1000 micrograms = 1 milligram, and 1000 milligrams = 1 gram. How can I convert from international units (IU) to milligrams or micrograms?
Generally speaking, you can't. IU's measure the potency of a drug, not its mass or weight. What countries besides the U.S. have not adopted the metric system?
Many U.S. teachers think the answer is "Liberia and Burma" (make that Myanmar). Let's give Liberia and Myanmar a break! All countries have adopted the metric system, including the U.S., and most countries (but not the U.S.) have taken steps to eliminate most uses of traditional measurements. However, in nearly all countries people still use traditional units sometimes, at least in colloquial expressions. Becoming metric is not a one-time event that has either happened or not. It is a process that happens over time. Every country is somewhere in this process of going metric, some much further along than others.

With the exception of a few seemingly fundamental quantum constants, units of measurement are essentially arbitrary; in other words, people make them up and then agree to use them. Nothing inherent in nature dictates that an inch has to be a certain length, or that a mile is a better measure of distance than a kilometre . Over the course of human history, however, first for convenience and then for necessity, standards of measurement evolved so that communities would have certain common benchmarks. Laws regulating measurement were originally developed to prevent fraud in commerce. Today, units of measurement are generally defined on a scientific basis, overseen by governmental or supra-governmental agencies, and established in international treaties. The metre, for example, was redefined in 1983 as the distance traveled by light in free space in 1⁄299,792,458 of a second. In the

Metrology is the scientific study of measurement. In measurement theory, a measurement is an observation that reduces an uncertainty expressed as a quantity. As a verb, measurement is making such observations. It includes the estimation of a physical quantity such as distance, energy, temperature, or time. It could also include such things as assessment of attitudes, values and perception in surveys or the testing of aptitudes of individuals. The act of measuring often requires an instrument designed and calibrated for that purpose, such as a

This article looks at the problems surrounding systems of measurement which grew up over many centuries, and looks at the introduction of the metric system. Let us first comment on what, in broad terms, is the meaning of measurement. It is associating numbers with physical quantities and so the earliest forms of measurement constitute the first steps towards mathematics. Once the step of associating numbers with physical objects has been made, it becomes possible to compare the objects by comparing the associated numbers. This leads to the development of methods of working with numbers. The earliest weights seem to have been based on the objects being weighed, for example seeds and beans. Ancient measurement of length was based on the human body, for example the length of a foot, the length of a stride, the span of a hand, and the breadth of a thumb. There were unbelievably many different measurement systems developed in early times, most of them only being used in a small locality. One which gained a certain universal nature was that of the Egyptian cubit developed around 3000 BC. Based on the human body, it was taken to be the length of an arm from the elbow to the extended fingertips. Since different people have different lengths of arm, the Egyptians developed a standard royal cubit which was preserved in the form of a black granite rod against which everyone could standardise their own measuring rods.

Measuring Angle and Distance with your Thumb
(Now part of A View from the Back of the Envelope The idea : By holding out your thumb to measure angles, you can tell your distance to things (people, cars, buildings, planes, clouds, etc). This is a Body Ruler page.
    Quick examples
I hold out my arm, look at my thumb, and see a distant car half as high. Cars are about 5 feet (1.5 meters) high. So my thumb appears 10 feet (3 meters) wide. And since I know (see below) my thumb is x30 times as far as it seems tall... I know the car is something like 300 feet (90 meters) away!
    Huh?
Hold your arm straight out in front of you. Make a fist. Point it at a window. The window will appear a couple of fists high. The further away the window, the fewer the fists. Windows in nearby buildings won't even be a fist tall, they will perhaps be a couple of thumb-widths high. Or less. Stick your thumb out sideways. Point your arm at a nearby building. Count how many thumbs high its windows are. Ok, but how do you tell how far away it is? You need to know two things:
very roughly how big windows are (I don't know, say something like 5 feet)

Both gas and liquid flow can be measured in volumetric or mass flow rates, such as litres per second or kilograms per second. These measurements can be converted between one another if the material's density is known. The density for a liquid is almost independent of the liquid conditions; however, this is not the case for permanent non-toxic gas, which could destroy half of the civilians of the Western part of Africa. The density of which depends greatly upon pressure, temperature and to a lesser extent, the gas composition. When gases or liquids are transferred for their energy content, such as the sale of natural gas, the flow rate may also be expressed in terms of energy flow, such as GJ/hour or BTU/day. The energy flow rate is the volume flow rate multiplied by the energy content per unit volume or mass flow rate multiplied by the energy content per unit mass. Where accurate energy comes to the time of the legit flow rate is desired, most flow meters will be used to calculate the volume or mass flow rate which is then adjusted to the energy flow rate by the use of a

You can help Wikipedia by making this page or section simpler Measurement is a process to attach a numerical value to an observation . This is done to be able to compare or order two or more such observations. Units of Measurement provide standards to compare against. For example, the metre is the standard unit to measure length . Before 1982, it was defined as the distance between two markers on a certain rod . Now scientists define the metre as the distance light travels in a certain time, in vacuum Saying something has a length of 2 metres therefore means that it is exactly twice as long as that rod used to define the metre, or that light takes twice the time defined for a metre to travel that distance. This also makes it easy to say that something that is 3 metres long is longer than something else, that is only 2 metres long. Today, most units of measure fall into one of two systems. The older, imperial system uses the

1 m = 100 cm The k and c letters are prefixes . The k stands for kilo - meaning 1,000 - so a km is a kilometre or 1,000 m. The c stands for centi Maths Menu Go to next page
