found in numbers, space, science, computers, imaginary abstractions, or elsewhere. Mathematicians explore such concepts, aiming to formulate new conjectures and establish their truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting, calculation, measurement , and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Knowledge and use of basic mathematics have always been an inherent and integral part of individual and group life. Refinements of the basic ideas are visible in mathematical texts originating in the ancient Egyptian

Do you think that is impossible? It isn't if you are willing to read and study many books and videos. You can't learn everything from formal school class lectures - they can't allow time for the information to be competely absorbed. With books and videos at home you can go at your pace. The bulk of your mathematics learning will come from reading, working problems, and studying various books and videos on your own. And you can do this at your convenience. Since there is no pressure, you can learn without stress. You can learn mathematics by studying the information on this web page and in the many wonderful books and multimedia materials. Great for homeschoolers and brick and mortar school students. You can go slow with books, and videos can be paused at any time.

This text is in PDF format, and is my attempt to provide a less expensive alternative to some of the printed books currently available for this course. If you find any mistakes or any parts that are unclear or any topics that you think I should not have omitted, please tell me. I intend this for the undergraduate level, providing a one-semester bridge between some of the introductory math courses and the physics courses in which we expect to use the mathematics. This is the course typically called Mathematical Methods in Physics. The text itself has been expanded so that it now contains far more than a one semester course. The text is available as a single file to download and save, or as the separate chapters. The advantage of the single file is that the internal hyperlinks will take you anywhere in the book, while the internal links in the separate chapters are confined to that chapter. The single file contains a full index (also linked). If you want to read this on the screen there are two formats. The first is for a smaller screen and is formatted so that the page is wider than it is tall. The format for a large monitor is designed with small margins, so that you can more easily use a two-page display.

The Mathematics Test is divided into two equally weighted parts, each containing 25 questions. On Part I of the test, you may use the Casio fx-260 calculator to compute answers. A calculator will be provided for your use at the official GED Testing Center. Because estimation and mental math are critical skills, you are not permitted to use the calculator on Part II of the test. A math formulas page is provided for your reference during the test. The Mathematics Test assesses your understanding of mathematical concepts and the application of those concepts to various real-world situations. The following four major areas are tested on the Mathematics Test: Alternate-Format Questions Although 80% of the mathematics questions are multiple choice, 20% of the questions require you to construct your own answer. Rather than select from five choices, you must record answers on either standard or coordinate plane grids. Both Parts I and II of the Mathematics Test directions for standard grid and coordinate plane grid SAMPLE QUESTIONS Directions: Choose the one best answer to each question.

    Research Activities
My work focuses on mathematical physics, with an emphasis on string theory, M-theory, and gauge theories more generally.
My work places particular emphasis on the underlying mathematical structures and applications to and from modern mathematics.
    Specific research interests include:
  • The theory of branes and generalized abelian gauge theories in supergravity.
This involves interesting topological issues related to generalized differential cohomology theories, especially K-theory.
There are also interesting relations to the theory of self-dual fields, anomaly cancellation, and noncommutative geometry.
