Edible Mycorrhizal Mushrooms The world market of edible mycorrhizal mushrooms has been estimated at 3-6 billion USD. Still, only limited research has been done. In order to facilitate research and cooperation, it was decided at the Berkeley meeting in 1996 that Eric Danell should make webpages covering researchers focused on these organisms. At the Uppsala meeting in July 1998 it was decided to expand the web pages and to divide the web sites of specific genera among the delegates: If you are a scientist currently working with the genera above, please contact the people in charge of the genus web page and give them name, addresses, links and a sentence describing your interests. If you wish to be in charge of a new genus web page not mentioned above please contact Eric Danell During this transition stage when new web pages are being made, please consult the original links below:

Mycorrhizas and Symbiosis
by M. Halit Umar Summary The term 'symbiosis' indicates the general concept of living together which has a wide range of applicability in biology. We find symbiosis at both the macro- and microscopical size. As a process, it brings about mutual benefit to the host and symbiont. Mycorrhizas are examples of a very important cooperation between growing plant roots and the so-called mycorrhizal fungi, whereas rhizobial nodules are examples of an equally important cooperation between plant roots and nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Not surprisingly, both mycorrhizas and rhizobia can be found around the tiny roots below the soil surface. Careful exposure of a plant's root system will suffice to reveal such macroscopical symbiotic structures to the naked eye. Encyclopaedia Britannica defines symbiosis as: any of several living arrangements between members of two different species, including mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism . So, both beneficial and harmful associations are included by definition in the term 'symbiosis'.

Address: Simmons C, Univ Guyana, Guyana Natl Herbarium, POB 10-1110, Greater Georgetown, Guyana Six species of Amanita (Amanitaceae, Basidiomycota, Fungi), collected in the Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana, are described; four as new and two as new records for Guyana: A. aurantiobrunnea Spec. nov., A. calochroa Spec. nov., A. cyanopus Spec. nov., A. perphaea Spec. nov., A. lanivolva Bas, and A. xerocybe Bas. All six species have been collected in forests dominated by Dicymbe (Caesalpiniaceae) and are assumed to be ectomycorrhizal. Amanita perphaea is commonly eaten by Patamona Indians and is called 'Pulutukwe'. Home International Mycorrhiza Society Directory of Mycorrhizologists Listserve ... Contact

Rogers (1928) Rhizanthella gardneri , also known as Western Underground Orchid , was discovered in the spring of 1928 in the wheatbelt of Western Australia Jack Trott had bent to investigate an odd crack that had appeared in his garden's soil, and had noticed a sweet smell that arose from the ground. Scraping away the soil, he soon uncovered a tiny white flower, about half an inch across, growing underground. What he had found was an entirely new type of orchid The white leafless plant is made up of a tube which produces a flowerhead. Unlike any other orchid in Australia, the Western Australian underground orchid remains completely underground for its whole life. Not being able to obtain the sun's energy, it instead feeds on the broom honey myrtle , a shrub. It is linked to it by a
