Programs of Study The Operations Research Program at the University of Delaware is an interdisciplinary graduate program, drawing its faculty and students from the following departments: The student is encouraged to select an adviser among the relevant faculty as soon as possible. The director of the program will assist in the search. After the first semester but no later than during the second semester, the student should have an advisor for course selection and thesis/dissertation purposes. Changes in the adviser are possible with special justification, but all concerned including the Director of the Program must agree. The program encourages co-advisers for students if it is in their interest. Master's programs allow students to take either the thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option requires a research-oriented thesis (six credits) and course work about equally divided between OR-related courses, and course offerings in the area of application, for a total of 33 credit hours. A thesis committee consisting of at least four members, two of which are OR faculty, should be formed after the first year of study to advise the candidate and administer the thesis defense exam. One member should be external to the student's home department. The non-thesis option requires an internship and a related research report in lieu of the thesis. Two semesters of seminar attendance is required for all masters students.

    Definition of operations research
Operations Research is the professional discipline that deals with the application of information technology for informed decision-making. Operations research professionals aim to provide rational bases for decision making by seeking to understand and structure complex situations and to use this understanding to predict system behavior and improve system performance. Much of this work is done using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and manipulate mathematical and computer models of organizational systems composed of people, machines, and procedures.
    Scope of operations research activities
Operations research plays an increasingly important role in both the public and private sectors. Operations research addresses a wide variety of issues in transportation, inventory planning, production planning, crew planning, communication network design and operation, computer operations, financial assets and risk management, revenue management, market clearing and many other topics that aim to improve business productivity. In the public domain it deals with such topics as energy policy, defense, health care, water resource planning, forestry management, design and operation of urban emergency systems and criminal justice.

    OPERATIONS RESEARCH
The Stony Brook Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics has a program of graduate training and research in Operations Research, offering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees as well as a 18-credit Advanced Certificate in Operations Research . In addition to faculty in Applied Mathematics, the Operations Research program also draws upon faculty in Computer Science, Economics, and the College of Business. Research interests of operations research faculty cover a range of problems in discrete and stochastic optimization: smart energy grids, forecasting electric demand, efficient manufacturing, routing aircraft around storm systems, robotics, geographical information systems, recursive learning automata, and efficient design of clinical trials. For more information about Operations Research research, see Operations Research projects The standard professional degree for operations researchers working in business and industry is the M.S. degree. The department offers a 30-credit M.S. degree, with no thesis, that follows the guidelines for professional training of the operations research society INFORMS. The department also offers a Ph.D. degree which starts off with the same courses as the M.S. degree. For more details about requirements for the Ph.D., please see Ph.D. Requirements

FACT-BASED PURPOSE-ORIENTED CONSEQUENCE-CONSCIOUS LEADERSHIP™ Home Operations Research About Us Contact Us WHY APPLIED OPERATIONS RESEARCH? Research is often associated with test tubes; Bunsen burners, white lab-coats and Einstein-like characters writing complex formulas that can often intimidate or scare individuals. But put in a simple way, Operations Research is the thorough process of studying and analysing factors surrounding a defined business problem in order to solve it. we recommend the BETTER of 2 worlds: scientific methodology and your experience. According to MBTI™ around 50% of the world’s population makes their decisions on numbers. The other half – scientifically seen – guess. They do not do so of conscious intend, but rather through belief as other methods are unknown to them or they feel uncomfortable with the methodology. The REAL QUESTION is how long your business can afford it?

Jay Adamsson Consulting
Managing business or government is the art of using resources to produce outputs. Sometimes those resources are raw materials, machinery, physical space, human resources, or all of the above. As anyone charged with managing the use of resources knows, decisions can easily become quite complex. Analytics/Operational Research is the science of improving business operations by improving decisions. It helps decision makers find the best solution given complex problems. The result is more efficient, better run, and more profitable organizations.
How the Science of Decisions Improves Business
Decisions are the lifeblood of a healthy, vibrant operation. The world constantly changes, and business or government operations have to change with it, or they risk becoming stagnant and irrelevant. Smart decisions by managers are required to keep up. The easiest approach to decision making is often to rely on instinct. Most decisions are carried out this way, and in most cases it is the best approach. For decisions that have to be made immediately, or for those for which there is a lack of relevant data, this simple approach allows someone to bring their experience and intuition to bear when it is needed. However, there is danger in relying too much on intuition. Sometimes, there is a better choice than the seemingly obvious, intuitive decision. Without a process designed to produce better decisions, improvements can often be overlooked.

Program Overview The Operations Research (OR) Program at the University of Delaware is designed to provide the student with a strong foundation in the theories and methods of economics, engineering, mathematics and statistics in order to analyze problems from a systems approach. Valid applications (case studies) bridge the gap between pure theory and methods. The rigorous core courses provide the student with methodological tools in recognizing, analyzing and solving problems. The program strives to educate well-rounded individuals who are able to compete in the market places of academia as well as public institutions and private enterprises. Since 1996, the emphasis of the OR program has been towards the finance industry. Programs of study are tailored to student and faculty interests and emphasize research. Course work includes a core in operations research, optimization, statistics, and applied probability, in addition to supporting courses related to areas of application. Cornell Operations Research is dedicated to advancing the field of Operations Research through our talented students, scientific discovery, collaborative work with business and industry, and academic outreach. Operations Research (OR) emphasizes optimizing organizational and system performance using advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. There is a close connection between Operations Research (OR) and commercial software. A wide array of software products, from Excel Solver to high performance parallel processing simulation tools, are based on OR-developed abstract ideas and concrete algorithms (several of these packages, notably CPLEX and AMPL for optimization, were developed by Cornell alumni). Such software products are used to solve OR models that are routinely used in manufacturing, distribution, marketing and other business functions.
