Cellular microbiology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Salmonella bacteria (red) invade cultured human cells Cellular microbiology is a discipline that bridges microbiology and cell biology The term "cellular microbiology" was coined in in a Science article. Cooperation and mutual dependency between microbiology and cell biology had been increasing in the years before that, and the emergence of a new discipline had been suggested and discussed in several scientific conferences. Cellular microbiology attempts to use pathogenic microbes as tools for cell-biology research, and to employ cell-biology methods to understand the pathogenicity of microbes. Toxins and virulence factors from microbes have been used for decades to influence processes in eukaryotic cells and to study them. It has increasingly appeared that applying a purified toxin on a cell does not always provide the complete picture, and that understanding the role of the toxin in pathogenicity, the way the toxin promotes the microbe, the way the toxin is produced and the co-evolution of the toxin and its host-cell counterparts, is crucial.

Consulting soil scientists' involvement in bioremediation, wetland treatment, land application of wastewater, and septic systems hinges on an undestanding of soil microbilogical transformations. Glomalin, and Terra Preta/biochar, two of the most interesting recent developments in soil science, are microbiological in nature. NSCSS members' favorite links:

Iowa State University offers degrees in microbiology at both the graduate (M.S., Ph.D.) and undergraduate (B.S.) level. The involvement of professors from across Iowa State University in the Interdepartmental Microbiology Programs reflects the richness and diversity of the microbiologists at the university and in the Ames area. The mission of the Undergraduate educational program in Microbiology is to expose students to the diversity of the microbial world and to provide the theoretical and laboratory education needed to contribute in their chosen field. The Undergraduate Program will provide students with education in the basic sciences which are essential to microbiology and to the application of science to issues in the modern world. Upon completion of a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, students should be prepared to enter into the professional community as a microbiologist, or to pursue an advanced degree. Global Nitrogen Enrichment (GANE)
Every organism needs nitrogen, but most can't use the abundant nitrogen gas in air. A few organisms 'fix' nitrogen into a form others can use. They have kept our ecosystems functioning for hundreds of millions of years.
    • But humankind adds extra 'fixed' nitrogen to crops as fertilizer. Our livestock release ammonia to the air, and manure releases nitrogen into freshwaters. Our industries and vehicles emit massive amounts of nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, which are later deposited back on the land and oceans in forms that plants can use.
These processes have doubled the amount of fixed, biologically active nitrogen in global circulation, with enormous consequences for natural ecosystems. More about the GANE programme
