Alabama ranks first, or second only to Tennessee, in the diversity and number of its mollusk species. In fact, some species are endemic to (only found in) Alabama, or Alabama and a bordering state. Some of this diversity can be attributed to the variety of ecosystems found in Alabama's beautiful land formations, river systems and coastline. Another factor contributing to this diversity may be the fact that during the ice age, glaciers did not cover Alabama killing the mollusks. Alabama's coastline may be small in comparison to other Gulf Coast states, but over five hundred species of marine mollusks have been found in the coastal sand and waters of Alabama. Visitors to Alabama's beaches may not always see evidence of this variety, but a walk on the beach after a heavy storm or hurricane will usually yield shells which have been washed ashore from deeper waters. In fact, one of these deeper water speciesJohnstone's Junonia ( Scaphella junonia johnstoneae Clench, 1953)was chosen as Alabama's State Shell in 1990. This shell was named in honor of Kathleen Yerger Johnstone, an amateur conchologist who lived in Mobile.

) is a viral infection of the skin or occasionally of the mucous membranes . It is caused by a DNA poxvirus called the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). MCV has no animal reservoir , infecting only humans. There are four types of MCV, MCV-1 to -4; MCV-1 is the most prevalent and MCV-2 is seen usually in adults and often sexually transmitted. This common viral disease has a higher incidence in children, sexually active adults, and those who are immunodeficient, and the infection is most common in children aged one to ten years old. MC can affect any area of the skin but is most common on the trunk of the body, arms, and legs. It is spread through direct contact or shared items such as clothing or towels. The virus commonly spreads through skin-to-skin contact. This includes sexual contact or touching or scratching the bumps and then touching the skin. Handling objects that have the virus on them (

Harold "Dave" Dyer Mollusks of the Southwest and the Colorado Plateau Kartchner Caverns Modern Mollusk Data Curriculum Vitae Mollusk Data Non-Marine Mollusk Links Current Research Kartchner Caverns Mollusks I am currently working on gathering data on the modern mollusks in the region of Kartchner Caverns. These data will be used to compare and contrast with the fossil mollusks recovered from the caverns. This comparison will provide evidence for a changing environment over time. These data will be compiled with fossil and modern mollusks from other locations to create a regional perspective of changes to the molluscan community mosaic during the last 40,000 years. The dataset can be used for comparison to other regions of the Southwest and the Colorado Plateau. Two days were spent at Kartchner Caverns in March, 2004. The purpose of the visit was to collect modern mollusks from the most likely source of inflow to the caverns. A total of 4 transects were completed in Guindani Canyon collecting across the stream channel up gradient. These samples will be analyzed and correlated with samples previously collected in the immediate vicinity of the caverns. The data will be compared with the fossil assemblage recovered from within the caverns to try to determine the paleoenvironment indicated by the fossil mollusk assemblage and the modern environment.

Taxonomic subdivisions The Pulmonata , or "pulmonates," are an informal group (previously an order , and before that a subclass ) of snails and slugs characterized by the ability to breathe air, by virtue of having a pallial lung instead of a gill , or gills. The group includes many land and freshwater families, and several marine families. Pulmonata are known from the Carboniferous to the recent periods. Pulmonates have a single auricle and kidney, and a concentrated, symmetrical, nervous system. The mantle cavity is located on the right side of the body, and lacks gills , instead being converted into a vascularised lung. Most species have a shell, but no operculum , although the group does also include several shell-less slugs. Pulmonates are hermaphroditic , and some groups possess love darts

In recent times, the land snails have been kept as pets; however, they are illegal to possess in some countries including the United States . The snails are easy to keep and when bred in captivity are unlikely to carry parasites.

    http://fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/leopard_slug.htm
Leopard Slug Limax maximus Shetland Biological Records Centre Leopard Slugs were introduced to America, but are now common. They grow to four inches. They are usually grayish yellow with black spots or bands. Often they are wrinkled. Leopard Slugs have four tentacles on their head; two long ones and two short ones. Leopard Slugs live in fields, woods, and gardens. They prefer damp, shady places. In daylight, you can find them under rocks, logs, and similar places. These slugs are mostly nocturnal , but will sometimes come out on rainy days. Naturhistoriska museet Courtesty of the Royal British Columbia Museum, Photographer: Philip Lambert Leopard Slugs have interesting mating habits. First, they will circle each other, before intertwining their bodies. They do this from a tree branch or near an edge. Next, the two slugs will fall from the branch and hang, suspended by mucus slime. After mating, since slugs are hermaphroditic , both slugs will be able to lay eggs.
