In 1665, Robert Hooke saw that cork was made up of little cubes that he named cells . Later Anton van Leeuwenhoek made the important connection that cells are living things when he saw through his early microscope small one celled organisms. Later Christian Ehrenberg found that protista or bacteria were different kinds of cells. In the late part of the 1800s

Environmental Microbiology
Modern society introduces a variety of contaminating chemicals to surface soils through chemical pest management, manure application, and deposition of biosolids from wastewater treatment plants. Many of these contaminants are degraded slowly or incompletely in the environment, and may therefore diffuse to surface waters or leach to lower soil horizons, and ultimately contaminate aquifers. As a result, soil contamination, e.g. by pesticides, hydrocarbons, and veterinary as well as human pharmaceuticals is creating a legitimate concern in the public: Are residential soils safe? Can agricultural soils continue to generate safe crops for human consumption? Will the underlying aquifers continue to provide safe drinking waters?
It is becoming increasingly clear that microbiological transformations are typically more significant (in both extent and rate of reaction) than chemically or physically induced transformations of contaminants in the environment. Most importantly, it is the intricate interactions between available compounds and available degrader organisms that determine whether the contaminant will be transformed by the microorganisms or remain a long-lived concern in production of crops or drinking water.

Through the REU program, undergraduates from schools in Georgia and throughout the United States and Puerto Rico have worked side-by-side with UGA graduate students and faculty mentors to complete 9-week research projects. Each year, participants have presented their findings in a public poster session, which has become an end-of-summer focal point for the entire department. In addition, REU students have participated in lab meetings and journal clubs, attended departmental seminars, and completed a short course in scientific ethics, while also experiencing the social camaraderie of the Department and enjoying the atmosphere of UGA and Athens. Some highlights of the program include:

Microbiology
Microbiology is a fundamental biological science concerned with bacteria, viruses and other microbes. Some of the most important scientific discoveries have been made by microbiologists. Since 1910, approximately one- third of the Nobel Prizes in medicine and physiology have been awarded to microbiologists. The discipline covers a wide spectrum of specialized interest areas that show how microbes affect human and animal health, our environment, food technology and safety, and the biotechnology industry. Microbiology prepares students for a wide range of important career opportunities.
The Program
In recent years, the field of microbiology has had a major impact upon virtually all other scientific disciplines. For this reason, students who choose to major in microbiology often minor in biotechnology, chemistry and food safety. Students who choose to major in other fields may find it advantageous to minor in microbiology.
Career Opportunities
A career in microbiology offers many opportunities. The microbiology major is an excellent preparation for professional school (such as veterinary and human medicine) and graduate school due to its emphasis on the pathogenesis of infectious disease, molecular biology, sterile techniques and laboratory skills. Graduates also may seek employment in the health sciences, biomedical industries, biotechnology, agricultural biosystems, food industries, pharmaceutical industries and government agencies. In these careers graduates may identify new emerging diseases; develop diagnostic tests, new medicines and vaccines; work in departments of public health or hospital laboratories to diagnose diseases; insure a safe food supply; or work in academic or private research laboratories. Microbiologists work in government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency. Many microbiologists are teachers and professors.

ug-enquiries@surrey.ac.uk "I chose Surrey for the modular programme which provides the flexibility to choose subjects you're particularly interested in..." Eleanor Tyler Microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Microbiology degrees offer the opportunity to study microbes at a cellular level and learn about their interactions with higher organisms, including the way in which microbes cause disease, the spread of infections through a population, and strategies for preventing and treating diseases caused by microbes. Biotechnology is the study of the systems that govern gene expression and metabolic pathways, and how manipulation of these systems can be applied to the use of microbes as 'cell factories' to make gene therapies, replace missing components in defective cells, and synthesise therapeutic drugs from by-products of microbial metabolism.
The Microbiology and Biotechnology degree programmes will enter you into an exciting field of science that is progressing rapidly. As such, these degree programmes benefit from a strong emphasis on laboratory-based practical work, and modules that focus on the cutting-edge aspects of this area of science.
