Appendix 2 - The Spearman Rank Correlation Test Chapter One - Ornithology as a Science Suppose we have come to a great marsh or swamp to spend a day watching water birds. after scanning the habitat and, perhaps, taking notes on the kinds and numbers of the birds present, we sit in the sun on an old log eating our sandwiches, and get to wondering why so many wading birds have white feathers. Great Egrets Snowy Egrets , and immature Little Blue Herons are all covered in white plumage. Someone ventures that perhaps white feathers help the birds catch fish because they reflect the blue of the sky down into the water, making the white bird match its background. Somebody else suggests that is white feathers have evolved only because they fool fish, then all white birds should feed on fish. We al begin to leaf through our field guides, calling out white-feathered species and what they eat. White-tailed Tropicbird, White Pelican , and Gannet all eat fish. Then we come to the

ORNITHOLOGY, 1 properly the methodical study and consequent knowledge of birds with all that relates to them; but the difficulty of assigning a limit to the commencement of such study and knowledge gives the word a very vague meaning, and practically procures its application to much that does not enter the domain of science. This elastic application renders it impossible in the following sketch of the history of ornithology to draw any sharp distinction between works that are emphatically ornithological and_those to which that title can only be attached by courtesy ; for, since birds have always attracted far greater attention than any other group of animals with which in number or in importance they can be compared, there has grown up concerning them a literature of corresponding magnitude and of the widest range, extending from the recondite and laborious investigations of the morphologist and anatomist to the casual observations of the sportsman or the schoolboy. Though birds make a not unimportant appearance in the earliest written records of the human race, the painter's

The class is three credit hours with an optional lab from 8-11 AM on Tuesday mornings. Lectures are Tues/Thurs Final exam Key 2010 View this year's syllabus. Lectures review the birds of the world, emphasizing birds of the southeastern U.S., their evolution, behavior, ecology, and conservation. Labs focus on bird identification and behavioral observations and often entail local field trips. One lab is spent on dissection. There is a full-day trip on a Saturday to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro and an optional weekend outing to Huntington Beach State Park in the last half of April. During this trip, which coincides with the northward migration of many songbirds, we usually see over 100 species of birds. Topics include how we identify birds and understand their evolutionary history, what special physical and behavioral adaptations birds have, how birds live and reproduce, and how birds respond to changes in their environment. Within these web pages, you can learn more about the Burke Ornithology Division, its bird collections, and its activities. The ornithological collections at the Burke Museum are relatively modern, with more than 85% of the collection built in the past 20 years. We maintain a comprehensive collection of birds from the Pacific Northwest, North America, and many other parts of the world. These bird specimens are used for teaching, research, and art. We are particularly known for our special collections such as spread wings (the largest such collection in the world) and bird tissues (probably the world's second largest collection).
Mission The Burke Museum's Ornithology Division contributes to the world's knowledge of birds by building and maintaining exceptionally well-curated collections of bird specimens for use in teaching, research, and art. We are committed to providing hands-on training for students in the natural sciences through specialized classes, collection-based research opportunities, and participation in local and international expeditions. We provide access to information from our bird collections to the wider community via on-site visits, bird specimen loans, exhibits, educational outreach, and a Web-searchable database.

Ornithology Event Links Forum Thread: Test Exchange: Ornithology is a science that concerns the study of birds. The competition includes both identification of birds and questions about bird characteristics (anatomy, diet, range, etc). There are 185 species on the Official Bird List for 2011, which are separated into 19 orders. Any of the species on the Official Bird List may be tested on during the competition. However, some states may use a modified bird list. Ornithology rotates with forestry entomology , and herpetology every 2 years for both B and C division. 2011 is its second and last year, so it will switch to forestry in 2012.

Studying Birds
What is ornithology?
Ornithology is the scientific study of birds. The information ornithologists gather is used to better understand how birds function, inside and out, and to learn how birds relate to their natural environment.
Why study birds?
  • Birds provide a terrific doorway into nature and scientific study. They are easy to see and study. They engage in fascinating behaviors and play important roles in the ecosystems that sustain life Birds are excellent indicators of environmental health. Their changing populations often provide clues to the overall health of their habitat. Go to our Conservation section for more information.
