Aluminum Metallurgy In high-purity form, aluminum is soft and ductile.
Most commercial uses, however, require greater strength than pure aluminum affords. This is achieved in aluminum first by the addition of other elements to produce various alloys, which singly or in combination impart strength to the metal. Further strengthening is possible by means which classify the alloys roughly into two categories, non-heat-treatable and heat-treatable. Non-heat-treatable Alloys- The initial strength of alloys in the group depends upon the hardening effect of elements such as manganese, silicon, iron and magnesium, singly or in various combinations. The non-heat-treatable alloys are usually designated, therefore, in the 1000, 3000, 4000 or 5000 series. Since these alloys are work-hardenable, further strengthening is possible by various degrees of cold working, denoted by the “H” series of tempers. Alloys containing appreciable amounts of magnesium when supplied in strain hardened tempers are usually given a final elevated-temperature treatment called stabilizing to insure stability of properties. Alloys for Heat Treating- The initial strength of alloys in this group is enhanced by the addition of alloying elements such as copper, magnesium, zinc and silicon. Since these elements singly or in various combinations show increasing solid solubility in aluminum with increasing temperature, it is possible to subject them to thermal treatments which will impart pronounced strengthening.

METALLURGY
As important as manufacture and design, the selection of a suitable material for your extrusion process is critical. Concern must be given to a variety of steel properties including yield, tensile strength, elongation, and ductility to name a few. With over sixty years of manufacturing experience, we have developed an extensive data base of metallurgical solutions for all types of processing problems. An example of our problem solving capabilities is detailed below: Problem: die leakage after cleaning die in a high temp oven. Analysis: Solution: Problem: Breakage of cam race manufactured from high hard (60Rc) D2 tool steel Analysis: reviewed location of breakage and part design/function and concluded that D2 lacked the ductility necessary to perform as required Solution: recommended S7 tool steel to improve impact toughness of cam race while still providing wear resistance required.

change How to make metals -or- get metals from rocks
The rocks are made of a metal with oxygen , called an oxide . Separating the oxygen off the metal is called smelting This is done with chemistry or electricity . It happens often in very high temperature. This is the first step in metallurgy. A rock containing enough metal to be profitable is called ore Iron is smelted from iron ore in large reactors called blast furnaces . A blast furnace is a tall vertical structure which is fed with coke, iron ore and limestone. When hot air is blown in the blast furnace, the coke will burn and reduce the oxygen off the ore, producing bare iron and carbon dioxide. The limestone will bind off any remaining bedrock. The iron melts in the hot temperature and is tapped off in liquid phase at the bottom. It is then worked into steel. The limestone and bedrock form a compound called slag. It can be used for making bricks, concrete or road topping. Aluminum is smelted in electric ovens called electric arc furnaces. The aluminum ore is poured on the bottom of the furnace and electric current is led through the ore. The temperature rises so high that the oxygen separates, leaving metallic aluminum.

Metallurgy
Metallurgy is a domain of materials science and of materials engineering that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements , their intermetallic compounds , and their mixtures, which are called alloys. List of Alloys. Extractive metallurgy is the practice of separating metals from their ore, and refining them into a pure metal. In order to convert a metal oxide or sulfide to a metal, the metal oxide must be reduced either chemically or electrolytically. Metallurgy in Production Engineering In production engineering, metallurgy is concerned with the production of metallic components for use in consumer or engineering products. This involves the production of alloys, the shaping, the heat treatment and the surface treatment of the product. The task of the metallurgist is to achieve design criteria specified by the mechanical engineer, such as cost, weight, strength, toughness, hardness, corrosion resistance and performance in extremes of temperature. Common engineering metals are aluminium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel, titanium and zinc. These are most often used as alloys. Much effort has been placed on understanding one very important alloy system, that of purified iron, which has carbon dissolved in it, better known as steel. Normal steel is used in low cost, high strength applications where weight and corrosion are not a problem. Cast irons, including ductile iron are also part of this system. Stainless steel or galvanized steel are used where resistance to corrosion is important. Aluminium alloys and magnesium alloys are used for applications where strength and lightness are required.

The hilt and chain had once been part of a sword of unusual size; but the blade had rusted away and become useless. Joseph then turned the rock back, took the article in the pillow-case, and returned to the wagon; the devils, with more hideous yells than before, followed him to the fence; as he was getting over the fence, one of the devils struck him with a blow on his side, where a black and blue spot remained three or four days; but Joseph persevered and brought the article safely home. “I weighed it, “ said Mr. Smith, Senior, “and it weighed thirty pounds.” In answer to our question, as to what it was that Joseph had thus obtained, he said it consisted of a set of gold plates, about six inches wide, and nine or ten inches long. They were in the form of a book, but were held together by several gold rings, in such a way that the plates could be opened similar to a book. Under the first plate, or lid, he found a pair of spectacles, about one and a half inches longer than those used at the present day, the eyes not of glass, but of diamond.“ Joseph Smith Sr.’s 1830 interview with Fayette Lapham (Early Mormon Documents I, p 462)
