The talk page may contain suggestions. (February 2010) Operational research , also known as operations research , is an interdisciplinary mathematical science that focuses on the effective use Employing techniques from other mathematical sciences - such as mathematical modeling statistical analysis , and mathematical optimization - operations research arrives at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. Because of its emphasis on human-technology interaction and because of its focus on practical applications, operations research has overlap with other disciplines, notably industrial engineering and management science , and draws on psychology and organization science . Operations Research is often concerned with determining the maximum (of profit, performance, or yield) or minimum (of loss, risk, or cost) of some real-world objective. Originating in military efforts before World War II, its techniques have grown to concern problems in a variety of industries.

Operations research in context
The terms operations research and management science are often used synonymously. When a distinction is drawn, management science generally implies a closer relationship to the problems of business management Operations research also closely relates to industrial engineering . Industrial engineering takes more of an engineering point of view, and industrial engineers typically consider OR techniques to be a major part of their toolset. Some of the primary tools used by operations researchers are statistics optimization stochastics queueing theory ... graph theory , and simulation . Because of the computational nature of these fields OR also has ties to computer science , and operations researchers regularly use custom-written or off-the-shelf software Operations research is distinguished by its ability to look at and improve an entire system , rather than concentrating only on specific elements (though this is often done as well). An operations researcher faced with a new problem is expected to determine which techniques are most appropriate given the nature of the system, the goals for improvement, and constraints on time and computing power. For this and other reasons, the human element of OR is vital. Like any tools, OR techniques cannot solve problems by themselves.

Operations Research
From Wikibooks, the open-content textbooks collection Jump to: navigation search Operations research or operational research (OR) is an interdisciplinary branch of mathematics which uses methods like mathematical modeling, statistics, and algorithms to arrive at optimal or good decisions in complex problems which are concerned with optimizing the maxima (profit, faster assembly line, greater crop yield, higher bandwidth, etc) or minima (cost loss, lowering of risk, etc) of some objective function. The eventual intention behind using operations research is to elicit a best possible solution to a problem mathematically, which improves or optimizes the performance of the system. This book is intended for both mathematics students and also for those interested in the subject from a management point of view.

    Operations Research
Within the Division of Economics and Business, the graduate programs in Mineral and Energy Economics and Engineering and Technology Management offer students the ability to specialize in Operations Research and Operations Management. Students study leading-edge business concepts and industry best practices. This specialization has a particular emphasis on the importance of technology and its management through real-world approaches to operations research. Operations Research: The Science of Better This is the official slogan of the Operations Research/Management Sciences profession as adopted during the 2003 National Conference of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS). Why is Operations Research considered by those "in the know" to be the "science of better"? Operations Research focuses on applying mathematics to the management of complex systems. Practitioners of Operations Research excel at modeling complex real-world problems using mathematics, developing solution techniques for these problems, and analyzing the results to gain insights for decision-making. Mathematical models developed by practitioners of Operations Research are firmly rooted in and are consistent with underlying physical, psychological, and organizational principles applicable to the problem. Operations Research models facilitate decision-making for investment or consumption decisions made by individuals, strategic or operating decisions made by firms, or policy decisions made by institutions or governments.

Today, a colleague of mine sent me a link to a news article entitled Tiny Brained Bees Solve a Complex Mathematical Problem , which appeared on the Queen Mary, University of London web site and on the Guardian web site Scientists at Queen Mary, University of London and Royal Holloway, University of London have discovered that bees learn to fly the shortest possible route between flowers even if they discover the flowers in a different order. Bees are effectively solving the Travelling Salesman Problem, and these are the first animals found to do this. Incorrect Statement 1: that we can solve today. OR is about being much smarter than simply enumerating all the possible solutions to a problem. Incorrect Statement 2: Wrong again! • Candidates should have strong quantitative and computer skills; employers prefer workers who have completed advanced math courses. Employment is projected to grow much faster than average. Individuals with a master's or Ph.D. degree in operations research or management science should have excellent employment prospects; some entry-level positions are available to those with a bachelor’s degree.
Nature of the Work About this section
Operations research analysts formulate and apply mathematical modeling methods to develop and interpret information that assists management with policy formulation and other managerial functions. Using analytical techniques, operations research analysts help managers to make better decisions and solve problems. The procedures of operations research were first formalized by the military. They have been used in wartime to effectively deploy radar, search for enemy submarines, and get supplies to where they are most needed. In peacetime and in private enterprises, operations research is used in planning business ventures and analyzing options by using statistical analysis, data mining, simulation, computer modeling, linear programming, and other mathematical techniques.

    What is Operations Research?
Operations Research ( OR ) is the use of scientific methodology to study systems whose design or operation require human decision making. OR provides the means for making the most effective decisions about systems design and operation. The strength and versatility of OR stems from its diagnostic power through observation and modeling, as well as from its prescriptive power through analysis and synthesis. OR is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on and contributing to the techniques from many fields, including mathematics and mathematical sciences, engineering, economics and the physical sciences. OR practitioners have successfully solved a wide variety of real-world problems, varying from the optimal design of telecommunications networks in the face of uncertain demand, to the planning for an optimal deployment of armed forces during wartime. Many new applications originate from current societal problems of energy production and distribution, environmental pollution control, health maintenance and software production.
