History of metallurgy in the Indian subcontinent The first evidence of human metallurgy dates from the 5th and 6th millennium BC, and was found in the archaeological sites of Majdanpek Yarmovac and Plocnik Serbia . To date, the earliest copper smelting is found at the Belovode site, these examples include a copper axe from 5,500BC belonging to the Vincha culture Other signs of human metallurgy are found from the third millennium BC in places like Palmela (Portugal)

    INTRODUCTION
Z zinc extends its life, helps saving natural resources and energy .
Besides, its use in galvanizing of iron and steel, it finds applications in :
    • Die casting alloys, for automotive equipment and house hold appliances, fitting, toys, tools , Brasses, Dry cells, Agriculture, Chemicals, for tyre and rubber goods, Pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and cosmetics etc.
With industrial development in India use of zinc has increased considerably, however, specific consumption is much lower as compared to other developing countries. The most important raw material for the production of zinc is sulphide ore from which zinc is extracted either through pyro-metallurgical route or through hydro-metallurgical-electrowin route. At present nearly 80% of the worlds production of primary zinc is through hydrometallurgical route the balance is through pyro-metalurgical route.

    Metallurgy
    • Alchemy a ) Alchemy was the science (or pseudo-science) of combined disciplines in chemistry, metallurgy, physics, and mysticism with the goal of transforming base metals into precious metals.
    • Alloy n ) A combination of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, and where the resulting material has metallic properties. 14 carat (58%) gold is an alloy of pure gold (24k) mixed with other elements.
    • Alluvial Gold a ) Gold that is found in the soil or sediments deposited by a river, stream, or other running water. (aka Placer of Surface Gold).
    • Annealing v ) Multi-phased heat and stress treatment that alters the microstructure of a metal adding strength, pliability, and hardness.
    • Adamantine a ) Refers to the light reflecting properties of a metallic surface, known as metallic lustre
    • Base Metal a, n ) Base metal is a term used to refer to a metal that oxidizes or corrodes relatively easily as with copper, iron, nickel, lead and zinc.
    • Carat n ) The term "Carat", "Karat" or "k" is used to indicate the amount of pure (24k) gold in the alloy. Lower Carat ratings indicate proportionally less pure gold.

For over forty years we have covered all aspects of the history of metals and associated materials from prehistory to the present. Our members' interests range from processes and production through technology and economics to archaeology and conservation. The Society holds several conferences and meeting each year which showcase the latest research, and explore a wide range of metallugical landscapes and locations. Members receive a scholarly journal and a newsletter The Society's datasheets provide practical help to those excavating and recording the archaeological remains of early metalworking. We provide small grants for research and travel. The Society takes an active role in the conservation of metallurgical sites.
