Operations Research Operations research is a vast branch of mathematics which encompasses many diverse areas of minimization and optimization. Thousands of books have been written worldwide on the subject of operations research. The central objective of operations research is optimization , i.e., "to do things best under the given circumstances." This general concept has great many applications, for instance, in agricultural planning, biotechnology, data analysis, distribution of goods and resources, emergency and rescue operations, engineering systems design, environmental management, financial planning, health care management, inventory control, manpower and resource allocation, manufacturing of goods, military operations, production process control, risk management, sequencing and scheduling of tasks, telecommunications, and traffic control. Closely related disciplines (with significant overlaps among these) include decision analysis, systems analysis, management science, control theory game theory optimization theory , constraint logic programming, artificial intelligence, fuzzy decision-making, multi-criteria analysis, and so on. All these disciplines share the objective of improving a quantitative decision making procedure. The same comment applies to operations research-related business applications such as supply-chain management, enterprise resource planning, total quality management, just-in-time production and inventory management, and materials requirements planning.

The discipline of operations research develops and uses mathematical and computational methods for decision-making. The field revolves around a mathematical core consisting of several fundamental topics including optimization, stochastic systems, simulation, economics and game theory, and network analysis.
The broad applicability of its core topics places operations research at the heart of many important contemporary problems such as communication network management, statistical learning, supply-chain management, pricing and revenue management, financial engineering, market design, bio-informatics, production scheduling, energy and environmental policy, and transportation logistics, to name a few.
Operations research offers a wide variety of career opportunities in industry, public service, and academia applying operations research methods to improve how organizations or engineering systems perform, developing products that leverage operations research tools, consulting, conducting research, or teaching.

No. 2316:
OPERATIONS RESEARCH by Andrew Boyd Click here for audio of Episode 2316 Today, the science of better. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. W hen someone's called an "electrical engineer," we have some idea of what that person does. Same for "philosopher," "economist," "accountant," and most other titles. But what on earth is an "operations researcher?" Few people have even heard of operations research (or OR, as it's often called); yet it could well become the high-demand career of our new century. The truly unfortunate name operations research traces to WW-II. Before the war, systematic mathematical analysis hadn't been applied to the military's operational problems questions like "How to schedule equipment maintenance?" and "Where to deploy airplanes?" As people addressed those problems they were said to be "researching military operations." And a name was born. One application was hunting German U-boats. Allied planes would search out submarines that'd surfaced for air. Then they'd drop depth charges. Math was applied to determine angles of attack for airplanes, and the timing and spacing of those charges. The resulting likelihood of sinking a U-boat, once it was found, rose fourteen-fold from three percent to over forty.

Operations Research
Package for Solving a Broad Range of Problems in Optimization
Operations Research is a Mathematica package for solving problems in linear optimization, quadratic programming, shortest-path tasks, and combinatorial optimization and heuristics. With Operations Research and Mathematica , you can solve a broad range of typical problems encountered in university courses and in daily practical work, and can model and solve optimization problems in a very convenient and interactive manner. Operations Research contains five package files that are called from the master package OperationsResearch.m . The documentation, which is fully compatible with Mathematica 7, includes a large selection of example notebooks, with typical problems that can be solved in Operations Research . The notebook collection serves as a guide to dealing with a broad class of optimization tasks.
