Decision Analysis – Decision Trees

Operations research (OR) is a scientific approach to analyzing problems and making decisions. OR professionals aim to provide rational bases for decision making by seeking to understand and structure complex situations and to use this understanding to predict system behavior and improve system performance. Much of this work is done using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and manipulate mathematical and computer models of organizational systems composed of people, machines, and procedures. In the 1950s operations research evolved into a profession with the formation of national societies, establishment of journals and academic departments in universities. The use of operations research expanded beyond the military to include both private companies and other governmental organizations. The petrochemical industry was one of the first to broadly embrace operations research to improve the performance of plants, develop natural resources and plan strategy. Today, operations research plays important roles in a variety of industries such as:
  • airline - scheduling planes and crews, pricing tickets, taking reservations, and planning the size of the fleet

    Operations Research and Quantative Finance
The Operations Research area has two themes of primary focus: computational geometry, and stochastic optimization. The computational geometry group consists of Esther Arkin and Joe Mitchell along with adjunct faculty Michael Bender, Jie Gao, and Steve Skiena in Computer Science. The stochastic optimization group consists of Eugene Feinberg and Haipeng Hu, along with adjunct professor Hussein Badr in Computer Science. The Quantative Finance group consists of Robert FFrey, Andrew Mullhaupt, Ann Tucker and Haipeng Xing. Robert Frey and Andrew Mullhaupt, both half-time in the department, played leading roles in designing highly successful quantitative trading systems for hedge funds: Frey at Renaissance Technologies and Mullhaupt at Renaissance Technologies and SAC Capital. Ann Tucker formerly worked for several investment banks and hedge funds as a manager and quantitative trader. She serves as Executive Director of the Center of Quantitative Finance. Haiping Xing is a statistician who specializes in financial statistics. In a few months, the department expects to announce the appointment of the initial recipent of the Frey Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Quantitative Finance, who will be Director of the Center for Quantitative Finance.
    Computational Geometry
Esther Arkin's primary research area is the design and analysis of algorithms that arise in network optimization, computational geometry, graph theory, scheduling, robotics, geographic information systems, computer graphics, manufacturing, and computer vision. Arkin is interested in theoretical analysis of worst-case complexity of problems, especially those that require optimization. She collaborates extensively with Joe Mitchell. Welcome to STOR at UNC
The Department of Statistics and Operations Research specializes in inference, decision-making, and data analysis involving complex models and systems exhibiting both deterministic and random behavior. We focus on developing and analyzing the necessary quantitative and computational tools to enable practitioners to solve problems in statistical and probabilistic analysis, modeling, optimization, and the evaluation of system performance. Our faculty engage in fundamental research in probability, statistics, stochastic processes, and optimization, and are also heavily involved with interdisciplinary areas of application such as genomics, biological modeling, environmental statistics, insurance and financial mathematics, revenue, workforce, and supply-chain management, traffic flow and congestion, and telecommunications. Our graduate programs in Statistics and Operations Research provide challenging and comprehensive training across the full spectrum of statistics and operations research, including theoretical foundations, cutting-edge applications, and state-of-the-art computation. Graduates work in many diverse areas of industry and government, as well as serving on university faculties throughout the United States and abroad.

R references for handling Big data
The Dallas R User Group had a meeting over the weekend. One of the discussions is the memory limitations with R. This is a common subject among the R community and R User Groups. There has been a lot of strides recently in allowing R to stretch its memory limitations. I thought I would compile and share some of the best resources I have found to remedy the big data issue.

Taking R to the Limit: Parallelism and Big Data

Hitting the Big DataCeiling Limit in R

While this is not a helpful article for big data it does show some of the issues R current faces. Namely the issue of that lack of a "int64" or Long Long data type memory allocation.
Enterprise Software Revolution R Enterprise Revolution Analytics is creating enterprise software around R to tackle issues of big data, parallelism and threaded computing in order to speed up large data processing and analytics. Posted by Larry at 12:06 PM 4 comments Email This BlogThis!
