Welcome to Microbiology Home! Microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa and their many relationships to humans, animals and plants. Microbiologists apply their knowledge to public health and sanitation; food production preservation and industrial fermentations which produce chemicals, drugs, antibiotics, alcoholic beverages and various food products; prevention and cure of diseases in plants, animals and humans; biodegradation of toxic chemicals and other materials present in the environment; insect pathology; and other activities which seek to control microbes, to enhance their useful activities and prevent those which are harmful.
Microbiology is the basis for the exciting and expanding field of biotechnology, which endeavors to utilize living organisms to solve important problems in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science. Microbes live in a great variety of environments and carrying out many of the biochemical processes found in higher organisms. They are thus interesting in their own right and as model systems for the study of reactions that occur in higher organisms. As subjects for research in biochemical and molecular genetics, microbes have contributed most to the current knowledge of genetics at the molecular level (microbial systems are at the forefront of genetic engineering).

  • Bacteria can be classified by general morphology. Characteristic cell shape and size help to name and differentiate microorganisms. There are five types of bacterial cells: Cocci, Bacilli, Coccobacilli, Fusiform, and Spirilla. Cocci bacterium are spherical or oval shape. The cocci can occur in pairs (diplococci), chains (streptococci), and irregular clusters (staphylococci). The entire bacterial cell is very small, about the size of an eukaryotic mitochondria. The second type, bacilli, are rod shaped. Coccibacilli are very short rods that can easily be mistaken for cocci. Fusiform are rod-shaped bacteria that have tapered ends (like an American football). Spirilla are spiral shaped. If the spirilla is spiral shaped and the cell is more flexible it is called a spirochete.

    Dear Prospective Graduate Student: Welcome to the Graduate Program in Microbiology at the University of California, Riverside! Our unique program spans the entire spectrum of modern Microbiology research. Students can choose from four state-of-the-art training areas: Microbial Pathogenesis; Environmental Microbiology and Ecology; Microbial Evolution, Genomics and Metagenomics; and Molecular and Cellular Microbiology. We have a very diverse program, with faculty from the departments of Biology, Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Entomology, Environmental Sciences, Plant Pathology and Microbiology, and the Division of Biomedical Sciences. Microbiology program faculty are committed not only to research excellence, but also to their roles as teachers and mentors to graduate students.     Definition of Microbiology
    Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, which are unicellular or cell-cluster microscopic organisms. This includes eukaryotes such as fungi and protists and prokaryotes such as bacteria and certain algae. Viruses are also included. Microbiology subdivided into divisions including bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology and others. A scientist who specializes in the area of microbiology is called a microbiologist. Microbiology can be divided into several subdisciplines, including:
    • Microbial physiology: The study of how the microbial cell functions biochemically. Includes the study of microbial growth, microbial metabolism and microbial cell structure. Microbial genetics: The study of how genes are organised and regulated in microbes in relation to their cellular functions. Closely related to the field of molecular biology. Molecular Microbiology: The study of the molecular biology and genomics of microorganisms.

    Broccoli and Its Nutritional Value Broccoli is a high fiber and cruciferous vegetable which is also known as super food [3,4]. Its green florets produce sulforaphan, a compound which is highly heat stable and potent anticancer agent [1]. Misconceptions It is believed that there are enzymes present which are responsible for production of sulforaphan in Broccoli. So, they should be inactivated during cooking and result should be in no production of given compound. But experiments proved that it was a misconception [2]. Broccoli and Its Medicinal Application During a research at University of Illinois, Elizabeth Jeffery, professor of Human Nutrition found that lower gut microbial flora was actively releasing sulforaphan from broccoli and absorbing [1,2]. Experiment was performed using rat as test animal and work was published in Journal of Food and Function [5]. Elizabeth believe using probiotics with prebiotics (broccoli) enhance proliferation of microbes occur. So taking broccoli with yogurt can prove to be a good choice [2,4]. It will help to increase the activity of both broccoli as well as colon inhabiting bacteria against cancer cells [1]. Scope of Study The importance of above mentioned study is that the intestinal region examined was strikingly similar with human colon which indicated our system will work similar way [6]. Broccoli is already believed to be effective against colon, breast and prostate cancer [3,5]. Studies earlier in 2010 at University of Michigan has proved that concentrated doses of sulforaphan are effective for treatment of breast cancer [6].

    The Department of Microbiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been consistently ranked as one of the best microbiology departments in the United States. There are 21 research laboratories, approximately 80 graduate students, and 20 post-doctoral fellows in the department. Thus, it is large enough to provide a stimulating research environment but small enough to allow close interactions between the faculty and graduate students.
    The Department of Microbiology is a part of the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB), which includes the Departments of Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology, and Molecular and Integrative Physiology. The department is part of an umbrella program in MCB that encompasses 80 different research laboratories. Students admitted into any of these departmental graduate programs can select faculty thesis advisors from over 60 active research laboratories in the school. Close ties are also maintained with the School of Integrative Biology, the School of Chemical Sciences, the College of Medicine, and the College of Veterinary Medicine.

    July/August 1997 Newsletter Vol. 23, No. 4. Most cultivated soils of the Great Plains have been tilled for 50 to 100 years. During this time, prairie soils have undergone major changes. Degradation of prairie soil occurs through erosion, loss of organic matter, salinization, and acidification. Soil erosion after cultivation has two causes, wind and water. As a result, organic matter, primarily carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), declines affecting soil productivity. In undisturbed ecosystems, the amount of carbon entering and leaving the soil is in balance. Cultivation can reduce soil organic matter and organic N concentrations 25% to 60%, with corresponding decreases in nitrification rates and quantity of organic N nitrified. The type of cropping system also influences the rate of organic C and N loss. Cultivation also changes the soil environment affecting the number and kinds of soil organisms. Clearing forested or grassland areas for cultivation drastically alters the soil environment. First, the quantity and quality of plant residues (food for soil organisms) is significantly reduced. Second, the number of species of higher plants is reduced. Monoculture or even common crop rotations provide a much narrower range of plant materials than forests and grasslands. Generally, agricultural practices such as monoculture and pesticide application also contribute to a general reduction of species diversity and total organism population. However, some agricultural practices positively effect soil microbiological activity. For example, the application of organic fertilizers such as manure or compost increases microbe activity.
