Mollusca
mollusca (Science: zoology) One of the grand divisions of the animal kingdom , including the classes Cephalopoda, gastropoda , PteropodaScaphopoda, and lamellibranchiata , or Conchifera. These animals have an unsegmented bilateral body , with most of the organs and parts paired , but not repeated longitudinally. Most of them develop a mantle , which incloses either a branchial or a pulmonary cavity . They are generally more or less covered and protected by a calcareous shell , which may be univalve bivalve , or multivalve Formerly the brachiopoda , Bryzoa, and tunicata were united with the lamellibranchiata in an artificial group called acephala , which was also included under Mollusca. See Molluscoudea.

Dear Alice, I read the info on molluscum in the Men's Health section. Are there any signs that distinguish molluscum from genital warts/any way to tell if you have one or the other? Dear Reader, Bothersome bumps! Even the essentially harmless (yet still contagious) molluscum can provoke anxiety among it's human host when it inhabits the genital region. To answer your question, yes, there is a way to tell molluscum contagiosum from genital warts. Molluscum are skin bumps caused by a pox virus, and they have some distinguishing characteristics health care professionals use for diagnosis. These include:
  • Size: The bumps are typically small (2 to 5 millimeters across) and do not grow or swell Color: Usually mollusca are smooth, pearl-like, flesh colored bumps Location: Mollusca may appear singly or in groups and are usually found on the face, neck, chest, stomach, and groin area
These characteristics are different from genital warts in the following ways:
  • Genital warts grow on or around the internal or external genitals (i.e., on or around the anus or penis and/or in or around the vagina), are rough textured and "warty" looking, and, if left untreated, can grow much larger and form masses that look similar to cauliflower.

Mollusca
The phylum mollusca is the second most diverse animal phylum with over 50,000 living species and mostly.
The mantle produces the shell. The advantage of a shell is to protect the creature and offer a portable home. It also has the disadvantage of taking more energy to move around. Whereas many mollusca have well-developed shells (snails, limpets etc.) while other have reduced shells (squid and some sea slugs) or no shell at all (octopuses).
The advantage of having a reduced shell, or no shell at all, can be the animal's speed and its ability to get into small cracks and holes because of its size.
Most mollusca have an open circulatory system expect for the class of cephalapode. This system is complete with a heart, blood vessels, and respiratory pigments. Gas exchange is via gills, lungs, or the body surface. Excretion takes place by means of kidneys that, like the digestive tract, pump waste into the mantle cavity. The disadvantage of an open circulatory system is in directing where the blood goes but an advantage is the organs are always covered by blood where blood empties into sinuses.
Most mollusca's have a radula. This is a toothed tongue-like organ used for feeding and defense.

Introduction
The mollusks are a large and diverse group of soft-bodied unsegmented animals. Nearly 130,000 recent species are known, and some 35,000 fossil species (these latter are without doubt only a small fraction of those that have ever lived). They include many familiar animals, like snails clams squid, octopods , etc, as well as others not so well known. They range in size from microscopic forms to the giant squid ( Architeuthis ), and have a long and venerable history appearing during earliest Cambrian time, if not before.

Mollusca
Latin molluscus = soft Soft bodied animals with a hard external shell (mussels, winkles, snails), or an internal shell (sea hares, cuttlefish) or have lost their shell in the course of evolution (nudibranchs). Molluscs have a mantle that secretes the calcium carbonate that makes up the shell. They inhabit numerous different environments with a large number living in the sea. Octopuses and squids have evolved to intelligent mobile forms with complex behaviour.

Molluscs - Phylum Mollusca. zSB(3,3) Molluscs (Phylum Mollusca) are invertebrates that include animals such as squid, octopuses, cuttlefish, nudibranchs, snails, slugs, limpets, sea hares, mussels, clams, oysters, scallops, as well as many lesser known creatures. There are an estimated 100,000 species of molluscs making them second largest phylum in the animal kingdom, having fewer species than only the Phylum Arthropoda Molluscs have soft bodies that consist of three basic parts, a foot, a visceral mass, and a mantle. Because molluscs are very diverse and come in many different shapes and sizes it is difficult to make too many generalizations about the group's anatomical structure beyond these three basic parts. The foot functions in locomotion and in molluscs that posses a shell, the foot can often be drawn inside. The visceral mass, located above the foot, contains the digestive system, the heart, and other internal organs. Finally, the mantle is a layer of tissue that covers the visceral mass and in many molluscs it contains glands which secrete a hard shell.
