Welcome to the Homepage of the European Journal of Mineralogy
    News
February 6th, 2009 During the past year - actually the twentieth year of existence of the EJM - readers and especially authors have witnessed that the changes announced in last year's editorial have become a reality.
    Early online publication
    Free colour figures
In order to make full use of online publication, figures submitted as colour files by the authors now appear as colour figures in the online version of EJM, free of charge. In order to encourage authors to have these figures printed in colour as well, the authors' contribution to colour printing has been substantially reduced (now EUR 200 for the first figure, and EUR 50 for each additional one). This promotional trial period was so successful that it will most likely be extended for another year.
    Free pages
In the same spirit, the number of article pages that are printed free of charge for the author has been raised from 10 to 12, thereby making life easier for petrologists.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. This specimen is from Ontario, Canada and is displayed in the collections of the Natural History Museum. We study minerals in order to understand processes which occur in the natural environment. These processes include pollutant dispersion, the formation of valuable natural resources, such as ores, the tectonic processes which have shaped the Earth, and the processes which gave rise to the planets as the Solar System formed. Chemical, physical and, in some instances, biological, particularly microbiological, interactions are involved in these processes. Minerals are naturally occurring chemical compounds. They make up rocks, meteorites and, with organic matter, soils. About 4,000 mineral species are known and 50 or so new ones are identified each year. We contribute to identifying new minerals and to understanding how the composition, structure and properties of minerals are inter-related, and we use this knowledge when studying natural processes.

Quartz occurs throughout the mine and is a common cavity lining.  Quartz also frequently forms both pseudomorph of hemimorphite and epimorphs of several other minerals including calcite, descloizite, hemimorphite, cerussite, and possibly smithsonite and polybasite.  Quartz is also found in epitactic growth with hemimorphite; the Summit is one of the localities in the world where such a relationship is known to occur. Mineralogy and Crystallography Books
    Introduction
From the invention of movable type printing by Gutenberg around 1450, till the beginning of the x-ray diffraction era in 1912, thousands of books covering the areas of mineralogy and crystallography have been published. The purpose of the book collection of the Virtual Museum is to give an overview of important, influential as well as attractive and desirable works that were issued in that period.
We do not show ideal copies, but real books that are described as they are.
The book collection in the Virtual Museum is arranged by the name of the author in alphabetical order followed by the year of publication (with "nd" for: no date) and the title. In the individual descriptions of each book, the title page is represented in quasi-facsimile fashion as accurately as possible. Line endings are indicated by a vertical stroke. The same convention holds for the half-title. The collation includes the number of volumes (explicitly given when there is more than a single volume), the format (folio, quarto, octavo,..), the collational formula, the pagination and the number of plates or folding tables.
