Note: We will be continually updating this page as more information is made available. The USGS continues to mobilize equipment and personnel to gather scientific data and information on the environmental impacts of the oil spill to affected coastal habitats. USGS scientists will be:
  • Collecting satellite imagery to assess the impact on wetlands and coasts Developing maps showing NOAA projections of spill trajectory with respect to DOI Lands Collecting samples to ascertain source and levels of toxicity to soils and water systems Conducting tests to determine cause of mortality of wildlife Developing models that depict how local tidal and current conditions will interact with seafloor bathymetry to carry oil over barrier islands Providing decision support tools to help DOI land managers mitigate the effects of the oil spill and assist in restoration efforts

In 2006, the world consumed more than 3.5 billion gallons of oil each day [source: U.S. Dept. of Energy ]. Sixty percent of that oil reached its destination by sea [source: Corn ]. Fortunately, due to stricter penalties and better ship design, the number of oil spills has decreased since the oil shipping boom began in the 1960s. Unfortunately, they haven't been eliminated. Between 1990 and 1999, an average of 150,000 tons of oil spilled each year into the world's waterways [source: National Academies ]. 2001 was a particularly bad year, with five spills occurring within the same week [source:

    Oil spills
Crude oil or petroleum is an important fossil fuel. Fossil fuels were formed millions of years ago, when much of Earth was covered by water containing billions of tiny plants and animals. After these organisms died they accumulated on ocean floors, where, over the ages, sand and mud also drifted down to cover them. As these layers piled up over millions of years, their weight created pressure and heat that changed the decaying organic material into oil and gas. Since petroleum is often extracted in places that are far away from areas where it is refined and eventually used, it must be transported in A bird soaked in oil that was spilled into the Persian Gulf in 1991 during the Persian Gulf War. (Reproduced by permission of Photo Researchers, Inc. large quantities by ocean tankers, inland-water barges, or overland pipelines. Accidental oil spills can occur at any time during the loading, transportation, and unloading of oil. Some oil spills have been spectacular in magnitude and have caused untold environmental damage.
    Bioremediation
Bioremediation is the use of bacteria and other living microorganisms to help clean up hazardous waste in soil and water. These microorganisms work by decomposing or breaking down toxic chemicals into simpler, less-poisonous compounds. Petroleum can be consumed by microorganisms, transforming it into compounds such as carbon dioxide and water.

Technology has far too many advantages to enumerate, but one overwhelming disadvantage is the potential for industrial and chemical accidents.
    http://lifesci.rutgers.edu/~burger/oilbook.htm
OIL SPILLS by J. Burger , Rutgers University Press (1997) Technology has far too many advantages to enumerate, but one overwhelming disadvantage is the potential for industrial and chemical accidents. Oil spills are among the most ruinous and are getting worse and worse as supertankers increase in size, and as world transport routes increase in complexity. To supertanker, transfer, well, and pipeline accidents has been added the horror of intentional bombing of tankers and the setting afire of hundreds of oil wells in the wake of military retreat, as happened during the Gulf War. Oil spills, however, differ dramatically from many other types of industrial accidents, such as chemical spills, Bhopal, Three Mile Island, and Chernobyl. Except for the crews aboard ships who are almost always rescued, there are few human fatalities. Our fear of oil spill accidents is much less, but the potential for damage to the environment, however, is very great. Most books on oil spills either focus on one gigantic spill that captured our attention, such as the Exxon Valdez , or deal with particular aspects of spill clean-up, tanker safety, or the difficulties of arctic or offshore drilling activities. Others are very technical, providing comprehensive details on supertanker construction, shipping lanes, or oil refineries.

    How Dispersants work

The petroleum industry's safety record of handling oil and its products in Australia has been excellent and has been maintained throughout the last two decades of rapidly increasing volumes produced and transported in national waters. Oil spills from offshore production have been insignificant and, while there have been some spills arising from shipping accidents, none has had a lasting adverse impact on the marine environment.
Nevertheless the Australian oil industry, aware of a concern about the possible impact of oil spills on the marine environment, has stepped up its efforts to protect the ecosystems surrounding its operations. Defence against potential marine pollution is a combination of prevention and cure. In addition to the introduction of more rigorous inspections and safeguards on all its installations and tanker fleets, the industry has established, one of the best equipped marine oil spill response and training centres in the world. Sources of the oil in the sea The risks and responsibilities associated with oil in the sea should be put in their true perspective.
