Please introduce links to this page from related articles suggestions are available (March 2010) Early writing on mineralogy, especially on gemstones, comes from ancient Babylonia , the ancient Greco-Roman world, ancient and medieval China , and Sanskrit texts from ancient India Books on the subject included the Naturalis Historia of Pliny the Elder which not only described many different minerals but also explained many of their properties. The German Renaissance specialist Georgius Agricola wrote works such as De re metallica On Metals , 1556) and De Natura Fossilium On the Nature of Rocks , 1546) which begin the scientific approach to the subject. Systematic scientific studies of minerals and rocks developed in post- Renaissance Europe. The modern study of mineralogy was founded on the principles of crystallography and microscopic study of rock sections with the invention of the microscope in the 17th century.

E NTIRE BOOKS have been written on quartz and its many varieties. Here we'll only discuss the properties of crystalline quartz and end with a list of what we know about Arkansas quartz vein formation in the Ouachita Mountains.
Although quartz has a unique structure, so do many other minerals. That in combination with the chemistry is what makes a mineral a mineral.
We will begin with some basics: To meet the definition of a mineral, quartz must be composed of an orderly arrangement of certain elements, so that we may describe its internal structure and present its chemistry by a representative formula: SiO
Here is a hand-sized piece of metallic silicon. This metal combined with oxygen makes quartz crystals: silicon dioxide. Isn't chemistry amazing? Any mineralogist would agree with me when I say that quartz is the most diverse species in terms of varieties, shapes and forms for a single mineral species. The feldspars or the pyroxenes and amphiboles include a whole host of minerals with similar structural characteristics, but variable chemistry. Quartz certainly has the most COLLECTABLE varieties of any single species. Silica
Alpha and beta quartz

Now most of these numbers won't mean anything to you unless you try to figure how the world was made. But some people do, so here's a little more. Crystalline quartz may be described as alpha-quartz (low quartz) or beta-quartz (high quartz). Alpha-quartz forms at temperatures lower than 573

Lead vanadate forms Vanadinite, discovered in Mexico
Mine: San Carlos (Mina Apex), San Carlos, Manuel Benavides, Chihuahua Mexico
Vanadinite is an uncommon mineral, only occurring as the result of chemical alterations to a pre-existing material. It is therefore known as a secondary mineral. It is found in arid climates and forms by oxidation of primary lead minerals. Vanadinite is especially found in association with the lead sulfide, galena. Other associated minerals include wulfenite, limonite, and barite.[2][4][5]
It was originally discovered in Mexico by the Spanish mineralogist Andrés Manuel del Río in 1801. He called the mineral "brown lead" and asserted that it contained a new element, which he first named pancromium and later, erythronium. However, he was later led to believe that this was not a new element but merely an impure form of chromium. In 1830, Nils Gabriel Sefström discovered a new element, which he named vanadium. It was later revealed that this was identical to the metal discovered earlier by Andrés Manuel del Río. Del Río's "brown lead" was also rediscovered, in 1838 in Zimapan, Hidalgo, Mexico, and was named vanadinite due its high vanadium content. Other names that have since been given to vanadinite are johnstonite and lead vanadate.

    The Art of Prospecting
Civilizations both now and in the ancient past were successful in large measure by their access to and familiarity with the uses of metals. There are many dystopians today who reject the search and exploitation of mineral resources as being counter to the long term interests of the health of the planet. But interestingly, these people tend to live in advanced societies which are typified by their extensive use of minerals and metals. Driving to the nearest airport to board modern jetliners, they fly to Third World nations in order to protest the expansion of the minerals industry . The irony apparently escapes them. This sounds like bitter sarcasm - mostly because it is. I have confronted one too many young idealists with non-participating brains who are happy to trap others in a cycle of poverty which they have never known. Check the price of silver gold prospecting and mining
    • Prospecting and prospectors represent the blitzkrieg and shock troops of the mining industry. This is step one in the very risky business of spending money in hopes of finding a mine. Someone has calculated that the likelihood of a claim becoming a productive mine is 1 in 10,000. Development of a

Crystallography and Minerals Arranged by Crystal Form The Crystallography section in the Mineralogy Database is moving to a new, permanent domain. Please make sure to bookmark the new location at http://webmineral.com/crystall.shtml Crystal Groups and Classes - Crystallography groups are composed of 32 classes of symmetry derived from observations of the external crystal form. From these 32 classes, 230 space groups (see Crystallography 101 ) are distinguishable using x-ray analysis. For additional information on crystal systems, please review an excellent on-line treatment of this subject, the Introduction to Crystallography and Mineral Crystal Systems by Mike and Darcy Howard. Example Crystal Morphology - To further illustrate these symmetry elements, the example crystalline forms for each symmetry class were constructed using Faces (version 3.5) by Georges Favreau for older browsers and a JAVA language program called JCrystal by Steffen Weber for the java-capable browsers. The example crystals in each group and class were constructed using the following parameters: Crystallographic axes: a=1, b=1, c=1.
